I’m not professing to be Latics longest fan but I have been watching them since the Lancashire Combination in 1954 making this my 64th continuous season.
I think the strangest thing I can remember was my dad taking me to Darwen one Saturday to find the whole pitch covered in cow pats and the game being postponed Match of the day had to quickly relocate to Ewood Park.

There are some serious ‘new fan’ dislikers on Vital …… what does that say??

And there are some new fans who are on groups on Facebook etc who need taking down a peg or two. One lifelong fan, Derek Tinsley, a lot will know him from when he had the programme hut at Springfield, well he was getting stick and abuse the other day because he said he can no longer afford to go to games. Derek had been a real loyal fan since 1974,and his dad had been groundsman at Springfield Park.

Seeing him getting stick off people who have been going not that long, really cheesed me off, being honest. Not one person knew who he was… If they went at Springfield, they would have done.
Don’t fall for what Derek says. He posts on there to wind people up and get a rise.

He was saying he can’t afford to go to matches, but a few posts later was saying how he was at the Bournemouth away game.

I’d take what he posts on there with a pinch of salt.
He’s got relatives who live in Bourmemouth, thats how he came to go to it. He is a genuine long time Supporter, I can vouch for him.

Yes, I know who he is.

But he’s a wind-up merchant on Facebook.

I can’t say I either agreed, or disagreed with his sentiments about Colclough, the jury is out about if he is good enough for the Championship. I’d give him a go though and see. He’s shown I’m glimpses that he is a player, but now has the added challenge of Jamie Walker in contention for a place. He has to get in the team and stay in the team on merit. Simple as that.

Derek made that comment about getting shut of him, and unfortunately for him, Colclough then had a decent game in the cup replay, which then saw a load of young pups and gobby bellends laying into him online. Was no need for it. I’d quit by then though, as I can’t be bothered arguing with supposedly grown men who spend their time making up songs about our players. I’m 41 and beyond all that rubbish.

Best one I ever heard was a lad I used to go school with.

Him and his parents watched LATICS. They went to Wembley in 85, he had a fully signed programme as his dad knew Graham Barrow. I remember seeing said lad and his dad, outside Vicarage Road when we played them in FA Cup in 1991.

By the time we met up again and went college in 93/94, he was a cherry and white wearing, rugby league preaching Warriors fan. Totally not interested in LATICS, and doing his best to convert people to Rugby League.

We lost touch after college in 1996, and but in the early to mid 2000’s, I was told he had a season ticket sat in the Kop at Anfield. Lord knows who he supports now… Man City? Who knows.

How can you just swap like that? It seems that when we hit hard times in 92/93 he jumped ship. Weve had a few more like that in recent years.

I don’t get it if you actually go to games or live in the town. If you’re an armchair Liverpool fan from Cornwall then I’d imagine it’s easy.

I remember a few years ago, we were on holiday and because it had been rearranged for whatever reason, I missed a home game V United. Luckily, it was televised and was screened in the bar in our hotel. Majorca I think it was.
Anyway, I ended up seated next to this middle aged woman from Devon. She started on and on about Liverpool and how great they are and all that. She was like Cilla Black she was saying what a great club they are and what a great place it is. How she supported them and was a massive fan. I dug a bit in our conversation and it transpired that she had never even been to Liverpool, let alone Anfield. Her piece de la resistance was when she actually said, and I quote “its those nights like in Istanbul that make it all worth it”. I am trying my best to quit swearing but even now as I’m telling you this… F…me! Can you imagine how this wound me up? Glory hunters and clingers on I have no time for.

I had to get away, so I made my excuses and moved away from her. I went and sat next to a guy in his 50s who it turned out was from Luton… Who supported Luton, season ticket holder and was aghast at how his club were being forcibly relegated, at the time. I shook his hand and wished them all the best. He was all compliments for LATICS too.

Exactly the sort of ‘fan’ that is everything wrong with football.

I used to speak regularly in a work capacity to a gentleman from Plymouth who was a Liverpool fan and referred to them as “we” and “us” at every chance and used players nicknames like “Stevie” as though he knew the bloke.

Instead of “Gerrard had a good game” he would say “Stevie had a good game”.

Utter muppet.

There are some of us that rejected Liverpool at the height of their fame and came and supported Latics though :)
And Latics have given us far far far more enjoyment than staying with Liverpool ever could have. Add in a son and grandson who genuinely are lifelong Wigan fans.
Am I a sort of reverse glory hunter? :D

In all honesty, Ive nothing against Liverpool the club…theyre a fantastic club with lots of glorious history. They’ve had the same thing happen as United though in that a lot of the old local support has been replaced by tourists. Even LATICS, whilst in the top flight attracted our fair share of tourists to games. We had Serbians, Malaysians, Chinese, German, Austrian etc near us whilst in the top flight. I suppose it’s a sign of your club doing well and becoming known. Not a problem with that.

Just as long as the club remembers who the original fans are/were before the success came,

You made a bold move, George. But what a journey you have had. Non League? Then every division of the football league. Not many clubs fans have seen their team play in every division. And we have beaten every one of the big boys along the way, the cherry on the cake being the FA Cup.

Which to LATICS was like what winning the European Cup was in Rome 77 to Liverpool.

I’d say you made the right choice!

I am sure most of us of a certain age supported another club before we got in to the football league. I went to a few games in our first season then more in our second, and by 1980 was going regularly home and away, I was hooked, loved the atmosphere and sometimes the trouble that went with it (watching from a very safe distance). But before the football league days i was a city fan, oh the irony, would be interested to know which teams other latics fans supported, if any, pre football league.

Horc and I definitely didn’t. Just only ever been Latics for us. Same with Lostock. However I totally welcome any new fans, wherever they come from.
