I wouldn’t be surprised if O’Neill tempts him away regardless of whether we go down or not ! If they go down and we stop up then he may just stay put but any other scenario and he will go to Sunderland in my opinion !

I doubt it. O’Neil signed him for Villa and he was shocking.

Maloney knows which side his bread’s buttered on these days, and he’s praised Martinez for relaunching his career.

I can’t see him going to someone like Sunderland.

You would think if the Sunday People are in the know that O’Neil wants Maloney him and his agent would have a good idea too and wouldnt be the only player to sign a new contract post January.

The fact O’Neil used him largely as a left winger should be more than enough to put Maloney off going back under his management as it is a complete waste of his ability and I dont think O’Neil’s usual system can accomodate him.

Really got on my nerves that when Mcleish bought N’Zogbia a player who had been playing some of the best football of his career over on the right of a front 3 only to play him on left as an odl school winger?!?!?

I am no football manager but I could tell Mcleish a thing or two about what attributes you need for those two positions.

N’Zogbia could be available at the end of season!

Beausejour tenth in all season stats for assists in Premier League. Not bad for what many believe is a fat waster on the wing!

Not quite sure why you’ve mentioned Beausejour here unless it’s a veiled reference to the notion he provides a substantial amount of cover for Figueroa. However, that statistic is not a surprise to me. I’m also not surprised no one has mentioned his superb pass for Kone’s second goal yesterday because that would mean a good number of numpties on here having to back track on their opinion of him being “a fat waster on the wing”.
Let’s have it right Sammy, Beausejour has hardly set the prem alight this season has he. He had one of his better games against Reading for sure but for too many games this season he has been average.
He’s not the only one in a Wigan shirt who has “hardly set the prem alight this season” though is he, so why single him out? However, as bigroy stated in an earlier post, “Beausejour (is) tenth in all season stats for assists in Premier League”. Assuming that is correct, and I’ve no reason to believe it isn’t, that is “tenth” in the entire Premier League so his place in the team can be justified on that statistic alone.
Some people just don’t see, or don’t want to see, the bigger picture.
I’ll judge a player on what i see them do on the pitch and at the moment Bo doesn’t cut it for me. He cannot take a man on and beat him for pace. Most of his crosses come from one two’s or when he is found is acres of space. Some of the crosses he puts in are great no doubt, one against Southampton sticks in my mind where Di Santo got on the end of it and brought a save from their keeper. It just doesn’t seem to happen often enough.

Bo has no competition for his place and until such a time that he does he will be first choice and top the stats for us. Maybe now that we virtually have a fully fit squad he may be able to concentrate more on his attacking prowess and change a few peoples mindset?

You state Jean doesn’t take a man on and beat him for pace? If he isn’t blessed with pace then surely playing one-two’s and creating acres of space for himself is a skill itself?

Also, when have you ever seen Beckham (one of the slowest wide players ever) take a man on and beat him for pace? Has that halted his career at all?

This thread is about Figueroa though who, in my opinion played a blinder at Reading BUT spends too much time out of position defensively. He’s also a liability in the tackle and constantly gives away silly free kicks. He’s also got to be top of our list for conceding penalties.

…including McCarthy and Maloney, and perhaps Kone too.

          McCarthy… ye.

But who have the other 2 been linked with?
Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill wants to sign Wigan playmaker Shaun Maloney at the end of the season, writes the Sunday People.

O’Neill wanted the Scotland international in the January window but Latics talked him into signing a new long-term deal. However, O’Neill plans to go back in the summer for a player he had under his wing at Celtic and Aston Villa. If Wigan go down – or Sunderland offer at least £2.5million – then the crafty midfielder will be on his way to the Stadium of Light.
Absolute rubbish.

Considering this is the first I’ve heard of it, and the fact it has been mentioned nowhere else, I will presume it has just been made up to fill a gap.

I think StandishWalker summed it up perfectly.

In my honest opinion, Maloney will be going nowhere. I’d bet my car on it (I’m on a winner either way – you’d be doing me a favour taking it off my hands) ;)

Also, the “Kone to Liverpool” rumour is even more ridiculous – but I think that was mentioned in another thread.

The only ones I can see generating interest are McCarthy and our “out of contract in Summer” players.

Maybe on a fee. I’ll always be grateful Wigan had him for the West Ham game & the Arsenal comeback. He had pace & would take on people 1 on 1. But really, he played no defense/did not track back, could not cross the ball, and in general had very poor decision making/game IQ. Either he got by somebody 1 on 1 – or often he turned it over. I don’t think he was up to the level of Valencia, Moses, Maloney, or even Bullard.

I can’t believe we sold him for what we did – by far the biggest ripoff we’ve ever executed on another club (no – I’m not forgetting Palacios).
