In the past members of CL including one in particular who looked down with distain at anyone that did not share his pro Martinez view of how we should play the game, in fact it was probably him who coined the phrase “the dark side” for anyone daring to say bottom four bob was anything less than perfect.

His views were echoed by many on this board including one or two who still post on it, back then and even now when there is any talk about Ste’ve Bruce, his time with us and any smalltalk of a possible return it was met with the same old cliches of long ball crap and how their neck used to ache watching the stuff on offer, with that background I will get to my point.

Where are all these posters now, we are seeing stuff at the moment from Cooks stable that makes him look like an apprentice of John Beck or Dave Bassett, the long ball crap is a disgrace and shocking to watch, it is driving fans away, he has frozen our best striker out of the club only to replace him with one who suits his hoof ball game, Saturday at Rotherham in particular must have seen an unpresidented demand on neck braces from Wigan Infirmary from fans, where are all the posts from the Martinez tippy tappy school of thought, and more so why are they not condemning this rubbish as should be.

      All fair comments.

I was talking about this last week, to someone who happened to mention that Denny Landzaat used to play for us. I said that technically, he was a really good player. The problem was, he was here when Bruce was here, and we tended to bypass the midfield by going long, hence it didnt work out for him, even though he was a Dutch international. But had he been here under Martinez, he would have been a great player for us in that style.

Our current set up is miles away from either Bruce or Martinez. I shudder now that I criticized players such as Jean Beausejour when he was here. Compared to the current crop, he was absolute class. We are a classic case of the relegated team that didnt bounce back up straight away. For a season or so, you keep hold of quite a few of your better players. But once that first season after relegation is over, players either jump ship for their careers, or have to be sold to get their wages off the payroll. The problem with us is, unbelievably, we fell further still, and have done a yo yo between the Championship and League One. Our squad has been wrung out like a sponge, and that’s left us with the players we have got now. We’ve just lost Grigg, and we all know Powell will go. Whatever League we are in next season, we won’t be left with any great monetary value in the squad, which is a huge concern in the long run. Nobody knows how these owners will pan out, but if they get bored and leave us with a value-less squad, it could be disastrous.

Regarding Cook, he did a great job last year and did what was asked of him. For me, he is out of his depth at Championship level. The current squad…I look at it and I am sure most of the players would not be here under a different manager. There’s a reason we are where we are in the league, we are simply not good enough at this level. I think we will have enough to stay up. But a decision has to be made in May regarding the manager. I think he will go, either by his own choice, or somebody elses. No idea who will take over. A new manager will also need to spend some money if they genuinely want us to make progress.

When you are not feeling particularly excited about upcoming home games, it shows how bad things are.

And that was our aim this season right from the very first minute of our very first game. Or, have people forgot this?

Sorry, run that one by me again.

I dont think we play total route one. We look to dictate play when and where we can, but when were under pressure we do resort to route one

I dont think we are a total big boot style of a side. Certainly against QPR we werent all big boot. Its just a situation of getting as many points on the board however we can.
The majority of the time Bobs game was dull and boring but in a way his situation was all about surviving just like this season.
We are a million miles from John Becks route one game which was equally as drab as Bobs style but it too got Beck results.

3 teams worse than us this season. That’s how we will get away with it.

Isn’t that how every team that avoids relegation “gets away with it”. If we’re not one of the bottom 3 teams we obviously are good enough to stay up.

To be honest LMB, I don’t see us as a long ball side? Granted, not been an away game since Preston but what I did see early part of the season away from home was inept play.
At home we certainly are not long ball, pretty ok to watch imo.

We can all look at some of the names we used to have in 2013 – 2015 and think they were good compared to current crop. But in reality they were not good enough at that level. Just what we have now is poorer quality which is down to the lack of revenue we generate.

I watched Norwich v Ipswich earlier and the result flattered Norwich.

Ipswich didnt look bad at all and they look a miles better team than Bolton. Theyll give us a tough game on 23 Feb.

jimmy I don’t get to any weekend away days any more due to working Saturday evenings but I subscribe to the Latics player channel and see games every week, there have been some really inept performances away this season but Saturday was a lesson in the john beck school of football it was truly awful and in my opinion everything I do not want to watch when I go to a match, it may have been compounded because Rotherham were the same.

That’s because we’re looking at gaining points and safety at home.

When we play away we play with a different mentality basically trying not to concede then long ball it upfield in hope.

Against Rotherham I’ve never seen so many players panic and hoof “Just get rid” in and around our box. Even the new Everton lad got in the act. I’m sure Everton didn’t teach him that.

Cooks style of football especially away, building an aging squad, all player assets gone, a youth system not utilised will drive some fans away.
If it’s all about survival and nothing else and Cook remains in charge then next season will be a barrel of laughs.
Gun ho and take a chance Latics has been replaced with belt and braces let’s not hey, boring as fook

The aim this season was all about survival anyway & to consolidate championship football next season.
