With watching Wigan and being a season ticket for over 17 years. Ifeel that i have some right to offer my opinion with regards to my club Wigan Athletic and all associated to it.

Saturday was a proud moment for me, as i took my 3 year old boy to his first football match – i also brought my dad along who has never been watching Wigan before. Sitting in the east stand with the sun blazing over the west stand i thought were in for a jolly good game of football.

5 mins into the game i realised i was sat with the two popular societies of Gomez haters and Watson bashers. I believe Gomez had a half decent game. Watson was poor. However thats not relevant with regards of what happened when Gomez got subbed and when Watson went across at the sub of Caldwell i think. No player deserves to be booed or cheered off the pitch like that. no player at all. It was just embarassing as a Wigan Fan to see one of our players treated that way.

a We have some of the best fans in the league; unfortunately we also have some of the biggest dickheads in the league too.

one guy was bellowing to Gomez literally 10mins in “He doesnt deserve to be on this pitch” what a proper bellend i thought. so i asked him who whould you put on in his place. his reply was Di Santo.

I’m a firm believer that anyone who routinely slags off Gomez knows nothing about football. Not because Gomez is a brilliant footballer – not for one minute do I think he is – but because he is an easy target and bandwagon that those who can’t think up their own opinion can easily jump upon knowing that there will be a large number of equally uninformed people who will not disagree with them.

      Completely agree with that Griff.

I think football is rife with Pundits, Journalists and Fans who seem to say things because they heard them elsewhere or just for the sake of being heard.

One thing that makes my blood boil is reading some pap article on Newsnow and it being factually wrong!

Manchester Evening News had our highest rated player for the Fulham game as Watson with a 7!!! What game were they watching?

I think its a case of Little Wigan nobody cares when it comes to journalism but our own “fans” have no excuse.

I divide our fans into 2 categories.

Category A : Well reasoned fans who want the team to do well but are more than aware of where we come from and even just surving each season by the skin of our teeth should be something to be thankful for!

Category B : Unreasonable fans who think we by right should be competing with teams that make more selling shirts than we have in gross income and have probably only been supporting Wigan post premiership promotion.

I know which category will still be there if we start plummeting down the leagues.

But in terms of any other midfielder this season he has been no worse than any of them. I would put him in the middle with McArthur but encourage him to go forward. If he could combine attacking with quick passing he would be leathal. Always in the wrong position for me. There is no player i can ever think of (bar Solskjaer) who has ever made a career of being a bench warmer. That doesn’t include keepers. He could do with a run of games. He is dangerous on set pieces alone and has proved he is worth about 9-12 points on his own. If only he could merge it with open play.

For what it’s worth, my own personal opinion of Gomez is that if everybody else played at his speed then he’d be a world beater. As it is, he is too slow in thought & body to succeed in this league.
I also don’t think in a million years that he’s capable of playing the central midfield role where this slowness would get exploited even more than it does when he plays in the attacking midfielder/deep lying forward role.
I think he’s a good player to have in a squad & can fill in well for the odd game but when he becomes a regular starter it takes something away from Latics performances coz I think the system works best when there’s 2 nippy blokes a la Maloney & Moses to stretch defences. As it is when Gomez gets the ball it seems to slow play down.
That said, I don’t think he deserves the stick he gets from some quarters – I put it down to the McCulloch/Neil Roberts effect. The majority of the Latics faithful will warm to a limited skill, 100%er & grafter type player than they will to the likes of Gomez & Gary Teale who (no matter what they do/did) were perceived as “bottlers” & “afraid to get stuck in”

some of our so called fans who only watch at home or in the pub or on pc have no ides he had avery good game imo and seems others think so to.

Jordi Gomez has been voted the Vital Wigan man of the match for his performance in the 2-1 home defeat to Fulham on Saturday, even though the Latics attacking midfield man only played the first hour

Gomez rattled the bar with a rasping shot on the half volley from 18 yards, he played intelligently all the time he was on the pitch and it was the feeling of the fans at the game that he was very unfortunate to make way for Mauro Boselli when he was substituted

For the record the voting was:

        Jordi Gomez – 50%
        James McCarthy – 14%
        Arouna Kone 14%

I’d agree with most of this Tyldesley – apart from the bit about him not being good enough to make it at this level.

He does take the odd touch or two too many, but I personally think he could be a decent player but in a better team where the players around him offer more options and create more space for him.

He’s a luxury player that we can’t really afford, and I’d agree that he’s better coming off the bench rather than regularly starting.

Agree totally. I am sure that he could hold his own at most La Liga clubs, due to the slower pace and style. Bit too hectic over here perhaps.

A very skilful, gifted player. What would these people prefer? A ‘John Robertson’ type? I mean the centre-half we had from early nineties, rather than the ex Forest player! (He was a good un too!)

Gomez is a better player than me. And better than all the posters on this board. 5 years ago, he would have been the stand out player. Same with Teale, but a few years before that. As the club progresses in stature and pushes on in respect of getting better players as they move in the right direction, the longer serving players become the targets as their ability often goes from the best at the club to the worst at the club in a period of 3 or so seasons.

There are worse out there than him. And there are better. But he plays for us and we should give him our support if he is on the pitch. He doesnt pick himself.
