This weekend sees the end of the regular season, and by Monday evening we will know which 24 teams will be in the Championship.
From a selfish point of view, which of the 4 clubs would we be happier facing next season – Villa or Derby, Charlton or Sunderland?
For me, I’d rather have Villa & Sunderland. Not only will both fill the North Stand and give us some cash, but we have a decent record against them.
Well, I for one am disappointed that there will be less games next season with a cracking atmosphere. Villa’s away support are always noisy and plentiful. Sunderland are the only club that have managed to pack out the East Stand, and cannot be classed as “Glory Hunters”. Packed away ends tend to make for a better atmosphere at the DW which can be pretty soulless when the visitors are dotted around the North Stand.
We’ve traded Bolton, Ipswich & Rotherham for Luton, Barnsley & Charlton. We’ve lost Norwich, Sheff Utd and Villa, to be replaced by Fulham, Huddersfield & Cardiff. I don’t see any of those six home fixtures as ones where there’ll be a great atmosphere, whereas at least 4 of the 6 we’ve lost were great days.
Positive is that for non season ticket holders there won’t be a ridiculous price to watch the Latics.
Twenty is plenty.Reconnected with fans? Your attendance against Portsmouth in the play off semis suggests interest is booming! That was when when you have to pay for tickets. A bit like cup games. ST holders not included in official gates.
I suspect it went the same way Boltons went. Paying off the massive debts they got in trying to establish themselves in the Prem which they never ever did.
Seriously egg if you haven’t seen it watch it. We had some on here lambasting Mr Whelan for keeping the famed “War Chest” in check well he was a real big spender compared to the owner at Sunderland. Yes they got good players in on loan and paid Rodwell a ridiculous wage not to play but it backfired spectacularly on them. There is no way that club should have been relegated again from the championship. Chris Coleman never saw or spoke to the owner in his time in charge which seems ludicrous. I feel for the Sunderland fans at a small club like ours yes getting relegated twice is possible and understandable at times but when you have the revenue they can create along with the parachute payments they should never have been so bad. Thank god we had an owner who was hands on and gave us many memorable moments in his tenure. I didn’t think I could ever appreciate Mr Whelan more than I did but after watching what Ellis Short has done to Sunderland I truly do.
The latest podcast, a 2 hour chat with the owners, was very revealing. They reflected on what had happened over the past 12 months, and how far they have come from turning a club with almost £200m of debts and 100m of assets into a debt-free club who will start to turn a surplus in a year. They described it as a “basket case” operation, where the owner wrote cheques from his Miami home whenever the Chief Exec asked him to. That was, until the day of relegation from the premier league, when Mr Short told the CE that he could whistle for any more funding. That put the club in a tailspin, as all of a sudden, they had to run it like a business rather than as if they were playing football manager on an X-box.
Ellis Short has waived his personal debt and helped clear the loan he had arranged with an American Bank who were charging £8m a year in interest alone. His only crime was to appoint executives who spent his money like it grew on trees on ridiculous things. The new owners’ first words were “The Piss Take Party Stops Now”, and boy has it, with spectacular results. The club has reconnected with the fans, the owners make visits to see fans who are too sick to attend, players attend fan sessions and willingly mingle, the owners do regular podcasts with the fanzine (perhaps Jay or Egg could get a 2hr interview every other month with Mr Royal and upload it to a podcast?).
Sure, we are 3rd division on the field, but off it, we are up there with the best.
Who is this Mr Royle bloke? Is he Latics chairman. Honestly, I’m not taking the piss but who is our chairman these days?Even stranger then. Why log in constantly when he cant post?Strange lad that Bullitt….
We all have our faults and he had a few like us all but he is Latics fan.
Why log in and post when you aren’t even a Latics Mon?I have same holidays as school kids Nuns.
Went over to Bishop Auckland from Alston yesterday. Not seen any Red and White shirts on anyone around our caravan site nor in any of the small towns in Weardale. Didn’t see any in Crook, Toronto or in the Tesco’s and shopping centre at Tindale Cross.
Where are they all? Keeping them clean for the group stages of the Checkatrade for the Visit of Boro’s juniors? Or maybe everyone’s deserted the third tier club and bought a bar code shirt to watch in the pub or at home. Will Griggs on fire, na na na na nah na na na na nah.
Bloody season seems to be starting early this season. Early August first league match.
Each to their own but I enjoyed the style of football prior to the Bobby era much more than during and since that era. Like I said some preferred his style but me and the two I sit with had a much greater preference to what came before.
Jason Scotland suited Bob’s dull boring style. Boseli has been one of many who have failed as strikers at One Up Top Tics!
Definitely Spurs but not arsed about either of the games and won’t even watch either of the hyped up shit.
Stilton.
Sorry Ste, but I would have more admiration if money wasn’t part of the recipe !
Money was a major ingredient in Paul Jewell’s success
Yes it was an ingredient but others before him struggled to get us out of the third tier. Paul did make the right signings, managed those signings, played the right kind of football too to get us twice promoted and also played football in an entertaining way. The best football I can remember. We haven’t seen the like since.Strings.
Hope Frank Lampards Derby County can the job. Yes the media are annoying but their fans are ok as opposed to Villa fans
General opinion is that Lampard will go to Chelsea.
Ideal scenario is that Derby get promotion so Villa, another BIG club don’t get to where they “deserve to be” and Derby fail miserably without Lampard.
And they cease to be Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
If he can fail at Chelsea then that’s an added bonus.
Hopefully it’s Derby as we have another sell on clause with Derby for Carson. -
