I think we will do good, oh and I have it on audio that Martinez said we would ‘beat United’ this season. :woohoo:

Actually, I think it was one of the fans who said that and Roberto responded with “We have to, we have to”.

I thought they had both lost it. Then I looked round and saw I was sat next to Scoffy and Dave From Skem and realised I must have wandered on to the set of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. ;)

I simply can’t bring myself to believe that we will ever get anything out of a game with United. I seriously hope that tonight is the night that I’m finally proven wrong.
I’m the same but after having my facebook news feed inundated with nobeds patronising from pies to shit crowds when the closest they have ever got to a game is a trip to the manure megastore means I want nothing more than ANYTHING out of this game tonight.

I would quite literally trade my left testical for a 1-0 win tonight.

But coming back to reality and putting the mongoids of Salford to one side I would probably be happy if we just put up a really good performance against them.

Sorry but I have to completely disagree.

This 3-4-2-1 or whatever you wanna call it system played with the players we have has Latcis looking much stronger defensive & goign forward than we have done in a long time.
Take it away & you go back to the sometime shambolic centre half pairing of Caldwell & Alcaraz & put Figueroa back at left back where he’d barely played well in the last couple of seasons.
Going forward Latics seem to be creating far more chances & to change this system woudl take that away & go back to the system which was looking so poor & devoid of creativity earlier in the season.

The simple fact is that Latics are much stronger playing the current system. If you change it all about because of Valencia it takes that strength away – i think Latics would be far more likely to get a(nother) 4 or 5-0 hammering
No offence I just fail to see how changing a system that has brought only 1 defeat in the last 8 games would make Latics more likely to get a result

The new system is great yeah but what I am saying is if you think its going to work the same against Man Utd as it does against a poor Liverpool and Stoke then you’re in for a shock…

Let me be clear though my heart would like to see us go out in the current formation and have a go at dominating the game and winning with some of the great football we have been playing but my head tells me that is just not going to happen!

This time last season Birmingham had 1pt more than Villa have now with same amount of games played. We all know what happened to them don’t we !! McLeish is the key !! ;)

Yeah but they were only 2 points clear of the relegation zone whereas now they are 5 points clear…

BUT in saying that Birmingham took 5 points from the remaing 8 fixtures …

09.04.2011 – Blackburn Rovers away D1-1
16.04.2011 – Sunderland home W2-0
20.04.2011 – Chelsea away L1-3
23.04.2011 – Liverpool away L0-5
01.05.2011 – Wolverhampton Wndrs home D1-1
07.05.2011 – Newcastle United away L1-2
15.05.2011 – Fulham home L0-2
22.05.2011 – Tottenham Hotspur away L1-2

Its a tough run in for Villa this time around but Mcleish on paper has better players this time around?

07.04.2012 Liverpool away
09.04.2012 Stoke City home
15.04.2012 Manchester United away
21.04.2012 Sunderland home
24.04.2012 Bolton Wanderers home
28.04.2012 West Bromwich Albion away
06.05.2012 Tottenham Hotspur home
13.05.2012 Norwich City away

With recent form as D-D-W-L-L it might be twitchy bum time but come the end of the season I honestly think they will be safe….

Its always going to be twitchy bum time though when you are hiring second choice as your manager :side:

The players have got used to playing this system now, appear very comfortable with it & they all appear to know their roles within it so I think it would be suicide to start messing around with it now.

With regards to Beausejour’s lack of defensive experience, if either wing back gets caught out when pushed up then the idea is that the “spare” centre half covers.

I’m a great believer that a manager should play their strongest line up regardless of who the opposition is. When you start taking away your own strengths to focus on those of the opposition then you are starting to play with fire

The only downside of the current formation is that Latics still do not have anyone suited to playing the strikers role – or rather we only have 1 (Sammon) & he isn’t good enough for this level from the more I see of him

I agree but being realistic we can expect to be dominated for large parts of this game we cant go out there thinking we can dominate the way we have previously.

Valencia is without a doubt their saving grace this season.

Blackburn played well on monday they kept united quiet for periods.

But they had Rooney and Scholes playing the left side of midfield firing balls out constantly to Valencia who must hit 29/30 attempted crosses into the box on average…

He is practically undefendable.

I think to set up in the current formation would be suicide.

A 7-0 smashing of Man utd is the last thing we need going into a relegation battle.

All in all I dont think the referee will make a blind bit of difference if we are not 100% at the top of our game.

Even then we will probably need a few strokes of luck.

I can see Martinez changing the tactics for this one.

If they play Valencia he will have a field day getting in behind Beausajor so I think a flat back 4 could be on the cards….

Terrible games ‘controlled’ by Dowd:
The Arsenal away semi-final of the league cup.
The Blackburn game in our first prem season – Jewel getting into trouble.
2007 at Arsenal (again).
The boxing day just gone against Manchester United.

I’m sure there’s more too which I have missed out. All four of the above were not just a few bad decisions, they were pure incompetence! I personally feel that there is only one way to go about this. We’ve got to let Dowd know from the start of the game that we are not happy with him and be on his back throughout the match. If the whole crowd noticibly show their anger towards him from the second he enters the pitch, that’s got to put a lot of pressure on him to step up. If it’s very noticible he will realise that the media will pick up on this and will therefore be more likely to judge his display. It’s exactly what the ‘big’ clubs do I guess…

All the refs nowadays are a bit pally with the big players and this is obviously effecting their decisions e.g. blatant elbow on McCarthy…

I honestly wouldnt reccomend getting on the guys back though he seriously seems the type that it would spur him on just to stick the boot in more…

But all in all I am with you the guy is an idiot.

Its gonna be hard but the lads are really giving it a go,we went 9 games without a point and almost 7 months without a home win we shouldnt even expect to still be in with a chance. We are though and the manager and players are talking positively and results are starting to come.So surely the least they can hope for from us the fans is that we too try to be positive and rally behind the team.C,mon Fil and try to be upbeat eh? im the biggest pessimist on here but at least now the fight has returned to the manager, players and fans alike. We may fail in the end but we can say at the minute we are having a right bloody go at it.

I am behind them 100% just wish the penny had dropped earlier that’s all ! We have found today that a great win can pale into insignificance because 2 of our relegation rivals equalled us ! That is what I find frustrating ! Not negative just frustrated that it has taken this long ! I am the only one who thinks we can get something out of the Utd game !!!!!
Does that mean then that QPR’s victory has paled into insignifance? A win at Arsenal and come off to find they,ve gone nowhere.
As for insignificant, had we lost we woulb be 3 points behind. As it is, were all together seperated by goal difference.
I’m off out, bigger fish to fry but try reading my posts properly !!
