A winger and a striker who have scored almost 40 goals between them in the league just under ours are hardly not worth a punt. We wouldn’t be able to afford proven championship scorers given our budget and from what I’ve seen both look pretty decent with the right service. Could you perhaps mention some of the proven championship strikers we could have signed for 3 million? He’s a list from last season of top scorers who scored more than our new centre half Charlie Mulgrew. Take your pick but I’m pretty sure we couldn’t have afforded them.

Tammy Abraham (played for Chelsea today)
Billy Sharp (scored in prem yesterday)
Oli Mcburnie (sold for 20 million)
Dwight Gayle (West brom bid of 15 million turned down).
Jay Rodriguez (sold for 10 million)
Che Adams (sold for 15 million)
Lewis Grabban (cost 6 million)
Kemar Roofe (sold for 7 million)
Brit Assambolonga (cost 15 million)

Gotta agree with you big Roy, well said. At the end of the day it’s a business. Bringing in players on big wages ? not for me, DW let Bruce do that and it nearly sent us to the wall.
It wouldn’t have bothered me if we had er gone with Lang and some of the younger lads.
Cooks shittin it playing Lang, Weir or Gelhardt while Bolton played a side against Coventry that resembled a Youth Club side.
Millwall have signed 1 player, a keeper and they go to a Championship fav side and get a point. My point been, it’s down to the manager to get it right with what hes got at hand. Theyd all like Messi, Silva, Dyke, Kane but the truth of the matter is, we cant afford them and as the song goes that’s life.

No more excuses for me, Cook needs to gel these players and sharpish. He needs to stop been loyal to certain individuals and take a chance. Weaning players in ?, crock of sh1t that, they are players brought in to replace certain players that nearly took us down because some are simply not good enough for this League.

I looked at Gelhardt warming up and physically hes the spit of a young Wayne Rooney. I’m sure with 10-15 to go he’d give most of these ageing Chamionship defenders a fookin mare,

Not ready?, my fookin arse neither were the Bolton lads. Our young lads and the young loanees will be chomping at the bit after watching Saturdays shambles.

Brave up PC and lob them in you might just get a big surprise or you can stick with the likes Garner, Byrne, Kipre and the hot cold Windass and Jacobs and hope last year doesnt repeat itself.

People wetting their knickers over spending 7m on 2 strikers that have never played above league 1 level. If there was 7m to spend why waste it in that way? Relegation is nailed on i am afraid.

Oh please do kindly, fuck off.
Very nice. There is a thread currently going on this board asking where all the old posters have gone. Let me tell you categorically that it is YOU that is the reason nobody posts any more. What a scumbag way to respond.

JR no i am not just a Latics fan making a prediction. Is that allowed or should i say we are going to finish top just for the sake of saying it?

Otter if i was in that situation i would have gone for proven championship level players. I don’t think we are in the position to be taking big gambles like we have. Exciting as it is that money has been spent i don’t believe it has been done correctly. In the other areas i think it has been done well in defence etc but the absolute key area is up top and i just honestly don’t believe that Lowe and Moore will get enough at this level.

Anyway, first log on for years and after the warm welcome i got by VAT i will not bother again and head back over to Vital. The other thread was bemoaning the fact that there is no reasonable debate on here any more. Well i can offer that but it seems VAT and JR and people like that just want a closed shop. How do you expect people to come on here when you welcome them with vitriol.
You are clearly a lurking multi-poster, intent on stiring things.
Coming on here after 2 league games, one a good performance, the other a shambles and stating that relegation is “nailed on”, oh please!
And then having digs at me and Jrfatfan because of our responses. And claiming you are from Vital…I’ve never seen your name on there, ever.

Your post was aimed at getting a response and it got what it deserved. How can you be so negative after TWO bloody games. After 10 games, I may have considered your words more carefully, say, had we lost 7 out of the 10.
But I am not listening to such crap as nailed on relegation after a win and a defeat. Thats absolute bollocks.

Whatever your agenda is, leave it.

I think we have recruited very well. But its down to the manager to change things and make the changes to make us stronger. Its the manner of goals we are conceding. Out of the 5 so far conceded, only one was what you would call a class strike…Gallaghers on Saturday. The other 4 all came from bad defending and the inability to deal with a set piece or ball into our box.
Leadership in the team. We need more of it. You don’t have to wear an armband to be a leader…be a loud bastard who isn’t frightened of telling your team mates what to do on the pitch, even your skipper. I am all for the ’11 captains’ mentality. I can see Mulgrew in on Saturday, as neither Kipre or Dunkley instill me with much confidence. Byrne will be out, once Sterling is fit.

As for the young lads, yeah, I agree. We need to be a bit bolder with them. I bet Joffy (Gelherdt) would put the frighteners up a few defences in this league. We could end up with a Rooney moment where he cracks one in off the bar from 25 yards..I can see it. Its coming. My cousins lad played a year up in the academy and played alongside Joffy. 2 years ago my cousin raved about him “just like Rooney…so developed for his age”. Have you seen his physique? That lad has done some gym work. Nike don’t hand out 3 year boot deals to 17 year olds unless they have something. We need to see him integrated more. However, I can understand why he never came on against Cardiff, the game was on a real knife edge, not ideal for chucking him into. And at PNE the game was affectively over once they score that third. But when we have the right opportunity, we need to show some faith in Joffy, Lang, etc.

You would hope that us signing the players we have done would make a few who are already here look over the shoulders and think ‘need to shape myself here’, but that’s up to them. Quite rightly, anybody who doesnt shape up should be swapped and someone else given a chance. Again, I have to say I feel really sorry for Jamie Jones who hasnt put a foot wrong. For me, he should’ve started the season as our number one. I am not overly impressed with Marshall, that fumble against Cardiff was shocking. Is he being picked on past reputations and the fact he is an international? Jones shouldve been given a starting chance, and this shows a worrying trend of Cook. Picking players on reputations, rather than form. You shouldnt do that. Ever.

Time will tell what happens.

Gotta torally agree with you on that one. I think it’s different with keepers, its like no other position on the park and you kinda get a sense of what their about within the first couple of games and how they’ll shape up. For whatever reason, Marshall doesnt fill me with confidence.
Now if he’s sending that vibe out to me then how must the back four feel ?. Jones has done nothing wrong abit like MacManaman but Cook prefers to bypass Jones once again. That must be a sickener for Jones especially when you’ve play so well when called upon.

Were no Liverpol or Utd so I feel Jones should have been given the No1 jersey
and again, not many would disagree if he was bar Cook.

Another strange decision made by our manager and I’ve a feeling as the season unfolds theres gonna be fair few more mysterious eye popping selections coming our way.
I see Fox is now injured along with Pilkington both for the second time in their short time at Latics and were only 2 games in.

When signed I said both their injury CV’s read like War & Peace and been at the age they are it ain’t gonna get any better for them.

Both are decent players when fit. Sadly, they are injured far too often. I agree with the pair of you regarding Jones. A very good keeper who marshals (if you excuse the pun) his defence a lot better than what Marshall seems to do. But, in Marshall’s defence (if you pardon the pun again), is it a case of a new keeper having to get used to a defence he isnt too familiar with just yet??

Apparently Marshall was shaky to begin with at both Hull and Cardiff, but went on to be very impressive so a bit of leeway wouldn’t go amiss.

Marshall cannot be blamed for the atrocious defending….left for dead for 1st 2 goals. Watched Byrne against both Cardiff and Preston and does not look anywhere near championship standard. All over the pitch we were pathetic,so not fair to single individuals. All down to Cook now…..he has squad depth and options so needs to stop pissing around and blood the new signings……in their correct positions too !!!!

Both Fox and Pilkington, granted are very good experienced pro’s. Pilkington for me had his best game in a Wigan shirt against Cardiff.

But for them to make a difference they gave to be fit, something both have struggled with over recent years. To lose 2 players like these throughout the season and given the size of our squad could be a disaster.

I watched the game and agree with most comments. Wigan did not turn up. There is discontent within this team. Did not play as a team very disjointed.
When I read, before the game, that Cook believes in Kipre I could not believe it. He would have been out if I was in charge. BUT how can any defender have any confidence with a goalkeeper as erratic and hopeless as Marshall. Jones, As has been said, should be there.

I do not believe the owners will allow this situation to develop. I also believe Cook is in serious trouble.

The Royalls want their Everton favourite as manager.
