2000 against Gillingham
i have mixed feelings about the 2000 play off final which i missed because it was my daughter’s 4th birthday & party (at our house) that day
in fact i seem to recall that Mr Griff* used my season ticket to get a ticket for the game – that arguably being his ‘road to damascus’ moment
*him turning up very drunk at the party later on [post-wembley] at about 10pm was quite entertaining in its own sort of way
(duplicate removed)
The old mailing list, them were the days !

just as well that it was before the days of profile pictures George
– certainly shades this week’s trick or treaters!was that Wembley April 1999 or May 2000?
Is that right Griff you were a Man Utd and Rugby man?think you need to put the record straight with that accusation
to be fair, he doesn’t seem to be the only one who is a relatively recent convert
good bet that most of the posters on here weren’t too prolific on the Springfield Scene message board back in the 1990’s nor members of the old email ‘mailing list’we need all the supporters that we can get (including those of this ilk) regardless of their previous allegiances or misgivings – a converted supporter is a still supporter regardless of when or why the ‘cleansing’ process took place
if you start hounding out all those who weren’t already firmly on the Latics (band)wagon by the turn of the millennium then you may find this board a lonely place to be
first reaction was that this was a stupid idea;
however, on reflection I think that never having to play the top 20 teams (whoever they are), other than in cup games, would be ok for us (and many others);
being in the Premiership is a bit of a bitter sweet thing – a great novelty at first but a bit meaningless with nothing to play for other than avoiding relegation after a while;
in the absence of playing the ‘big boys’ then we may again have a realistic chance of being competitive
in this sense staying in the championship would be ok by me if by some fluke we achieve a promotion place next season having been relegated this season – maybe we could be the first team ever to ‘turn down’ promotion to the EPL?in any case, why should dave whelan give (any more of) his hard earned money to wigan athletic?
most of the town don’t give a stuff and a good proportion of our ‘supporters’ don’t even go to games (any more)
whelan insists that we have to balance the books and i for one don’t blame him
people wont watch a struggling team
i am a prime example
watched them since early 70’s but have not been since we sold heskey and palacios
final straw for me was catts fiasco ,even though the player wanted to leave
nobody was more eager than me and my father my sons and quite alot of my friends
who i fear we will never return,so ill stick to the pubsyou have watched since early 70’s but won’t watch a struggling team or watch when we sell our best players?
on this basis why did you not stop going
a) any time pre-whelan when we struggled almost constantly? or
b) when we sold the likes of mike newell, david lowe, ray woods, peter atherton, joe hinnigan, to make up for poor income/gate revenue all pre-whelan?We could have a naked Kylie selling the shirts …You should be so lucky
He was always a “confidence player”. Some games he could run at defences and torment them, in others if they had the measure of him he was anonymous.It would be fair to say that Julian Dicks very much had the measure of him in the Canvey Island game.
I boycotted a lot of games last season but did get to the last five games of the season gone, because I saw that results were improving.What a difference the games were like compared to the dross in the first half of the season.
Anyway, long story short I have ended my boycott and have decided to get a season ticket this time. Is there anyone else who is coming back?
welcome home, the more the merrier (ignore the jibes from the super fans)
3 games on a row in which we have a realistic chance of taking points, not sure what more we could have asked for really
Good fixtures for me, Martinez hopefully has learnt from last season against Blackpool first game !correct, this is the whole essence of next season …
we need to be determined to get points in addition to playing nicely – just as we did in the back end of last season
lessons learnt, time to move on to ‘the next level’ – now or neverMuy bien.Are you there tomorrow? I have a Spanish related long shot proposition for you.
who?where?
if you mean me (rather than Standish) – I am pretty much housebound at the moment though I can now reach a pretty mean pace down the driveway with my crutches so may venture out at some point;
just finishing ‘working from home’ for the day and logging off so textRandy Lerner never stood a chance
