A pretty wealthy guy/company it seems.

My big concern is what they will do once they have spent a few quid and we haven’t made it back to the Prem.

I’ve been looking at this, and Googling like mad, and it all becomes muddied. Not bad, not good – I just can’t tell. Which of course is the objective.

The finances of IED are actually, I think, irrelevant. That’s the holding company in the name of which the deals will be done.

The core sentence in the link Egg provides is: “In the opinion of the Directors, the holding company of the Company is Brighten Path Limited, which is incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, and the ultimate holding company of the Company is Head and Shoulders Direct Investment Limited.”

Both of these companies “appear” to be in the hands of one man: Chiu Fai Choi.

His business profile is here (also click on the “Read Full Background” button):-
      https://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/people/person.asp?personId=29928586&privcapId=274860571

The Cheng family have been mentioned as the people taking over, but they sold IED to Dr Choi in 2017 and no members of the Cheng family are on the board.

However, if you look at Dr Choi’s profile you will see that he is actually described as “He has 23 years of experience in securities, futures, financial derivative products and merger and acquisition projects”.

The only thing that is certain to my belief (which means it’s not at all certain :) ) is that somewhere there is an individual who wants to own a football club – Dr Choi? One of the Cheng family? Who knows.

I certainly wouldn’t get hung up about who IED are, or where they are based, or whatever. They are a front name for whoever wants to buy in.

Well, that’s my reading of it, but I could be very wrong. I often am (but don’t tell anyone that!)
All seems millions of miles away from Communism!!
Eh? Where’s communism mentioned?!
Nowhere, but all the talk of Chinese billionaires just seems funny for a Communist totalitarian state.
You need to drag yourself into the 21st century regarding the business dealings of Chinese entrepreneurs.

And, Dave. They are amongst the richest business people in Asia, and that really is saying something.

If these guys are so rich, then they could easily afford to terminate the contract with the rugby and pay them the £20m or so compensation that may be due for buying out the remainder of a 50 year lease. That would be recouped with one season in the prem.

Similarly, if they are so rich and the pitch does hinder the progress up the league, then these guys are rich enough to move the football club to a purpose-built stadium that isnt below the water line, and that is full every week, as they wont want to have “their” club on TV in the far east playing to a 30% full stadium.

With DW, we knew what we were getting – an honourary Wiganer who loved the town, but these new owners have no affinity to the town, and could easily move their club to an area where there is a bigger fanbase.
Where would Wigan Athletic have a bigger fanbase?
Milton Keynes?
Now Sammy; that is funny for you :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Normally you come across as very drole.
I feel I ought to take that as a compliment.

Well Mr Whelan has agreed to sell and the deal has to be completed by the 14th. So come next Thursday we should have new owners and all will become clear.

I’ve tracked down now that the takeover lead, Stanley Choi, is in fact the same person as the poker player:

        https://gamblingcompliance.com/premium-content/insights_analysis/poker-champ-stanley-choi-takes-over-manila-casino-hotel

It all starts to fit into place if you (no pun intended) lay the cards out side by side. The only question is whether it will be good or bad for Latics.

Dr Choi (as we’ll call him in his business life) is a very successful financial manager. His business dealings are concealed beneath a very tangled web of inter-relationships. Nothing sinister in that, it’s quite normal. But he seems to have no interest whatsoever in football.

Stanley Choi is a successful poker player, but if you have lots to start with then you can hold your nerve longer and watch those around you fold.

IED have as their main business a hotel in the Philippines. I suspect (and this is only my view) that Dr/Stanley Choi having enjoyed playing poker, now wants his own casino, and maybe casino empire. Stepping on from that I would guess at him then looking to build a worldwide gambling empire – his business acumen and his fondness for gambling would mean this is a perfect venture for him.

There is a big betting market in the UK, Paddy Power, Bet 365 etc, and one way into that market is through football. Owning a potentially succesful (in relative terms) football team, complete with shirt advertising, stadium naming rights etc etc, and TV advertising could (a) raise the profile in the UK, and (b) provide leverage back home with games televised and spot betting pushed.

The good thing for us may be that investment from someone very rich could drive us forward.
The bad thing maybe that it doesn’t work as he planned, and loses interest, or tries a different business model. After all as I said he seems not to have football in his heart.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Announced at the Blackpool game with a farewell from Whelan?

            My great concern is this.

Say it all goes a bit ‘Hong Kong’ and he ends up leaving us in the deep doodah, and in danger. There’s no local businessman gonna step in and save us like before, we’ve played that card.

For me, there are too many unclear elements to do with this deal. When it happens they are going to have to do some talking to let people know their actual intentions. We are going from owners we know very well, to an overseas investment group who we know dribs and drabs about. His perceived lack of interest in football is very worrying.

Anybody who isn’t worried… You should be.

Can’t be any worse than Venkys, and Rovers are still alive !

The same Venkys who chucked 100 mil into Rovers and saw it blown by The succession of bad managers. By the time Coyle went in there, they were trying to make their money back by putting another 10 million in. Chasing their debts.

The mad thing is, Dave Whelan is totally against gambling. His son had a gambling habit, and Whelan hates it with a passion. Yet he is selling us to a casino organisation headed by a professional gambler, the Poker playing Mr Choi. It kind of goes against everything he has ever said about his feelings towards gambling.

I share the same concerns as yourself on this one vat. And i’m not buying into this belief that if it all goes hong kong, then WAFC will become a supporters run club.

I hope i’m wrong, but i too am worried.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned anything about the new owners coming in & changing the colours of our shirts or nicknames a la victor tan.

That might remind our gambler of a pile of coloured chips on a green baize, so might not be pie in the sky just yet.
I’ve been reading a lot about this organisation and the worry for me is they don’t appear to really know what they want and have been like this since their inception.
First it was internet provision, then they dabbled in film making, moving onto hotels and leisure, plus a load more ventures in between. This could probably be a toe dipping exercise, which if it doesn’t work, will result in us being dropped and left to wind down. Who knows at this stage, I’m just glad it’s being sorted before Big Dave pops his clogs. Whatever happens, I’ll still be watching um be it Premier League or Wigan Ammy League.
