Seems like these two who couldn’t make the first team last season are surplus to requirements and are off to Rangers.
How the frig are we meant to prepare a squad for a season when in the middle of preparations two potential first teamers are off-loaded to the dizzy heights of the Scottish First Division. Who knows they may even get a game there. More importantly that is two more that need to be replaced! This transfer window system needs to be scrapped or put back to the end of July.

I just saw this – surely it means 400k each which is still far too cheap in my opinion …. surely ??

DON COWIE reckons Rangers supporters will soon warm to Wigan pair James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn once Mark Warburton gets the polish out.

The duo are due to check in at Ibrox today after a fee of around £400,000 was agreed and they will join up with former Latics team-mate Rob Kiernan.

Gers fans might not be doing cartwheels at players coming from a club in England’s third tier but Wigan midfielder Cowie is convinced all three are gems who just need a change of scenery to shine.

The ex-Inverness, Watford and Cardiff star said: “I wouldn’t look at it as a
negative that they are leaving Wigan. It’s a case of us being relegated and our new manager, Gary Caldwell, wanting to put his own stamp on things.

“He also has to balance the books. We have a big squad and you can only carry a certain number. Getting some money in for those two lets him shuffle the pack a bit.

“But it’s no reflection of them as players. He would have liked to have kept them as they are talented young guys. But he also has to look at what he needs for this league so it is a good deal for all parties.

“It can only be good for the guys. It will get them playing again at Rangers and I can only see them doing well. They will be great signings.”

Tavernier is just 23 having come through at Leeds and Newcastle and spent much of his career on loan.

Waghorn, 25, was a hit at Leicester under Sven Goran Eriksson and was capped by England Under-21s but toiled as the Latics went down last term.

Cowie feels a fresh start will invigorate the pair at Rangers.

He said: “They both have good pedigree. Trav has been part of promotion-winning sides in the last two years. He helped Rotherham get up then did it again at Bristol City last year. He came through the ranks with Newcastle and is a very good young player.

“Waggy is the same. He was at
Sunderland and Leicester before joining Wigan. He’s a bit older but it was hard for everyone here last season. We were all gutted with relegation.

“He is a player who’ll reward you with goals if he gets a run of games. I’ve played against him and he is a real handful. He has great movement and
is dangerous in and around
the box.

“He broke into the Foxes team under Sven, who obviously rated him and it was no surprise Wigan came in for him then.

“Rangers have got big Rob as well so they will have a bit of company. He is a great signing. He’s a top player and the right age. I’ve got no doubt they are three quality signings.”

The problem we have Donny is that we didn’t expect to be in this league when we signed any of these players. In the PL we would put a relegation clause into contracts which meant wages were reduced should we go down. I doubt that was put in in the last two years.

That means we are now stuck with players who are on far too much for this division and we have to get shut as and when we can whether we want too or not.

I simply see it as, “New Era – Nothings changed”

Buy a player i.e Griggs, sell a player to part fund it or in this case sell 2.

Last season we didn’t use players who would have kept us up, now we’re getting rid of players who would have seen us go up.

            Premier League…Championship…Div One…..same shit….different day

Neither have done too much in their time at Wigan, but if wages were not an issue we would probably keep them as they both would certainley do okay in this league.

Hopefully the transfer money and the saving on wages will allow Caldwell to get in replacements of a decent standard.

Plenty haven’t done much in their time at Wigan, generally because they didn’t get played due to a succession of managers being inept.

2 back to back promotions and a player of the season for Tavernier and the goal scoring prowess of Waghorn are hardly likely to be seen as assets in the eyes of some at WAFC. Why would we want that when we could buy the likes of Perkins et al?

I’ve heard we’re putting in bids for the own goals scorers from Southport

There have been calamitous decisions in every depatment over the last two seasons.
We are now embarking on a new start with a new Chairman, Manager and team.
We have to get behind them all from the off and hopefully all the terrible decisions of the past can be forgotten and we can start again and have a bright new future.

Do you really believe that a succession of managers working day-in day-out have chosen not to pick players because they cannot see what you obviously can?

Yes I genuinely think he does.

Correct! Waghorn, in particular, was starting to become the new Roger Espinoza – nowhere near as good as poeple seemed to think he was. Or himself, by all accounts.

Waghorn has never looked spectacular. Couldn’t understand why we bought him after his loan period. Didn’t see that much of Tavs but he had had a good season with Rotherham in the third tier.

At least I can say I saw Aaron Taylor-Sinclair’s only appearance for us!

I think that makes Taylor, Cowie, Huws as the only ones left from the signings last summer.

Yes I do, backed up by the fact that none of these players played enough, none of those managers are here (sacked) and we are now in division one.

Mark my words those 2 will do well and Rangers will have nothing but good things to say about them. Oh and before anyone says Scottish football is cack and 3rd division standard, that’s what division we’re in and they would have made a big difference this year. We’ve made 1 good signing and made several bad sales.
