There are worse out there than him. And there are better. But he plays for us and we should give him our support if he is on the pitch. He doesnt pick himself.

    He doesnt pick himself

Exactly. The manager obviously thinks he does a job for him or he certainly wouldn’t keep picking him.

I think this thread has descended into a who dislikes Gomez and who will stick up for another Wigan Athletic scapegoat debate. Pretty similar to what Area51 experienced at the game.

His original point was that it is a disgrace to treat our players in the way he saw/heard on Saturday and I firmly agree with him.

I also took my lad (2yo & 3 months) to his first game on Saturday, luckily he wanted to go the park just before half time so I didn’t have to hear the un-sufferables speal their unwanted noises towards our own players.

I think a few of us need to stand up and be counted in future when this happens.

p.s. Bob, never let Ben Watson play in the premier league again for us :)

If a player isn’t pulling their weight then the fans have every right to get on their backs. Jordi has rarely pulled his for a few years and thus has grown an army of critics who are slightly harsh at times.

He’s a good player but he’s incredibly frustrating to watch.

Yes, but Wiganers only seem to like those who run about like headless chickens, regardless of whether they’re any good or not.

We have a game that is based on keeping possession whether the kick and rush, harem-scarem merchants like it or not. Jordi gets in the team because he can do that well. Yes, he loses the ball sometimes when he is going forward due to his lack of pace and inability to always run think and pass at the same time but that’s exactly why he plays for us on about £25k a week and isn’t with one of the big boys.

He does take the odd touch or two too many, but I personally think he could be a decent player but in a better team where the players around him offer more options and create more space for him.

Surprise, surprise, I disagree with that bit!!
If he was capable of playing for a “better” side then he would be doing. He’s not a spring chicken & he’s not exactly unknown if managers of better sides thought he was capable of doing what you say then they’d have signed him in my opinion
I do think he’s a useful squad player for Latics to have & I do think he gets unwarranted stick off some but that’s about it

You can have your opinion but most of our opinions on Gomez is based in reality having watch him weekly unlike your nonsense which is seems to be based on… what is it based on??

            Dont forget your homework :)

Thanks for proving my point. Cheers :)

No offence Tylders but I would recommend your opinion on Gomez is taken with a pinch of salt as you would have considered him a winger until late last season ;)

The managers prerogative doesn’t necessarily mean that a player is of a certain standard, it is merely just an opinion ! Gomez has put in a couple of decent shifts so far this season but IMO he is no World beater ! Watson on the other hand gives me cause for concern and it beggars belief that he gets on the team sheet let alone the starting 11 !!

I don’t think anyone is claiming that Jordi is a world-beater, far from it. Just that he is not as bad as most people make out.

As for Watson, Roberto (deliberately) turned him from the energetic (goal-scoring!) box-to-box midfielder that we bought into a holding type of midfield player because he believed that he would be better suited to playing with all the play in front of him because of his vision and range of passing (his words, not mine) in what people have trendily started to call the quarter-back role. He also said that he thought that he would play for England one day. :S

It’s fair to say Watson has gone backwards somewhat since those days early last season, or maybe even the season before – I can’t quite remember when it was

Well that was indeed a surprise!

Yes there is an argument that if a player is good enough to play for a ‘better’ team then he would have been spotted by now, however, it’s rarely so black and white.

Gomez got into the Championship Team of The Season prior to signing for us and was tipped to be a star. Since then, he hardly featured and no half decent club is going to take notice or have a punt on a Wigan Athletic bit-part player.

In my opinion, he’d do well in a Spanish or Italian side, or an English team that play a similar system but with a better squad than what we have.

I believe That Gomez could be a major player for us if given a chance. By that i mean by the fans too. He has been a decent player for us under difficult circumstances. With our heads up, and flowing football (end of last season) he is the kind of player i feel but benefit. He is not a bad player.

I d challenge any footballer to maintain a level of consistency when their home crowd boo’s every time they play. its impossible to do.

refering back to comments by the Egg “If a player isn’t pulling their weight then the fans have every right to get on their backs” – yes i agree. but i see a difference between getting on at them and booing them or cheering them off the pitch. The premeditated attacks Gomez and Watson were getting only 5mins into the game were just simply ridiculous. (which is what i think i was going on about when i started the thread)

Everyone has their own scapegoat. They seem to be the favourable two.

Drop Watson to the reserves and play either Miyaichi or Fyvie who are both far better players than Ben Watson. You will no doubt find fault with my reply which will not surprise me in the slightest !
