Agree that this is a cracking thread and the first person to de-rail it should be banned

I’m also a Wiganer having spent the first 18 years of my life in Ince. However, I’ve now spent more years living ‘down south’ than I did in Wigan. I met my wife in Cambridge and my children were born in Luton and raised in Milton Keynes. So it’s really my son’s story I’m telling.

From the moment he could walk he wanted to kick a ball. He’s now fifteen, but in those early years his only football teams were the ones he saw on TV and David Beckham quickly became a hero for him. He even got a Man Utd shirt with 7 and Beckham on the back. Then, when he was four, I decided it was time he went to see a ‘proper’ match at what was then the JJB.

He actually concentrated for most of the game and at one point when a player was booked turned to my dad and explained that meant “he’s been naughty, but doesn’t have to go home. If it was red he has to go home.” Bless.

Anyway, following year and he gets his first season ticket which also meant I got my act together and attended more games than usual. What makes his story for me is that he went to a small vilage school in North Bucks. Every other kid supported Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool or Man Utd. He got picked on and teased something rotten, but never, ever waivered in his support for us when it would have been so easy to switch to a big club. Coming out of Portman Road after seeing us lose for the first time he burst into tears (he knew he’d get teased at school and thought we’d blown our promotion chances). When he got his first shirt (Lidell on the back) we held a ceremony in the back garden and burned his old Man U shirt on the barbecue!

Today, he gets less stick from his mates (being six foot tall at 15 really helps). He’s never seen us lift a trophy, but he’s travelled the length and breadth of the UK and been to almost every away ground. He comes to almost all home games (320 mile round trip). He was the mascot at Highbury in the semi-final on that wonderful night. He was at our first game in the Premier League against Chelsea even though I was stuck on a plane in Iceland. He was at Stoke when Hugo scored and Bramall Lane when we clung on with Heskey as our best centre back.

His bedroom is blue and white and, if you cut him in half, so is he!

God knows what I’m really trying to say here, but I suppose I echo GL’s comments – This club is growing and this is how we are getting new supporters. The thing is, we should embrace everyone that shows the slightest interest in our amazing and wonderful ‘little’ club and get them converted to the WAFC religion.

Great story! Keep ’em coming chaps!

Because we are in big trouble if it’s true and confirmed.

        Kone Injury Concern

Wigan Athletic are hoping that the injury which forced Arouna Kone off in the win over Norwich on Saturday isn’t as bad as is feared.

The Ivorian scored the winning goal but was then brought off in the dying moments after complaining of a sore ankle. Initial treatment in the dressing room has led club doctor Mike Ashworth to believe that the striker has broken a small bone in his ankle which could keep him out for the rest of the season.

He is expected to undergo a scan at noon today to confirm the extent of the problem.

I hope this is a wind up & you are not tempting fate here chap.

Since hes come back, scharner has been a rock, but today was woefull. And webb, how the fuck two norwich players can go for same ball, both fall over and get a free kick and McCarthy a bollocking is beyond me

Who played brilliantly today eh? nobody. As for Scharner, everybody is entitled to have an off day aren’t they? we won, that’s all what matters at the end of the day with the situation we are in.

Up at 3:45 for a hard days grafting covered in sh1t for a medoicre wage, then sit them all down to watch the video “Highlights” of that pish of a performance we had to put up with on Saturday.THEN they might have a taste of the real world & improve but i doubt it.

Excellent article. I was watching SSN yesterday and Pinocchio tipped us for the drop. Think it was more wishful thinking seeing as his precious Liverpool can’t beat us.

I’m a bit surprised by Thompson’s prediction after the way he lauded us last season when we annhialated Newcastle.

Before i start, my tin hat is on ;)

My problem with all this is that Wigan Athletic are an established Premier League club, and with that comes certain expectations. We are way off the mark when it comes to transfer budgets and wages, when compared to the rest of the clubs in the league, and even compared to some in the championship, and i know that Whelan is trying to run a tight ship and not pay out extortionate wages, but the answer to that is that were in the wrong league then. The premier league attracts global audiences, expecting to watch top players, and the TV money paid is to keep that sort of talent in the league, thus making consistently good viewing, thats what theyre paying for.
Wigan are taking that money, the same as Stoke, Fulham, Everton, Sunderland etc etc, but not investing it in top quality playing staff.
Its like a law firm getting 10 million a year to represent high profile cases, then sending a binman into court on £300 a week.

I think alot of fans that once admired plucky little Wigan, are now getting a bit pissed off with us hanging around, spending sweet nothing, empty stadium, and just being ‘there’. Its understandable when you first get promoted to not go berserk with big signings and big wages, but when youve had 7 years of stability, 7 years of tv money, and bought and sold players for massive profit, is it not a fair risk to up the wages a bit, to even compete with our peers, to make the odd marquee signing to attract more fans? I think its a piss take myself, there comes a point where as an owner you have to invest some coin into your business and make it grow, he wouldnt have done this in any other of his businesses, just let it bumble along making a loss or just breaking even, he’d identify improvements, invest where required and make a success out of it, in order to compete with his rivals, the way the club is structured we can’t compete, so whats the point of even being there other than pissing off everyone that isn’t daft enough to keep throwing their own hard earned into something that gives little to nothing back, unless you get off on the annual relegation survival scrap that quite frankly has become a boring and should in no way be classed as a ‘success’, its a point or three away from abject failure, and unless he starts running it like a PREMIER LEAGUE club and not a poundstretcher it’ll be the same until we plummet down the leagues back to where we ‘belong’.

goodpost Couldn’t have put it better myself, Excellent post. Whelan HAS to start investing in quality players and pay that “bit extra” in wages or else we are going to struggle.
