Wasn’t it kevin lynch who paul rogers once barged into him on purpose, but made it look an accident.

I was senior steward in the tunnel that night. We had to get between the two benches at one point when Jones and tone of their players got sent off. The thing was that I think he got most of the sending off decisions correct.
Holloway was calling for his team to try to get another sent off, but according to Lynch in his after dinner speeches he was determined that wouldn’t happen. So all sorts went on.
At the end I rushed on to the pitch, accompanied by a police women (unusual for police to be involved at all) and told Lynch that we’d wait for the tunnel to clear (rather than get him off quickly into the melee nto a narrow tunnel at SP). “Whatever you say” he replied – obviously shaken.
We got him off, and into his room, and I was told (by the late lamented Dave Johnson) to stand outside and let no-one in. The only one I did let in was the referee’s assessor who was there like a shot. Every 5 minutes for about half an hour though Holloway would come up and say “Oi’d just loik a word with the referee”. “I’m sorry, Mr Holloway, but I can’t let anyone in”, and to be fair to him he’d go away, to come back 5 minutes later with the same request.
One of my more exciting evenings :)

One of the best tales Kevin Lynch tells is of a game he was running the line on the far side where Sunderland as the away team were about to win promotion.
The crowd were massing on the touchline, and apparently the ref said to Lynchy “I’m going to blow soon, when I do run for it”.
A few moments later the referee blew and Lynchy legged it for the tunnel pursued by thousands of celebratory Mackems.
When he got back to the changing room the referee said “what did you do that for?”
“You told me to leg it when you blew the whistle”
“But I was only blowing for a free kick”
The only linesman to have led a pitch invasion.
    A great character.
I remember him once (again to Dave Johnson’s chagrin) “conducting” the St Andrews terrace in singing “The referee’s a wanker”

Kevin Lynch was a great character.
He’s still doing the cicuit of after dinner speeches etc, and published his autobiography a year or two back called ‘Lynch The Ref’. Its got to be worth a read.

It is. Compared to Jeff Winter and Uriah Rennie who were arrogant t***ers, Lynchy was great fun.

Kevin Lynch was a great character.
He was guest speaker when we went on a Corporate Hospitality day many years later, he was as funny as f**k.
We spoke to him after the meal and he did nowt but piss himself whilst recalling the events that night in 1997.

He used to be MC at the corporate hospitality back in the PL days. He was quite funny and used to run a game where the guests could win some prize or other, I forget what now, by naming the stadium of the PL club he’d randomly throw at you. Your answer had to be quick. You couldn’t stall or correct yourself. Quite a few had a go but nobody managed it the night I was there.

Desperately trying to get our local league match on Laithwaite Park called off on the day of the Man City FA cup-tie in 1971 so I could get to the game. There’d been a frost overnight and managed to get a local referee down to rule it unfit in time to make it to Maine Road.

I played for Wigan Boys’ Club at the time.
Anyone remember that place in Soho Street?

That all white kit at City I always loved us wearing white away. I hated Leeds but I bought the first shirt that had a collar on just coz it was white. There is summat about an all white kit better than anything else.

I wonder what happened to the long lost recording of that game?

Went on Supporters Club coach, in the pub and the Plymouth fans were telling us game might be off…rather than a bomb scare, wasn’t it some fire/smoke alarm that kept going off without reason?

How noisy we were at Oldham last season.
1.1 draw tics fans were outstanding. Depeche mode just can’t get enough ringing out and the away stand bouncing.

Sit down for the champions. Stand up for the champions. Shoes off for the champions.
