So according to most we had the best squad in the division. Who are you going to bring in, who are you going to clear out?

Start with the manager and put Barry Chuckle in instead and we wouldn’t see a dafter set up than yesterday. All this player business doesn’t matter a jot if he plays a team like he did yesterday.

Show me a player who doesn’t need confidence and right mind set to play a game of football, this fella doesn’t instil it with that shambles of a set up.

Leeds should be there for the taking if he gets it right but can’t see him changing his way to be honest, good time for a boycott.

You do realise the players are the team, don’t you?

I know everyone’s harking on about “NO FORWARD AGAIN ??” but if we can stop defending like an half pissed Sunday League team we just might beat the drop. We could have easily won 3 games out our last 10 1-0 if the team as a whole defended “as a team”.

Everytime a team attack regardless who they are I’m on pins waiting for a mistake. Perch on Saturday had no idea how to deal with the blonde lad rushin in on him everytime he was given the ball from Carson.

Boyce looked a shadow of himself resorting to the long punt up field rather than bringing the ball out.

I’ll say it and say it again !! 5 across the back , 3 centre halfs and stop leaking childish goals. Even without a forward and playing poor were still always likely to nick the odd goal here and there just like the Rotherham game.

I’m not harsed about pretty football just 3 points will do no matter how it comes but if we don’t sort the back line out nothing will stop us from going down.
We won’t stay up on goals scored that’s for sure, it will be goals not conceded 1 clean sheet in 10 just isn’t good enough.
Rotherham on the otherhand don’t score too many goals themselves. Before Saturday’s game the had only conceded 2 goals in their last 5 games with a couple of 0-0’s thrown in something we need to copy.

What would your set up be? Just interested to know.

As for bringing players in during the January window, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Who, of decent quality, will want to join a team who are second bottom, have a (according to the press) racist chairman, a racist sexist manager, low crowds, and a thrifty wage structure?

With regards to this thread topic do you really think sacking managers is the way to go? Three managers in less than one year, increasingly woeful performances under all three yet sacking managers is the solution to the problem?

This situation is reminiscent of the team Jewell inherited except back then there was the will, desire and finances to change things. Much more difficult to halt the slide on the way down with the money drying up. And of course we have the added problem, as SW said, of being perceived as a poorly supported, racist club who don’t pay very well. Do you think the club is in a position to gamble again on a 32 year-old forward on a £28k per week contract for three years?

This team is a mismatch of ageing players, cast-offs and those who are just not good enough. A major restructure is required. A difficult proposition for any club but a desperate one for Wigan Athletic.

To be fair Sammy, the lad has been here for 5 games now. How much longer does he actually need to sort thsi ou without being able to bring in any of his own players?

I see he has mentined again that Holt is due back on 1st Jan, so he obviously fancies giving him a go.

There shouldn’t even be a need to bring anyone in. I bet our relegation rivals must envy some of the players we have.
A world cup playing left back out on loan in Tenerife.
A proven goal scorer out on loan at Huddersfield.
One of the main stars in Scotland’s revival.
          A Welsh international youngster.
          Another world cup playing midfielder.
          A Danish international.
A right sided midfielder with so much natural talent.
          Scotland’s captain for years.
Even young Tavernier who can not get in our shambles would walk back in with open arms to the Rotherham side who out played us on Saturday.

I agree, Middlesbrough game apart, he has failed so far. Maybe his authority in the dressing room is being compromised because of the text messages and FA charge hanging over him which is why I believe he should never have been appointed in the first place.

Anyway, Whelan still has that no strings – money that is – get out clause written into his contract so depending on the FA outcome things may well change.

Its hard to work out managers. We easily matched Middlesbrough and at times outplayed them so why not set the side up like he did against Boro last Saturday, injuries allowing?
                That was crazy on Saturday.

I would suggest that we now need to win games and we don’t do that playing with McClean up top on his own and then resorting to 2 lads up there for the last 10 when we’re losing.

I have been advocating Riera and Delort but I doubt he’ll go with that. He may go Fortune on his own against Leeds, I’d prefer Riera with him up top at the very least, someone has to be on who can score.
You don’t get out of this with that luxury midfield so that needs breaking up. Part of me wants to pot Callum to the bench but there’s always that chance he can create something.
I think Kvist could be someone to get back in, just so the likes of McCann get forward.
I’m even considering Captain Calamity could be the answer at the back for some much needed experience of a dogfight. New lows reached.

Are Waghorn and Ramis ever coming back? They could be what keeps us up or takes us down imo.

The whole of me does. Apart from that run early on he did nothing.

Us armchair managers can opine all day long but no matter how you perm it at the moment, it is going to be very hard for anyone to squeeze points out of this squad. Rock bottom on morale, confidence and talent right now.

We can all speculate on here how the team should be set up and who should play.
Nothing wrong with that, it’s what this forum is for. However, we aren’t professional football managers – badges and all – and don’t see the players day in day out in training, which makes our views considerably less valid.

I don’t know what Mackay is trying to do either by playing McClean in the position he was on Saturday. Maybe Mackay thinks the options he has at his disposal aren’t any better and from what I’ve seen so far can’t argue with that. The thing is we are also giving daft goals away and the options at the back are equally disappointing. Barnett is embarrassingly poor, Boyce struggling and Ramis will only ever be a part-time player because of his injuries. I really can see Caldwell ever putting a Wigan shirt on again but even if he did he won’t be hitting the ground running. It a mess and I’m not sure whatever manager you bring in will fare any better with the players we’ve got.

Perch was the only player to come out with any credit from Saturday’s game. Him aside, to call our defence rickety is a massive understatement. I was sh*tting bricks when Boyce and Barnett were knocking it around at the back.

I still don’t think playing two up front is the answer – and certainly not if we’re playing four in midfield.

I can understand (in theory) why McClean is being started up front – because he will chase defenders down and pressurise them into mistakes or win the ball from them, and with his pace, if the ball is played through gaps in the middle or to his feet in space, he’ll out-sprint most defenders.

The problem on Saturday was, the midfield didn’t have enough of a grip on the game to create those chances, and half the balls played forwards were at McClean’s head.

Saying that though, I thought Fortune played well when he came on, and there was a marked improvement in the team.

                          I completely disagree.

Another manager would have us sailing up this league with this squad of players. It happens even to the worst teams, Brum were beaten by 8 one week under Clarke the week after they beat Watford, top of the league, under Rowett.

They’ve been completely negged out by the last couple of managers.

If we just sacked him now and got someone else we’d be mid table come May.
