Great away day again but that’s 7 – 0 in two games against a very poor team, Referee was shocking, Dunkley dropped for Kipre and two goals were down to him, Naismith !!! why was he playing, Cook got it wrong big time with those changes alone, but in central midfield we are lacking and have been for a while Latics owe me a refund .
11 August 2019 at 12:26 am #180273Very very poor performance.
With such exciting signings not at all the team selection we were expecting. I know new players need some time to bed in, but to pick same old same old was rather negative.
None of those on the pitch seemed to show any urgancy or desire, compared to PNE who were up for it.
Slow build up from the back with players seemingly unable to deal with the concept of turning.
Very very little won in midfield and certainly no second balls.
We need to have a lot more practice at receiving the ball and turning, or even heaven forbid reciving the ball side on and moving forward. Too much sideways, back, back ….
Defence pulled apart by simple passing movements that made NE look like Brazil when in fact they were rather poor themselves.
Keeper I’m afraid looks more dodgy than we’ve become used to, flapping a lot. No wonder he plays for Scotland.
Jacobs lost. Byrne way off his best. Robinson fast into space but no end product.
To be fair their keeper had a good game, and made a few good stops from the few rare shots on target.
Not many positives today except that hopefully, having an extra squad there, we can field a completely different 11 next week.
In true Roberto style also “we lost 4-0 last season, today was only 3-0”
I have always tried to support managers until the cause is lost (qv Joyce) but Cook does seem to lose his nerve about drafting in new players and trying something new.
Now is exactly the time he can get away with that.
If he’d brought in the new boys and we’d lost 3-0 we would have analysed who didn’t quite fit in, who needs to up their game.
By sticking to same old same old he has cast the critiicism on himself.
These are players we know. Why keep picking them?11 August 2019 at 12:30 am #180274Cooks not good enough, too many times bad choices and pishing around with a side when it’s not needed. I love the remark when he said “We played well near the end”. Come on Paul, must try harder to convince us that that had nothing to do with them been 3 up.
The IEC have backed him in the transfer window and I’m in the same view weve been clever in our purchases.
After that forget “weaning” them in , their not kids get them in right now. If we don’t improve our away form I honestly don’t think the IEC will faff around, he’ll be goneIf we had Neymar Messi and Mbappe he’d play them in a back 3.
Theres levels in football and Cook peaked in League One. Unless he was forced to do then I saw no reason to drop Dunkley, again, a mistake.Tactically he’s starting 11 was wrong and I think most of us agree on that especially in the crucial centre half position.
If he sticks to his word, whole sale changes are to be made. I just hope he means Saturday and not this Tuesday when all clubs change lineups anyway otherwise we’ll get cut to ribbons.
11 August 2019 at 1:42 am #180277We will be reet we won last week before a lot of signings came in so I suppose he couldn’t make too many changes. Let’s see his selection now after that performance and with the depth in squad we now have. We are Wigan.
11 August 2019 at 2:03 am #180278A rare occasion where we all agree, and can see where the problems are. But will the manager?
Not quite sure why he swapped Dunkley for Kipre, for the reasons others have stated. Charlie Mulgrew is going to be staking his claim for a place after today. Has to. And as soon as Sterling is match fit, I am sure Byrne will be out. I’ve never been a fan. Positional sense is shocking and doesnt overlap, opting to cut inside at every opportunity.
Centre mid…we are a player short. Do we need to play a defensive mid behind the two central mids? Like when we had Perkins bossing things a few seasons back? But then we cant play the system we are doing, as we have to take a player out of attacking midfield…maybe we shouldve replaced Pilkington with someone playing as CDM today. Morsy is ideal for it. Maybe that wouldve cut their passing lines and given the defence that bit more cover.
Cook can be his own worst enemy at times with his selections puzzling even the loyalist fan. When GARSWOODLATIC pulls apart a performance like he has done, and this is meant as a compliment, George, it shows that we got today badly, badly wrong.
But knowing us, we will beat Leeds next week. Thats the Championship for you.

Whilst clapping my hands with glee at our signings in the window, I also considered the fact that Paul Cook was indeed showing all his cards. I mean, if after spending around 12 million…and I have already argued with someone who said we hadnt spent anywhere near that…we have..if you add them all up and think the Sterling loan will be a million or so. They even argued that we hadnt spent 12 mil “because some money was from Grigg sale and Powell’s wages”…I know. I hope they never go into business thinking like that!
But if after all these signings we don’t shape up, questions will be asked by the owners.
Oh and GARSWOODLATIC, when you made the comment about Marshall, my dad said at last weeks game “Scottish goalkeepers are well known…for being crap”. He certainly looked crap when he fundled that shot away when Ralls ended up scoring. To be honest, if I was Jamie Jones, I would be very peeved, and looking to get away in January.
So we have a dodgy keeper and a shaky defence.11 August 2019 at 2:46 am #180280I will let those that did dissect todays heavy defeat. That statement didn’t last long. You’ve been all over this thread you started like a rash.
11 August 2019 at 2:58 am #180281The whole starting 11 need overhauling. For the first time in years we’ve pace both wide and up front with Moore Lowe and Enobakhare so let’s pray utilises them before Santa arrives.
Personally I dont think Cooks a risk taker he’s more of a percentage game, steady eddie type manager.I see Pilkington will be out for a while, I did mention this a while back about buying players who are injury prone and over the hill. I gave him my m.o.t.m against Cardiff but in his short time at Latics this will be his 2nd spell on the injury list something we can ill afford.
I personally think a more astute manager would utilise our now decent squad far better. He needs get that back 4 sorted for me Bryne and Kipre need to replaced pronto.11 August 2019 at 3:23 am #180282The whole starting 11 need overhauling. I see Pilkington is be out for a while, I did mention this a while back about buying players who are injury prone and over the hillPilkington has been as equally bad a signing as Walker, Cole, Lopes, Gibson and on and on but he was bargain basement and that’s what we sign. The eight million or so we have spent this time round is peanuts compared to some. Seems a lot for us but in reality we have signed bargain basement that nobody else was seriously after. Hopefully our signings work out and keep us up.
11 August 2019 at 12:02 pm #180286They might be “bargain basement” signings so to speak but in my eyes most have potential and some are clever loans and purchases. Look at Leicesters title winning squad compared to Utds Citys Chelsea’s that season. Us spending £10-£15million on a player wouldnt guarantee success. Flick back through our history and you’ll see its littered with us spending then, decent money on players that would struggle to hold their own in League Two nevermind in the Championship.
I looked at our starting 11 yesterday and my first words were, de ja vu.
It wasnt the loss, it was the manner of the defeat that sends alarm bells ringing.
Walker, Cole, Lopes, Gibson 3 of those played how many games ?. I would have liked to have seen more minutes on the pitch before making judgement on that.
Yep they might be sh1t but they were never given a chance. You only have to look at the way MacManaman was used to see something isn’t right.I personally think Moore and Lowe will be hits and William’s looks like he’ll
be a hit but only if a manager plays them to their strengths. The players are there within our squad, all at hand and if used right and we take a chance and fook to “weaning in” then a mid table spot should be easily achievable. I mean, why would you not throw some in considering that starting 11 yesterday was the basis of the same squad that nearly took us down. I remember the first 40 games not just the last half a dozen.
For me Cook never gets the balance right, I’ve a feeling 3 out the 4 back 4 wont start Saturday. At times it was defending at its worse.11 August 2019 at 12:59 pm #180289I will let those that did dissect todays heavy defeat.

Yawn. Bore off. Cheers
11 August 2019 at 1:31 pm #180290Didn’t go yesterday so only seen the goals. Kipre is getting a tonking on here and in general I agree that he puts the frighteners up me when he plays, but from the telly it was mcloud who was picking up for the first and between Robinson and fox for the second, not sure Kipre was at fault for either. Shocker of a result.
11 August 2019 at 1:52 pm #180291A superb performance last week followed by a joke of one yesterday. 8 new signings to integrate into squad mean we may have to be patient. Next week be tough too. Onwards and upwards.
11 August 2019 at 3:22 pm #180293Egg
Kipre is perhaps better than Dunkley on the ground, Dunkley is definitely better than Kipre in the air …..neither of them may be good enough at this level, both have a lot to prove
Naismith was decent (as he often is) rather than superb ?
We were shite …. on this we are in full agreement
11 August 2019 at 5:49 pm #180294By the looks and sounds of it a lot of people missed yesterday’s match. I did too because I’d promised to paint the kitchen.
So now whenever I go into my newly decorated kitchen I just know I’ll forever associate it with a 3-0 defeat to Preston.
