play each game as 70 minutes ball in play, stop the clock every time the balls goes out or the game is stopped, instantly cut out all of the time wasting/pretend I am injured shenanigans

If Graham Barrow plays his cards right he can be in a win / win situation. Given that you are already writing him off, if he plays an out and out attacking style the fans will support him for having a proper go; and who knows, we might win enough games to escape the drop. In my book, he might as well; nobody will criticise true endeavour, because the damage is already done. I say give him a chance, because he’s the only realistic chance that we have got !

You should somehow get all 9,000 fans to agree unreservedly to this up front because I suspect that if we play with an out and out attacking style but still get beat 4-2 in each of the 9 remaining games then he will get absolutely crucified!!

… Instead we have persevered with this wing back one up top bullshit when we don’t have players skill full enough to play the roles.
Drop this wing back dross and put the lads back in their comfort zone and defend as a four.

Last night we played with a back 4, we didn’t have any wing backs.

Newcastle have better players than us but on the whole ours ran their socks off and competed. Benitez made (expensive) changes in the 2nd half because we were on top and we were fairly unlucky not to get back onto level terms.
I quite enjoyed last night’s game and came away thinking that at least we had a go. If Grigg’s 2nd half header had gone in we could well have had at least a point.

I also like 4-4-2 but didn’t have an issue with us winning the league last season playing with wing backs and one up front.

In case you’d forgotten, the folk of Wigan have a track record of not turning up for semi-finals, even when they are a novelty:

statistical difference – approximately 10 times as many Wigan supporters went to Wembley that day (for that semi final) than went to Doncaster last night (for that semi final)

It has certainly not been a good week to be a Latics fan.

Personally I haven’t felt that at all.
More or less 100% of people I have spoken to from quite a mix of locality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc., have seen the whole thing as a stir (not even in a storm) in a tea cup.
One thing it has done is to get us all talking about racism, sexism, and homophobia, including the sensitive issue of where the line is drawn between what is acceptable (banter?) and what is not.
Yesterday the middlesborough fans sang ‘you’re just a town full of racists’ but that itself was only half hearted and nothing but ‘banter’.
Ashamed to be a Latics fan? not even close

in reply to: Roger Espinoza: A retraction #136112
In recent months I have described Espinoza as an average player, at best.

I now wish to retract that statement and downgrade him to absolutely fucking woeful.

If simply running around a field very energetically for 90 minutes without doing anything meaningful with, or without, a football is what we are looking for, I have two cats here that could fill that role far more cheaply than he does.

as we say, two words … preston north end

correct or not, “FA Cup Champions” just works best in the song

    moan, moan, moan

maybe there should be a vote before every game so that the fans can pick the team and the formation

then we could all blame each other whenever we don’t win by at least 4

or, here’s a thought, maybe we could employ someone to do that job and let them get on with it

Enough of your bitching and sniping im struggling to see how a player who is yet to start a game this season and has only played for 120 minutes from the bench can hit the ground running? Surely as we approach the business end of the season we need someone who wont need two months to regain a modicum of match fitness. Cardiff fans seem to suggest he is overweight and unfit at present. Surely weve had enough of players in those categories!

if Rosler has faith/hope in Maynard then I too am happy to give him the benefit of the doubt
    in Uwe we trust

    in reply to: Dicko #125862
Im finding it hard to understand that we are letting a striker go when we are light up front. Is Uwe close to signing someone?

    ditto
    BUT in Uwe we trust

in reply to: this time last year… #125662
I’ve just watched the last 15 minutes of the DVD, and for the last couple of minutes after the goal I’m still yelling “Keep them out! Hold on!” at the telly.

It is still very very difficult to believe it really happened. :)

I just re-watched the goal spree against Everton (“an incredible FA Cup purple patch”) – one of the best 3 minutes of my life ;-)

in reply to: Were you one of the 983? #123564
I went to Reading for a Tuesday night game some 30 years ago and there was only me and S.Gall there from Wigan.

me & my cousin were once the only Wiganers at any away game at Crewe, in fact we were pretty much the only supporters from either team – everybody else had heard the news that the match had been cancelled :(

In Oct 1993 at Old Springfied we lost 1-3 to Bury.
There were 983 of us there.
Were you one of these hardy souls?
Who would have thought then we would be so close to the Knockout stages in Europe today.

If memory serves me right, wigan went 1-0 up with a goal from a penalty with the offending bury player getting sent off in the process.
We then managed to concede 3 despite playing against 10 men.
My recollection is that the attendance was announced at the same time as bury’s 3rd goal scorer, but that may not be completely accurate.
What is definitely true is that it was one of our very lowest ebbs and yet it remains one of my fondest memories.

Saturday’s win over Huddersfield has lifted us into the top 10 in the league and … we have a big opportunity to close the gap between ourselves and the playoffs which currently stands at just 4 points (we also have a game in hand) which is a better position than some of our performances deserve.

Sorry – I appreciate that you have written this article in your own good time but I must say that I find your lazy-journo type negativity to be inaccurate and unhelpful.
If you are expecting us to play Barcelona-like these days and/or that we have some divine right to win every game and be at the top of the division then I’m afraid you are barking up the wrong tree in the wrong field.

in reply to: Feeling Despondent ? #122598

I was initially down in the dumps with losing so many of our players but I was prepared to sit back this season, enjoy the football, not feeling stressed! and, after the inital purchase of new players, was feeling quite optimistic…..if we didnt make the premiership this season, ok, next will be fine.
However, i don’t feel confident at all, we are slipping down the ranks.
I am going to be patient, and i’ll never stop supporting Latics, but can’t help feeling despondent :(

    out of 6 home games (including Maribor) we have won 4 and drawn 2, scoring at least 2 on each occasion;
    in the league we have more points than games played and a positive goal difference;
I also enjoyed the times when we played ‘better’ football in previous years (including under Martinez) but you need to be able to pick out the positives or despondency is inevitable
if winning every game is what you are looking for then you are at the wrong club in the wrong sport
