How we won the FA Cup. You’ve heard it before – the players were told to go out and play football and enjoy themselves because we didn’t need to play safety first, protect a point rubbish. Hey presto it worked.

It’s not quite as simple as that. There were two notable cup victories, against Everton and Manchester City. In both games, special circumstances affected both teams.

After the home defeat to Liverpool, 4-0 with Suarez scoring a hat-trick, Martinez had to make some changes. For the cup tie at Everton, he introduced Robles for Al Habsi, Alcaraz for Caldwell, Gomez for McArthur and McManaman for Di Santo. For his part, Moyes unwisely brought in Heitinga and Phil Neville. The replacements wanted to make an impression, while Neville had a shocker. Wigan raced into a 3-0 lead. Neville was replaced at halftime and never appeared for Everton again.

The players kept their places for the next league game, and an unchanged team beat Newcastle 2-1. Martinez put his trust in this team and made it his model for the rest of the season.

For the Cup Final, Martinez had to build a team without Caldwell, Figueroa and Beausejour. His choice of McArthur and Espinoza as wingbacks was inspired. Manchester City played with the rumour hanging over them that Mancini would be sacked at the end of the season. They never hit full stride and Wigan deservedly won.

Whether they won or lost the Cup Final, the game at Arsenal – just three days later – represented an enormous challenge for Wigan. In the event, it proved too much for them.
You really are as bad as Bobby and believe your own shoite. So why didn’t his “model” overcome Swansea ? It wasn’t the Arsenal game that lost us our place in the Premiership; it was all the other games against average teams where we dropped points that screwed us. In the final analysis he couldn’t muster up one single win out of any of those games to saves us !!!! Inspired you say; more like cloud cuckoo land. Legend to Judas in four years.
Are you STILL going on about Martinez???? What a boring set of twats you PRn lot really are!

Relegation was always on the cards we did amazing to stay in there so long. All I know is that the greatest day in my life happened in May and the name Wigan Athletic is now etched on the most famous trophy in the world.I really don’t understand how Martinez can be pilloried by so many of you on here. He performed a miracle at Wembley don’t hate the guy because he couldn’t perform another miracle in the league.

I’d love to know where you got this information. Seriously, not being funny, I would.

But I do love good football – and we haven’t seen much since the Cup Final.

To be fair it was only seen on rare occasions prior to the cup final.
Martinez set out to play good football. To be fair, with his squad, it was not sufficient to overcome enough Premier League teams. /quote]

Barnsley, you really do have a bad case of Bobbyitus and just continually gloss over the facts. Don’t blame the squad; he built it over 7 transfer windows and claimed he only needed 4 windows to get the right team. The expectation on him at Wigan was not a Champions league spot ( unlike Everton ), it was merely to assemble a side to compete with the average teams in the lower half of the division – he FAILED. He made some useless signings; some that he bizzarely never gave a fair chance to play. His stubborn approach to tactics, actually cost us too many points in the end. And now for the revelation – How we won the FA Cup. You’ve heard it before – the players were told to go out and play football and enjoy themselves because we didn’t need to play safety first, protect a point rubbish. Hey presto it worked. But Bobby wasn’t brave or bright enough to apply that to at least one league game that might have saved us from relegation. Then his super sized Ego ( must be through his association with Griff )leads us to believe he couldn’t possibly manage in the Championship. Not once in four years did you ever hear Bobby openly accept any blame for a poor result or bad performance; it was either bad refereeing decisions, injuries, bad luck, lack of budget, etc, etc; but never Bobby. From Legend to Judas in four disappointing years !

You can call Martinez lots of things, but saying his has a lack of intelligence smacks of just thinking up an insult for the sake of it. Why not go the whole hog and say he’s ugly and he smells too?

While I think about it Nuneaton, never swear in a football ground either, and don’t let the bloke on the row behind you eff and blind either because you’ll still get blamed for it even though you dared to call Jordi shit.

No problem with swearing at football matches as long as there aren’t 9-year old kids in the vicinity to hear it.

Bloke in the row behind? Then why did you say it was you? ;)

When a young boy turns to you as young Griff did, whether you have said something or not, you have to apologise, if not directly for yourself, then collectively for others around you.
Anyway, please accept my apologies again for anything offensive I personally may have said, and I hope young Griff has not been scarred too badly by it.

Kettle calling the pan there Griff. I think the pro Martinez posters have commented as much if not more.

You don’t have to be pro-Martinez to recognise that the posts about Bottom Four Bob are usually untrue and often bizarrely ridiculous.

You don’t have to be pro-Martinez to want to correct them. It’s encouraging to find that there are so many fair-minded people.

And in return you don’t have to be anti-Martinez to recognise that some folk will never say a bad word against him and are effectively praising him for on the pitch failure.

You also don’t have to be anti-Martinez to enjoy this thread…but it helps ;)

No amount of lobbying on here will make me or you change their opinion toward Martinez.
Some of the comments might sound ridiculous to you, but nevertheless it doesn’t make them factually untrue.
If they are untrue, then you are right they do need correcting.
If it is just your opposite opinion on something, you are just stating your own personal thoughts on a topic, so it neither needs correcting nor can be corrected because it is an opinion not a fact. It can however be opposed by an opposite opinion and whether that is correct depends on the opinion of others.
I am glad that you are encouraged that there are four or five other people on here that you feel are fair minded, but that does leave a further 15,000 or so Latics fans that have yet to comment for or against Mr Martinez.

And there are those who appreciated what he was trying to achieve at the club and recognised that he was and still is a good football manager – despite his failures.

So that’s about four of us and about four of you.

Come on, where’s your answer? Cos even though I’ve “heard it before”, I’ve only actually heard it from you.

Or is it just the usual made-up bollocks?

At the end of the day he failed due to various reasons but he did manage to write us into the history books and for that we should be eternally grateful !Yes, most of us could see what he was trying to achieve but he just did not have the players to pull it off ! I thought he would struggle initially, losing Baines and Fellaini and that it would take time transitionally with his footballing style etc and so I struck up a bet with the guy who cuts my hair that they wouldn’t finish in the top 8 and for that reason alone I want that to happen this season ! Baines didn’t go in the Summer and he managed to get a couple of decent loan players in and because of that has been able to maintain Everton’s usual league position for this time of the year ! My bet doesn’t look to good as we speak but you never know ! I can see them finishing about 6th which is Everton’s norm is it not ! In a further 18 months he should be challenging for a top 4 spot or in my opinion he will not have achieved what his chairman really wants of him and if he is indeed as good as his last chairman says then he should be winning the league ( Finances allowing ) within the next 4 years ! Good luck to him I say and let’s now put this thread to bed, whadya say!
