I’ve been going since 86 and in all honesty, there are quite a few people who frequent Wigan boards who went nowhere near Springfield Park, or showed an interest in LATICS until the good times came along.
And before someone comes on and throws such accusations at me…. Look at my avatar. Thats me and Roberto in 1997,the day we won the old Third Division against Mansfield. Happy Days.
Never spoke to you before vat but can vouch for you being a springy lad. Crowds were that small you knew everybody’s face..
That night in 1997 around Wigan town centre was fantastic[/quote]Cheers mate.
I’m pretty sure I didn’t hit town after the game that day in 97. I’m getting flashbacks now and it was a very hot and humid day. Lancashire and Lowe scored? Remember one of the goals being a slide in finish. Went the supporters club after the game and the team came in, still in kits and with the trophy. I’d worked at the club for a bit earlier that season and had got to know some people. The late John Benson had his knockers, but he came across as a nice bloke to me. Always had a chat of a morning and asked about you. John Deehan was a bit aloof. Would disappear into his office with hardly a good morning.
I think in May 1997 I had my eye on a bit of skirt who lived up our street, I probably went after her lol

21 January 2018 at 3:49 pm #165281Was belting in O Neill’s that night then if I remember rightly we stopped the traffic with a rendition of ‘sit down for the champions’ outside the Raven. Prem promotion eclipsed it in Chicagos and on King Street but two memorable nights those. Roll on May!

Later in the night is a bit vague other than copping off with a lovely lady in some bar on King Street/Library Street, doing a Klinsmann on my neighbours front lawn when I got home (it rained later in the day) & seeing them baffled the next afternoon by the big skid mark on their lawn. Finally waking up upside down in our shed coz I’d lost my keys & couldn’t wake my mum up!!21 January 2018 at 4:50 pm #165283I’ve been going since 86 and in all honesty, there are quite a few people who frequent Wigan boards who went nowhere near Springfield Park, or showed an interest in LATICS until the good times came along.

Wasn’t the May 97 match against Mansfield a midweek evening kick off and the earlier promotion against Mansfield on a Saturday? Both fantastic occasions and the earlier one being our first football league promotion which made Elton Welsbys Kick Off Match.

No – we clinched promotion in 97 in a midweek game (v Chesterfield I think) but the Mansfield game clinched the title & was on a Saturday
21 January 2018 at 6:24 pm #165286I don’t understand the problem people have with new fans. At some point we were all new fans to some people and for the club to evolve and be successful we need the next generation of new fans each time. We should welcome them and listen to their opinions rather than think we are better than them or are a more valuable fan with more rights because we happened to have been going for 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years. I love seeing kids there and think it’s great when we get a big crowd in.
21 January 2018 at 6:36 pm #165287Started watching Latics from mid 60s though not on a regular basis, in 70 really got into us as a proper fan, it was the Gordon Milne team what did it, that team was something special couldn’t wait for each match, don’t think we missed a game, home and away for 3 seasons, then kids came along and had to chose between feeding us as a family or going games. Never had a season ticket till we went to JJB, have had one every season since. If that makes me a “lifelong fan” then so be it.

We were outside the Springy red hot day and pissed.
21 January 2018 at 10:11 pm #165291Carlisle away in the FA Cup back in 1934. That was a journey. The only way to get there back then was by train. We won 6-1 and I’ve never missed a match since.
21 January 2018 at 10:22 pm #165292We know Jason Taylor is, can’t remember seeing the other guy at SpringyAs he was at Uni until 1999, then he is a (little!) bit younger than Jay, and probably wasn’t even born when the Latics entered the league. Is that an acceptable excuse for not being at Frickley away in 1976?

Not if he supported someone else why he was at said Uni as that wouldn’t make him a lifelong fan would it?
21 January 2018 at 11:00 pm #165295Correct. I don’t know the guy – i’m just pointing out that he’s in his mid-30s and thus wouldn’t have moved in the same circles as many on this board, who seem to not accept anyone as a true fan unless they went in the non-league days.
Maybe they can look him up and have a chat with him at Southend or Bristol Rovers next month?
