Why on earth was the national anthem being played? The queen wasn’t there, she and Harry were busy getting ready for the next fancy dress party – dressed as ……. one arm raised!! It was only a friendly. Are we now going to have to listen to the derge before every game at the DW? At least James tried. Looking at the picture, maybe he’d spotted an alligator next to his boot.

          Good on him I say!

          Why good on him?

If he can find it within himself to play in Britain and happily accept the money given to him by his British club, the least he can do is respect their National Anthem.

The poppy issue – yes I can understand that.

This one however is disrespectful towards the fans who help pay his wages.

          It’s an American thing.

They play their own at every game, so probably thought we’ll throw the British one in as well – and are shocked when the British players aren’t singing loudly with tears in their eyes and hands across their hearts.

The other non-british players in WBA’s team managed to show respect for the National Anthem.

Per Mertesaker & Mezzut Ozil managed to show respect for the British National Anthem at the last two FA Cup Finals. As did Tevez, Aguero, Zabaletta etc at City’s last two cup finals.

This terrorist sympathiser is an embarrassment to his club, their fans and the premier league. It’ll not be long before WBA peddle him. He really needs to go to Celtic if he wishes to persue a career in the UK.

There is no reason why that royalist and triumphalist dirge should be used at club level! If you understand his reasons for not wearing a poppy then you should also understand why he refuses to join in with that xenophobic ditty! After all those troops are the Queen’s troops or so she says! Good on him for standing up for his beliefs, I too wouldn’t sing the anthem either, I find it offensive but I live and work here!

When all is said and done James has a right not to sing his own national anthem and God Save The Queen is the National anthem of James country the UK so leave the lad alone he is as British as us all and it is his right to sing or not sing like everyone else is in our country. He can play the Republican card all he wants but he is still from Ulster which despite allmighty intimidation from Republican terroists is still part of the UK.

Whether you’re offended by it or not really depends on your political viewpoint I guess.
Had he still been at Latics & done it before the game against Southport would I have found it disrespectful towards me as a fan? – not in the slightest. The anthem doesn’t represent me & nowhere within its lyrics does it mention us as citizens. It’s a song about an unelected head of state born into immense wealth & power and has no relevance to me whatsoever.
Personally I find the anthem itself far more disrespectful & offensive to me than what James McClean did at the weekend

              Sorry, disagree completely.

It’s more a matter of patriotism, and as someone who is proud to be British, I found it downright disrespectful considering he has chosen to make a living in Britain.

Forget the lyrics. They were written 200 years ago and lost their relevance a long time ago.

These days the song is a representation of being British, and not a literal collective hope that God saves a miserable looking 80 year old woman so she can be victorious, happy and glorious.

In essence whatever statement he thinks he’s making, he’s actually saying ‘I hate Britain and I’m only here for the money’.

I understood and respected his stance regarding the poppy – which is a direct British military reference, but this one is a step too far.

Keeping stony silent and even bowing his head would have done rather that his grand gesture.

Like I said, how you feel about what McClean did at the weekend depends on your political standpoint or personal beliefs.
To you the national anthem is not about the lyrics & is just a representation of being British. I can’t speak for McClean but personally I can’t forget the lyrics – they’re all about deference & support of an archaic institution that has no place in modern democracy IMO. “Long to/Born to reign over us”??? No thanks, and I neither sing it nor stand to attention for it when its played at any event that I’m at so in that sense I have no problem with what he did.
Am I a patriot? No – I’m proud of who I am & part of that is being British I guess & I want England/UK to win at various sports but my loyalties lie beyond simply which piece of land I had the fortune/misfortune to be born on & whichever person I’m told has a God given right to be my head of state

I can understand your viewpoint but I can completely understand his too

I agree with Standish W on this one !

Anyway Tyldesley Latic, you’ll have to know the words to the anthem for the “unites States of Europe” soon; once our sovereignty & identity have been stolen away from us !

Whilst i agree he has every right not to do it (as are his beliefs and rights as a human) i have to completely agree that the fact he deliberately turned his back and showed his disgust for it was a step too far. Everybody knows his stance on it and knows he wouldn’t have crossed his arm over his chest singing boisterously but he has started playing on it now, Letting everybody know every time it’s time to do it again. The show of petulance was (well petulant) but i agree. He should have just stood in the line and bowed his head. The Americans wouldn’t have had a clue what was going on but he made that much of a scene everybody couldn’t fail to notice.
