How about four trips to Wembley in the same year, making seven in two years !

At least he’ll be able to take the positives from the game, and share them with the Everton fans !

Even the original poster seems to have lost interest long ago.

I’m not surprised. LostockHallLatic now looks rather foolish.

But there are still some people who love to wallow in any set back that Roberto suffers.

On to 600!

Good Evening WGTB,
Not lost interest, just been side-tracked in recent weeks.
How can one look foolish for asking everyone’s opinion “how long before RM has Everton at the wrong end of the league” ? A straight forward question that has provoked so much debate. I could of asked: How long before Owen Coyle get’s sacked, or How long before Paul Jewell manages another football club.

I also would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year.

However, please spare a thought for those who are not as fortunate, and for one reason or another may not be able to celebrate this normally joyous time as they would wish.

Also take a moment out and offer a small prayer also for all the loved ones who are no longer with us to celebrate.

Peace and goodwill to all.

Aye agreed.
Just been to a funeral of a good friend this afternoon ( HORC, you’ll remember Malcolm the Man Utd fan ). Fit and healthy but just dropped dead with an embolism. Absolutely terrible day that makes you thankful for every day that you wake up and enjoy. God rest his soul.

PJ didn’t hang around to see if he could keep us up a second time and yes RM took us down. But for 3 seasons he kept us up always against the odds, why don’t some people accept this?

The vast majority do. It’s only a few bitter people on this forum who, coincidentally, all seem to play together – thank Christ I don’t know where that pub is – and don’t seem capabale of having their own thoughts. One of ’em thinks something up, the others have to agree.

Most neutral observers seem to find it surprising that Martinez stuck with us as long as he did before trying to further his career.
You only become a bitter person when something happens to make you bitter. Check all the lightside / darkside threads and you will see that I was totally behind Bob 100%. Me you, Standish and a few others, fought long and hard to get some posters to understand Bob’s philosophy and tactical approach. He had a vision and stuck to it come what may and tbh, it was that stubborn attitude, that eventually cost us our place in the EPL.

As for this poll, you seem to belittling the posters who think he was a judas. The fact is that “at the moment” the majority of posters seem to have the view that he jumped ship when Wigan Athletic finally became a poisoned chalice and would no longer be an asset to his CV.
You claim that the vast majority of neutrals can’t understand why Bob stayed with us so long, well I’ll try and explain. He had a Chairman / friend that stuck by him when times got tough. Any other chairman would have sacked him long before the FA cup success, 9-1, 8-0, 8 straight defeats, etc. etc. He even told the world that Bob would manage a top 4 club, bumming him up to the hilt. How do you tell DW that you are leaving when he has single hand-idly helped to put you where you are?.

The poll may change as more posters can be bothered to take part, but at the moment, like it or not, the votes have shown that there are quite a few supporters who didn’t like the way Martinez dumped us.

You know me Griff, I have my own opinions and have agreed with your views / posts on many occasions, you have a good knowledge of football, but don’t forget there are a lot of others on here that also know their stuff and are entitled to their opinions even if it goes against what you think.

Anyway, I’ve noticed you have not voted yet, you’ve shown enough interest in this debate so get voting and close the gap!. B)
To add to WGTB’s tally…

I can’t understand why the term Judas is banded about regarding Martinez.

He never promised to stay with Wigan forever, and it was generally accepted that he’d be moving on to bigger and better things in the near future. Also it’s not as if he moved to Bolton or a recognised close rival of ours.

So why is he Judas?

All he did was move to a bigger club because the right opportunity came up. By all accounts, it was a deal brokered well before we were relegated so it’s not exactly a case of him jumping ship because we’d gone down. Stay up or go down, he was leaving anyway.

Plus, most of those calling him Judas had wanted him replaced for the past three seasons anyway.

So, go on someone, explain why the term Judas is used?

LHL has explained in depth many times his reasons for thinking Bobby is a Judas, you can troll back through the posts if you like, or maybe he might explain again when he next visits the site if he can be arsed.
We’ll leave it up to him eh.
I’m stil waiting for him to explain how he “knows” that the “only” reason we won the FA Cup is because Martinez told them to go out and don’t worry about losing and “not to play that boring shit I normally ask you to play”

I’m not holding my breath though – he’s doing nothing on this thread to disuade me from my view that he’s full of shit.
Let’s put it down to the fact that I’ve had more “one on one” time with Roberto, than you ever will; despite having your hand up his arse on you avatar !

in reply to: How Long Before “Bottom Four Bob” #125021

In all honesty, I think most managers could have kept us there with the resources and more importantly the backing he received from D Whelan.

The backing he received from D Whelan?

He had to reduce the wage bill by 25%!
That still left him with a budget big enough to keep us in the PL.
The backing I was referring to was more along the lines of ‘I won’t sack him no matter what happens’ which is virtually what DW said.
He may have had a few restraints, but the lack of any pressure from above at all more than made up for that.
Spot on again Horc. Big Dave was emotionally attached to Roberto, he almost considered him as a son; and that’s what allowed Roberto a far greater degree of “safety” than any other former Wigan Manager. Do you think he would have sacked Roberto if he had stayed and the club hadn’t performed any better than under Coyle. I think not !

Anyway, Roberto knew what the task was and signed up. Yes he did implement many positive aspects to the club and our play, but as you point out his win rate was very poor. At the end of the day he will always be measured on hard results and results speak for themselves: he failed and we got relegated. As I had said in previous posts, Roberto never actually claimed responsibility for any of those losses. He always had an excuse or deflected the issues by saying “there are positives that can be taken from the game”. What did he do with those positives ?
I was criticised for suggesting that he was not very bright, because he never put this learning to use. But maybe it doesn’t matter when you are in a “safe job”.

The road to Europe starts again against MK Dons.

Can you change you Tag Name from WGTB to Weregoingtoeuropeagain.

How we won the FA Cup. You’ve heard it before – the players were told to go out and play football and enjoy themselves because we didn’t need to play safety first, protect a point rubbish. Hey presto it worked.

It’s not quite as simple as that. There were two notable cup victories, against Everton and Manchester City. In both games, special circumstances affected both teams.

After the home defeat to Liverpool, 4-0 with Suarez scoring a hat-trick, Martinez had to make some changes. For the cup tie at Everton, he introduced Robles for Al Habsi, Alcaraz for Caldwell, Gomez for McArthur and McManaman for Di Santo. For his part, Moyes unwisely brought in Heitinga and Phil Neville. The replacements wanted to make an impression, while Neville had a shocker. Wigan raced into a 3-0 lead. Neville was replaced at halftime and never appeared for Everton again.

The players kept their places for the next league game, and an unchanged team beat Newcastle 2-1. Martinez put his trust in this team and made it his model for the rest of the season.

For the Cup Final, Martinez had to build a team without Caldwell, Figueroa and Beausejour. His choice of McArthur and Espinoza as wingbacks was inspired. Manchester City played with the rumour hanging over them that Mancini would be sacked at the end of the season. They never hit full stride and Wigan deservedly won.

Whether they won or lost the Cup Final, the game at Arsenal – just three days later – represented an enormous challenge for Wigan. In the event, it proved too much for them.
You really are as bad as Bobby and believe your own shoite. So why didn’t his “model” overcome Swansea ? It wasn’t the Arsenal game that lost us our place in the Premiership; it was all the other games against average teams where we dropped points that screwed us. In the final analysis he couldn’t muster up one single win out of any of those games to saves us !!!! Inspired you say; more like cloud cuckoo land. Legend to Judas in four years.
