Lets give the bloke a chance ffs. He’s only been manager for one hour and already he’s being written off before a ball has been kicked. Iwas surprised as anyone about an hour ago when my mate text me with the news, my reply was ” are you taking the piss” but after my knee had stopped jerking i thought iam a wigan athletic fan, its a new start lets get behind the bloke and give him some support instead of fucking moaning about it, you never know. He’s been around the place for years all the players are familiar with him they might even start playing for him ‘cos they obviously havent for mackay. If it doesn’t work out so be it, but lets get behind him and the team, we’ve nowt to lose at the moment.
7 April 2015 at 11:34 pm #140968Everyone has to start somewhere plus not many managers will want league 1 football
7 April 2015 at 11:36 pm #140969As somebody has pointed out on another site didn’t Swansea appoint a former player with no managerial experience? Twice. And Martinez and Monk haven’t done bad for themselves. The problem with experienced managers willing and able to take us on is that they are experienced in failure. I’m pleased with this appointment. Young keen and full of fresh ideas. And probably not a table tennis table in sight.
7 April 2015 at 11:42 pm #140970I’m just glad that Caldwell wasn’t seriously injured when some soft tvvat skimmed a season ticket over his head during the Derby game.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!7 April 2015 at 11:46 pm #140971People need to stop moaning and take a step back and think.
Look at the top 4 or 5 clubs in the PL how many of them are managed by great players?
Alex Ferguson hardly set the world on fire as a player either.
Great players like Souness,Robson, Gullett Pearce Shearer were shit managers.
Give the guy a chance.
We’re down anyway but we may get a little bit of pride back.
Lets wait and see.

Any top Manager has queue of cop clubs after their services; whereas the Managers that would actually come to Wigan are journeymen with plenty baggage and failures on their CVs.
8 April 2015 at 12:10 am #140976Just watched Caldwell’s first interview as manager and you can see he desperately wants success at the club. Some good honest words also from the Chairman in the same interview.
I realise they have to be positive, but like when Martinez first took over, he loves the club for what it is or despite what it is. That’s a really important attribute / attitude for a manager of our club to have.
Lets get 100% behind him no matter what happens for the rest of the season or what division we are playing in next season. we will still be Wigan Athletic, the biggest little club in the world.

Yep, good words of wisdom JR.
You’re often a sensible contributor.8 April 2015 at 12:21 am #140981Plenty of mentions of knee jerk reactions from fans on this news but is it not a knee jerk reaction from the club to appoint GC permanently? Yes we should get behind him even though it is akin to closing the gate once the horse has bolted but surely the decision to give him the job the day after MM got sacked is a little odd is it not? The backroom staff staying as well makes me think that the club are after ‘Yes Men’ This will not end well in my opinion!
8 April 2015 at 12:36 am #140983Malky was under the threat of the sack at the Reading away game. A win saved him. So maybe Sharpy has had plan B drafted up for a few weeks. Watch the interview and feel encouraged, could turn out to be a refreshing change that we need.
8 April 2015 at 12:37 am #140984I have more time in my little fingernail for GC than I will ever have for Mackay, but his permanent appointing is baffling esp. as it’s being reported that Sharpy has said he was the only candidate they considered.
Have we learnt nothing from the snap decisions for our last 3 managers? Is Sharpy implying that nobody else was being sounded out? Why even say something like that? What sort of amateurish decision making is this?I just just just don’t get it, but then again I haven’t got much this season :(
Good luck Gary, but I fear like Hutchings you’re being set up to fail…

When you take your head out of the clouds, come up with a sensible choice with trademark success and no baggage. Mmmm, not easy is it
8 April 2015 at 12:48 am #140988It’s just the way we pile straight in with little thought it appears. Think we are all United in hoping GC does well. Just hard to be convinced.
8 April 2015 at 12:54 am #140991It’s the leadership whose head is in the clouds. I can think of several experienced names that could fit the bill, but my gripe isn’t so much Gary (and him knowing and understanding our club is undoubtedly an asset).
My gripe is the process that yet again seems rushed and not thought through. What experience has he really got? If he was the only candidate, why? Did we really not consider ANYONE else? And if he was such a shoe in, why hasn’t he been part of the 1st team coaching set up for a while to bed him in? Caretaker I get, but so quickly appointed as permanent? Baffling.
He has my support – MM never did – but like Fil I don’t see this ending well.
