Is it me, or are all Bobby’s signings flawed? He wastes no time carping on about his scouting network, but has he really made a quality signing? Yes McCarthy and Moses DO look promising, but are far from the finished article and didn’t come cheap.
We currently have strikers who can’t score, a midfielder with a reported heart problem, a coward for a keeper, a defender with a drink history, add these to a captain who don’t talk, a lefft footer on the right and he’s only short of a compass that don’t point north!

        Confirmed heart problem

He is diagnosed with Sudden Adult Death Syndrome – didnt and could never pass a medical, however I rate him quite highly

So to answer the thread – a decent signing in my opinion

I would say Diame is currently one of the best midfielders in the country. Its his first season in the Premier League and he looks absolute quality everytime he plays. How anyone can criticise him is beyond me. I thought we were excellent last night and up till the sending off dominated the game in the backyard of the wealthiest club in the world. Loads of positives to take into the games coming up as long as we bin that dodgy keeper!

Not fit enough, simple as. Playing with one striker we need plenty of goals from midfield, he just can’t get into the box fast enough. One of the best midfielders in the country?? I don’t think so.

                  £2m?

Why don’t we just keep it simple? and play N’zogbia on the left, Moses on the right with McCarthy and Diame or Thomas in the middle. Oh and play 2 strikers and give the opposition something to think about.

I think it was Bill Shankly who said “football is a simple game made complicated by idiots”.

How true that statement is or was I’m not sure.

You’ve already fannied around with this topic about a week ago.

McCarthy was £1.7m and Moses £2.5, and you consider this expensive?

We don’t buy ready-made Premier League stars because we can’t afford them, and/or they won’t play for Wigan.

                  #28061

I’d agree that we can’t say he’s made a quality signing in that there is no-one I would say has been a complete success:
Stojkovic – doesn’t look up to the job
Caldwell – No nonsense defender. no more & no less but as the Bolton game showed he needs to do it on a consistant basis
Gohouri – Hadn’t played for months & was clearly not going to be available for quite some time so don’t understand the signing
Thomas – Not impressed at all. He might tackle all day long but rarely finds his team mate with a pass
Diame – Probably the best of the bunch BUT has had as many poor & anonymous games as he has had good uns. Needs to improve his consistancy
McCarthy – Looks a good un but only been playing for 2 months. Not long enough (IMO) to say whether he’s been a success or not
Moses – Apparently one of the hottest prospects in the English game. It seems clear however that Bobby doesn’t think he’s ready yet so I’d have to question the wisdom of bringing in someone he didn’t think was ready into a team in the middle of a relegation battle whilst releasing other players & not bringing someone in alongside him. We’ve certainly not seen anywhere near enough of him to say whether he is good enough or not
Gomez – Looks like a Championship player
Scotland – Looks like a championship player
Moreno – starting to grow into his role but is 2 months enough to say he’s been a success especially as his arrival has coincided with latics only scoring in 3 of our last 8 league games (and only 1 goal in each of those)?
                  Amaya – Looks a league 1 player

To me its worrying for the close season that 9 months after his arrival there is not one of his sayings that I would say has been a quality signing. That’s not something I have been able to say with any of the Latics managers in the 23 years I’ve been watching

                  Not true.
Off the top of my head, in 5 premeir league seasons we have signed the following players who have been “ready made” for this division & didn’t need time to settle in:
Chimbonda, De Zeeuw, Camara, Heskey, Cattermole, Palacios, Scharner, Kirkland, N’Zogbia, Bramble, Boyce, Melchiot, Pollitt – am sure given the time or the inclination I could name many more (& no doubt others (Valencia, Rodallega etc..) who needed a bit of time to settle in & others (De Ridder, Kapo, Sibierski etc..) who weren’t good enough
Like I said though there’s not been one manager in my time of watchign who I could say 9 months into their reign that there is not one signing who I would consider a quality signing

                  Tyldesley

I’d agree wholeheartedly with all of the above, but would add that I think Moses was brought in when he was because he was cheap due to Crystal Palace’s situation. Twelve months down the line and I’m sure he would have costed a damn sight more.

Edit: The this refers to the post above the one above.

                    Standish,
you talk rubbish. How can you say players won’t come when we’ve attracted them in the past?

This post was aimed at the originator of the thread, not you – as he started a similar thread a week ago, claiming we should be attracting established Premier League players.

Without trying to be too pedantic – Chimbonda, Scharner, Boyce, Rodallega, Pollitt and Valencia had never played in the Premier League before signing. (the phrase I used was ‘ready-made Premier League players’)

N’Zogbia and Cattermole I grant were good signings, which surprised some people that Wigan had attracted them whilst the others on your list were has-beens and misfits, who admittedly were a success.

‘Not true’. Is this a fact or merely your opinion? Whelan has publicly stated that he will not pay over the odds for players, or pay them exorbitant salaries. Couple that with low attendances and the potential of a yearly battle against relegation, we are hardly likely to attract the league’s best talents.

I think you’ve mistaken this for a pro-Martinez post, when it is not.

Edit: Apologies, I think Boyce played a season in the Premier League for Palace.

                    Okay. You’re right, I’m wrong.

So you don’t think we are low on the pecking order when it comes to attracting players?
