Long gone are the days when I let the result a football match affect my mood and my life, but I was a bit peed off last night.
But one thing that did cheer me up was the thought of a saddo dressed in red and white constantly pressing the refresh button on some or other sport site, waiting for an attendance below 10,000 to be announced, and then having to put it back in his kecks when it didn’t happen.
Thank goodness for those 5000+ visiting fans then.
Simply for treating the fans and supporters of Wigan Athletic with contempt. The 8000 missing fans from Saturday’s game with West Ham treated the club with contempt last night.
I’m glad I stopped at home too – that Reading v Arsenal game was a cracker!
Still, at least half the crowd at the DW tonight went home happy.
:cheer:
Interesting theory here fella and not one that I’ve seen on the rugby forums.
I think with that at this moment in time, the supporters of Wigan, Warrington & St Helens will all think the current playoff system is utter crap. The supporters of Leeds probably thought so until two years ago!
We are rewarding mediocrity – 8th place and a win ratio of less than 50% should not give you a tilt at the title, but as its one club, one vote, then the likes of Wakefield, Salford, etc will always vote to give themselves a chance of success – by limiting the playoffs to the top 4 or 5 would mean that mediocrity would no longer be even allowed to sniff a reward, let alone play for it. There should also be relegation – again we are rewarding mediocrity, but as London could well be relegated, this will not happen as the first rule of Superleague is that “A team in London will be kept at all costs”.
If we really must have playoffs and then a Grand Final, then IMHO the team that finishes top must automatically go to the final, leaving 2nd to host 5th and 3rd to host 4th, with the two winners playing a mini-final for the right to challenge top spot in a Grand Final. It has even been suggested by one of the Sky TV pundits in an article in the telegraph that the GF should be contested by 1st v the winners of 2nd v 3rd – that way, the likes of Leeds wouldnt be able to coast through the regular season, only upping their game come September.
This was the week after Wane had right royally fecked up with his selection for the game at Widnes, and there was a backlash from the fans – you know that because you and your mates had a right old giggle about it on here. London probably brought 8 fans, leaving 12600 home fans.
Compared with the final home game when the League Leaders shield was presented, and there was so much demand for tickets, that part of the North Stand was made available to Wigan fans. Saints brought about 1500 to that game by the way.
Generally crowds increase when there is success. I’m sure you will be able to recall the crowd at the DW in Dec 2004 when Gillingham were the visitors, and then compare it to the crowd in May 2005 when Reading were the visitors – did Reading bring the extra 11,000?
So based on that very long winded theory, the DW will be packed to the rafters for soccer matches if tickets are either free or very very cheap.
So based on your theory of it being a cost issue, we can look forward to a 20,000+ crowd for the visit of Bradford, when tickets are just £10 for adults and £5 for concessions. With it being half-term, you cant even use the “school night” excuse not to be there!
No, the question was “Where did these 5,000 fans that showed up for the Fulham game go to yesterday”?
Face facts – you have about 13,500 fans who will turn up to a league game if they have to pay (either cash or via a ST). Of those, less than half will turn up when the game is not part of their ST allowance.
Pretty much the same as Wigan Warriors.
First the best supported team in Wigan taking on arguably the form team in the EPL.Fulham – 19284 – approx 500 away fans. 18784 home fans
Everton – 18759 – approx 5000 away fans. 13759 home fans
Dress it up whatever way you want, but the FACT is the best part of 5000 home supporters went AWOL today.
Care to explain where they were Fatty?
lotp has not seen the recent poll on chubbie.com or he has and is totally not bothered to share it with us ,Lot of discontent on the M62 super highway enjoy SDWhttp://forums.rlfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=538459&tsmp=1349294659
I’ve seen it and I can see why people will not shell out for a ST or go to the playoffs. Sport has to compete with everyday life in these tough times, and if something is perceived to not be “sexy” enough (and the current playoff system is about as sexy as Bella Emberg) then it will come lower in the list of priorities than feeding your family.
Similarly, the novelty of Premier League Football seems to have worn off (success being defined as 17th place), which is why your crowds have suffered almost a 20% drop since 2006.
Huge difference in average atendance growth though:1994/95 – Wigan Athletic 1,841, Leicester 12,573, Warriors – 14,368
2011/12 – Wigan Athletic 18,633, Leicester 21,096, Warriors (2012) – 16,043Like I keep saying, our crowds are amazing considering where we were just 17 years ago, no other team in any sport anywhere in the world can claim a bigger growth. Leicester have done well to increase the amount they have done in the same period, the Warriors not so much!!!!!
The beauty of statistics is they can always be presented in a format to suit your agenda….Here’s another view.
If you were to compare “growth” since 2005/6, then you’d be in negative terrirtory for the Latics. Warriors would be showing a 15% increase.
If you were to compare “growth” from 1982, then the Warriors’ average has risen threefold, whilst the Latics’ has just about doubled.
If I was the CEO of a business that had lost custom over the past 7 years, I’d be fearing for my job.
Leicester tigers are bigger supported than both worryers & warrington and any other club in souper league for that matter! You forgot to add Wigan Athletic to your list.
goodpost
How dare you come on here with hard facts Mr Egg…. ;)
would you have brought that up if you had won………………….NO! it would have been “rugger town” this and “final” that, “wendyball” etc………….No – there wouldnt have been a thread on the subject had Warriors won. It tends to go quiet when that happens.
Remember the chall cup final 2010, over 17k at lunchtime against a newly promoted london side who brought under under 2kI do – wasnt that the day you had to move your massive fixture to accommodate a tin-pot pit village sporting fixture at a football stadium? And give away over 5,000 tickets to local kids.
Finally, before I leave you to your wank-fest and trip to the SOL tomorrow on Sudworth’s happy bus, I’ll give you the answer to the question you repeatedly ducked out of yesterday:
12181.
He meant that if the two sides who have consistently performed over 27 rounds of league fixtures got to slug it out in the final then you would have a great game between the two sides who had finished top of the pile. Sadly that isnt going to be the case and Leeds have timed their run to perfection again, having been pretty mediocre throughout the season.
However, they are there and we are not. At the end of the day, its a bloody game and there are far more important things going on in the world – earlier this week, I was involved at work in the hosting of the family of a young colleague of mine who was killed last year. If they can be strong over losing their 21 year old son, then a 1pt defeat to the current SL champions isnt going to have me reaching for the bottle of pills.
On the bright side for those who take delight in the town’s rugby side falling at the semi-finals – at least you have a chance of filling the ground for the Everton game now!
place in grand final between top 2 in the attendance table (albeit a pointless one inc teams that get 1k,2k 6k on). Anything less than 19k is a joke. I heard they’ve already used the “flooding @ saddle” excuse already.
Why can’t they just admit that, like 95% of the uk population, no one is interested or cares
sirdave, remind me how many showed up for the only major football semi final to ever be played at the DW?
i shall check when i finish work.
I’ll give you a link to help you find the answer:

I’m waiting with baited breath to see how many home fans turn out for the Capital One Cup game next month. No doubt there’ll be 4000 away fans to boost the figure so you’ll be crowing what a fantastic crowd turned up. My bet is that less Wiganers will turn out for this than did for a meaningless runaround against Catalan.
8000 home fans for this one please Sir Dave!!!
