I can see where GC is coming from…

Pre-season fixtures are all about impressing a new manager, getting match fitness and seeing how any new additions to a squad fit in with the existing members. As GC has just managed the vast majority of the squad throughout a successful season, then for him, it will be all about fitness and how the new additions fit into his tried and trusted formation and tactics.

I don’t get why either club is expected to pay the agent, who is employed by the player.

Pogba should be shelling out to this individual – after all, he’s acting on behalf of Paul Pogba, not Man Utd or Juventus.

How sad that your mood is judged by whether a club playing a sport you have no interest in wins or loses.

My weekend got better with a pre-season win at Rotherham in front of our new manager. I wasn’t even aware the latics were playing today, howver having checked the score, I see you were right about the goals starting to come.

You’ve missed my point Zeb. I don’t doubt Sanchez, Suarez etc are pampered now, but they weren’t pampered as 10 year old kids growing up in their South American towns.

Marcus Rashford has been with Man Utd since he was 7 years old. Rooney joined Everton at 9. Sturridge joined Villa at 10. Kane signed for Arsenal aged 8. If I had the time, I could probably continue with the entire squad, and find that almost every one of them had joined a premier league club by the time they were 10.

These players and their families will have been “looked after” by the rich premier league clubs throughout their early teens, all the way through to signing their first professional contract – that is what I meant by “pampered”.

20,000 on for the biggest derby in RL? We almost managed that for a pre season friendly last week!

You did. And if you continue giving up the 9000 Boston Stand for visiting fans, you might get close to 20,000 again sometime this season.

The FA could bring in Pep, Jose, Arsene, or any other world-class manager and it wouldn’t matter one iota. The fact is that the England squad do not have the hunger to win games for their country. They live pampered lifestyles a million miles away from reality, and have done so ever since they were first taken under the wing of whatever club developed them. None of them grew up kicking a ball in downtown city slums like Alexis Sanchez did in Chile.

When you have the likes of Marcus Rashford being given a rise from £7500 a week to £25000 a week, it makes your eyes water. Not at the £25,000, but the fact that as an unproven kid, he was earning in a week what the average supporter earns in 3 months – even the youth teams are killing the hunger by ever-increasing pay packets for 16 & 17 year olds!

well done to Hull FC on winning the League leaders shield, thats the treble and another elusive trophy gone west

The League Leaders shield is presented to the side that is top at the end of the season – there’s still 7 league fixtures to be played.

Good luck in your pre-season game at Rochdale – hopefully you’ll break your goalscoring duck soon.

Caldwell has said that it would take a lot of money for us to even consider letting him go but He will 100 per cent still be with this football club come the end of the transfer window.

I’d like to know what that figure would be considering the stupid sums players are going for at the moment

I’m not sure who you are talking about, but the stupid sums of money are only going to be splashed out by the premier league and the 3 clubs who have been relegated from the premier league – all the other clubs will have to live within their means.

At this moment in time, I very much doubt Latics have any player who would be sold to a premiership club this summer. Even Will Grigg, arguably your star man, is 4th choice NI striker way behind Lafferty who wasn’t good enough for Norwich reserves, and some kid who played a handful of games for QPR. Perhaps if he has a barnstorming first half of this season, then someone like Hull or Burnley may take a punt in January.

    And winning a league title.

I’d forgotten about that – probably because of the lack of an open-top bus parade to celebrate it, unlike Leicester, Burnley & Northampton – the other divisional winners. Perhaps rather like Sunderland in 1988, Wigan believed that winning the 3rd division was a bare minimum requirement, and anything other than a runaway title win was underachievement. That said, in 1988, there wasn’t £9m of Sky money bankrolling our runaway title, and we had to rely on getting supporters through the turnstiles to generate income, so perhaps the 1988 title win was a bigger achievement?

Anyway, back to your other, more relevant, question? If Sam becomes England manager, then of he available candidates, Moyes would do fine. Like Martinez, he took a job that was too much for him, not helped by Ferguson’s back-room staff being dispensed with.

That said, I’m wondering if the lack of an appointment by the FA is down to Allardyce wanting his own backroom staff, and not the FA’s “Yes men”. If that happens, then the compo due to Sunderland will be a heck of a lot more than just losing a manager who has 12 months left on his contract.

in reply to: Heard a rumour that martinez…. #149551

If it was what I read, it was one poster suggesting him as a possible replacement should Allardyce get the England job, followed by multiple replies saying “Hell, no”.

Everton was a step too far for a manager with limited coaching ability. Martinez should have stayed at Wigan. I’m pretty sure that the embarrassing 2014/15 season would not have happened with him in charge. DW wouldn’t have been branded a racist, and banned from his own stadium. Malky would still be waiting for another job. Owen Coyle & Uwe Rostler would have been someone else’s failures, and you wouldn’t have spent last season playing Bury, Fleetwood and Colchester.

Its now made national and international news.

Knobs indeed – whoever voted for him. Its more ridiculous than Ann Widdecomme in Strictly Come Dancing, seeing as she actually took part.

What next – Boaty Mc Boatface for the Balon D’or?

That chubster has got a lot to answer for….

    I thank you.

    in reply to: Thugby! #149532

Not really. I seem to remember Latics losing at home to Blackpool and Barnsley mid season – both of whom were at the bottom of the 3rd division – didn’t do them any harm. ;-)

Cracking crowd yesterday BTW – perhaps the Boston Stand should be offered to away fans more often.

….and perhaps you should play at home to St Helens 15 times per season…

Two of the above seasons latics played in the second tier, the worriers played all their games in the top tier.
Even when we have the figures for this last season comparison, when we played in the third tier, we will probably be still ahead. Must do better dipshyte![/quote]

Season Ticket sales would be a far better indicator, because they show how many home fans are willing to part with cash to attend. Relying on 5000 away fans and free tickets for home fans to substantiate your claim is hardly impressive – although of course it will always impress the likes of Bullshit who doesn’t think facts and evidence matter.

Sculthorpe stood in for Turley, Fielden stood in for Butt.

Rotten to the core Rugby League!

Where’s your proof of this claim. Link to an official article please.
