I saw Fyvie play a few weeks ago for the reserves (sorry, Development Squad).
Have to say there was nothing special. Nothing wrong – I just wouldn’t be leaping up and down insisting he has a first team place.
So RM fcuked up buying him then ? If Watson was not used hardly if at all in the great escape of last season then I am baffled as to why he is used now, especially with the evidence thus far that he is way below the standard of the Prem !
Phil, you have a rather simplistic view about how football works.
Fyvie is nought but a kid, bought cheaply for the future, no matter what RM might say publicly to butter him up. It’s how we have to operate in our situation. I’m not sure how you can f*** up when you’re only spending half a million quid.
Watson didn’t get in the team at the end of last season because the first XI was busy beating all and sundry and not getting injured. Plenty others didn’t get in it either, ie Diame, Rodallega, Stam.
I presume that the ony reason Watson played on Saturday was because McArthur wasn’t fit (I hope so anyway) and Watson was the best available to slot in to that position.
Miyachi and McMananam are arguably better players than Watson – but not as sitting, holding midfielders.
I hope filly finally gets the point ffs
Yes I do get the point….Watson is not good enough, simple as ! Cant take corners, cant take free kicks and has a very negative effect on the midfield as a whole by constantly slowing down, sometimes even halting passages of play. He can find the odd good ball but surely that is down to the law of averages. As for having a simplistic view on the game Griff, yes I guess I do but who wants to get bogged down with the real workings of a club. Why not as many terrace fans do not just say what you see and from what I have seen of watson, well ….!! We did ok against West Ham the other night without Watson did we not !! Whatever I say certain people on the wind up will beg to differ but if we did a poll on Watson I think the majority would be with me !
I don’t think anyone is disputing your analysis of Watson in his present playing situation but the point being that until macarther is back in midfield there is no one else to play in that position ,Fyfe is not ready yet and I cant think of any other alternative

No-one – apart from RM and probably (possibly) Ben’s mum – disagrees with you that he isn’t quite up to scratch. However, everyone else, to a man, accepts that he is probably the bext option we had to replace McArthur without changing the whole shape and style of play.
That just requires a basic grasp of football tactics and team selection, nothing whatsoever to do with the running of the club.
Your football opinion is that Fyvie should have played instead. Without anyone actually saying that Watson is a world-beater or Fyvie a complete no-mark, no-one, including Martinez, seems to share your opinion. Doesn’t that tell you something?

That’s elementary……
27 September 2012 at 4:21 pm #93952However, everyone else, to a man, accepts that he is probably the bext option we had to replace McArthur without changing the whole shape and style of play.personally, in McArthur’s absence, I’d much rather see David Jones given that role.
Whether that’s an indication of how badly I rate Watson over the last season & 5 games or whether it’s because I actually rate Jones I don’t know27 September 2012 at 4:31 pm #93954I do think Jones has deserved a crack at being involved in the middle for a while. Not based by any means on his improvements as a player but on the fact Watson has time and time again been asked to perform the role in which he is obviously either no good at or does not want.
Watson has his uses, but that square peg doesnt fit in Martinez’s round hole (aye up!!). the midfield man bringing the ball forward and linking up the front men isnt Martinez. So Watson for me is doing a role that he isnt comfortable with .
Now Mcarthur is fit though, maybe this debate can be put to bed for a while.
27 September 2012 at 5:34 pm #93960To be fair, there’s a world of difference between being a good player in the championship & being a good player in the premier league as we’ve seen ourselves. Latics had players who were great at that level De Vos, Breckin, Eaden (I know not everyone will agree with me on that last one but I always rated him) but who you could tell would struggle in the top flight – Jewell thought that & jettisoned them.
I never saw Gomez play at that level but I did read some reviews of him that made me wary of whether he’d be a success for us.
Good players can adapt & Gomez has some flaws in his game that means he can’t
You quite rightly point out that since starting he’s hardly featured & that’s coz he’s not good enough to command a regular starting place at this level & other managers know that. If he went to say United in this league he’d still get closed down just as quick & have to deal with the pace of the game just like he does at Latics
You say he’d do well in the Spanish league. Last time I looked Espanyol were in the Spanish league & they didn’t want him ;)We won’t agree on this Tyldesley, and I can’t be bothered with forum tennis, so just a couple of things:
‘If he went to say United in this league he’d still get closed down just as quick & have to deal with the pace of the game just like he does at Latics’
You say you’ve played football, so you’ll know how much easier it is to play with better players. Better players drag opponents away, make themselves available, spot a pass etc. So, yes the game is just as quick, but you are not closed down as quickly if you’re in a better team as your opponents are more wary of your teammates, and you do not have to dwell on the ball as long as there is always a man available or someone making a run and wanting a ball played through to them.
For instance, put Paul Scholes in Wigan’s team and he’d look a good player, but put him in United’s team and he looks world class.
‘You say he’d do well in the Spanish league. Last time I looked Espanyol were in the Spanish league & they didn’t want him’
Much in the same way that Villareal didn’t want Valencia, and Barcelona didn’t want Fabregas….
28 September 2012 at 2:35 am #93991Well the next time that Mcarthur is injured it may be an idea to try something else because the Watson thing clearly does not work ! It wouldn’t really have been such a baptism of fire for Fyvie against Fulham in my opinion but that has been and gone now. Even Jones could do a job in the middle if need be. Caldwell played in that position against Australia in a friendly and did a good job and so that is another option ! How much longer RM persists playing Watson in a role he isn’t very good at when called upon is anybodies guess but there are other options !
