James McClean is guilty of nothing more than rank bad manners. Knowing his views and his explanation for holding them, he would have gained my unreserved respect by showing his own respect to others.
To those of you wanting a Republic, all I can say is be careful what you wish for (I also said that when people were hoping we would get relegated from the Premier League).
Who would we have for President? Sepp Blatter, Len McCluskey, Griff? … come to think of it, might not be a bad idea – “GRIFF for PRESIDENT”
Well, if I could count on you vote, Mr Git…?[/quote]
You most certainly could. In fact, if you were running against Fil I would sell my house to fund your campaign.
22 July 2015 at 1:42 am #143408This is not about the words of an anthem or whether a nation is a monarchy or a republic. Anthems , rightly or not , are viewed as symbols of a country and therefore evoke great passion and emotion. They often move grown men to tears. McClean’s actions were totally disrespectful to another nation and worse still the nation in which he plies his trade. Did he not think he may be insulting his own clubs fans.
If he had chosen to do that before a competitive Ireland v England game the consequences could have been horrendous. I understood his poppy stance but I now believe he’s not only an idiot but he’s a dangerous idiot.

22 July 2015 at 2:03 am #143410Squire the lad is from Londonderry which makes him a citizean of this nation. Not sure if he has a Grandad or Uncle or a distant relative from the republic that allows him to play for them but Londonderry is as much part of this country as Bristol, Middleborough or Keswick.
22 July 2015 at 2:33 am #143413………..but Londonderry is as much part of this country as Bristol, Middleborough or Keswick. Not if you’re from Dublin, or Cork, or Killarney it isn’t Ste……….or at least, it didn’t used to be.
22 July 2015 at 2:42 am #143414Well they should look at a Atlas Ant or ask Bill Hunter.
22 July 2015 at 2:44 am #143415Or a history book ?
22 July 2015 at 3:29 am #143419Many players from the R O I and Ulster have played in the English league and I cannot recall any of them other than McClean doing this before. The toerag can spout all the crap he wants but there is no excuse. He needs to be drummed out and sent packing.
22 July 2015 at 3:32 am #143420I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with any of that ………….. but it still doesn’t re-write the history books.
22 July 2015 at 7:05 pm #143429The guy is a disgrace. Plain and simple.
22 July 2015 at 10:20 pm #143443If he had chosen to do that before a competitive Ireland v England game the consequences could have been horrendous.Except there would be no reason for him to do the same in an Ireland v England game.
23 July 2015 at 1:47 am #143452What history book is that Moonay.
Ireland was occupied by the Vikngs for hundreds of years before the Kings of the different provinces spent a couple of hundred years at war with each other before one of these kings asked Henry the 2nd to help him out and the rest is history. Ireland was annexed and became a part of the UK. Eventually the South gained independence with the Northern Province of Ulster staying within the UK. The south became poor before it prospered through Euro handouts but again even with massive freebies from the Germans and UK the South struggled again in Greek style. I reckon its just easier checking on an atlas where Londonderry is. Definitely the UK unless history has changed recently.23 July 2015 at 12:33 pm #143459Fil MOss – you and I seem to be on the same wave length here. I also have little respect for the biggest benefit scroungers this country has!!Well, you’d spoil another couple. A match made in heaven? Fuck me!
23 July 2015 at 12:35 pm #143460Who would we have for President? Sepp Blatter, Len McCluskey, Griff? … come to think of it, might not be a bad idea – “GRIFF for PRESIDENT”I have never had political interest/ambition. I would probably have to start with a smaller campaign. Maybe Governer of The West Stand?

They are able to switch allegiance as well as long as they haven’t played a competitive senior game for one or the other – I think McClean represented NI up to U21 level before he switched over

Several sports also only have 1 team which covers the whole of Ireland.
