Your problem is you have such desperately low expectations for this club we could sink into the bottom three and you’d say, “Well, what more can we expect”.

This club has facilities the envy of many. Stadium facilities which haven’t been maximised since the purse strings started to be tightened. At least 10k empty seats in the home end, no attempts to bring in schools, youth groups, as in the old days of the JJ’s Club. Each season we’ve seen season tickets (relatively) drop off, the number of youngsters drop away, corporate boxes and sponsorship slashed. The club is slowly dying before our eyes because the previous ownership had been looking to sell ever since we failed to make it back to the PL before the parachute money ran out.

Away from the spotlight we have great training facilities and excellent youth teams throughout the age groups. If we don’t invest to at least Cat 2 status, something likely reliant on remaining in the Championship, many of our brightest prospects could to be lost for a pittance. Given the crazy transfer prices who knows how much some of those players could be worth if they continue to shine at U18 & U21 level.

No one is asking to gamble away our future chasing a PL dream. We need sensible investment to establish ourselves at this level. Because quite frankly, the footballing and commercial realities, demand it. If we think Cook can do it, back him.[/quote]

I agree entirely and I think most fans do, but we can only back him with what we have. Hopefully the new owners can make money out of the stadium which is now owned by the football club which technically it never was so any profits from that would have been hard to transfer to the football club aspect. With the 10,000 empty seats as you say we can’t be going round splashing out £15m on one player like some sides in this league will.

IEC must have known the situation re. crowds and finance before purchasing the club and they did come to take us a step further than DW could according to Dave so bearing in mind DW is such a wealthy man these lot must have plenty cash to take us forward. Bloody hell it took them a year to finalise evetything. They got us for peanuts so at some stage they must invest in the football if indeed they are to take us a step further.

DW spent plenty of his own personal cash on us. I’m not too sure that these guys will be willing to do that TBH. I know I certainly wouldn’t.

Well you may or may not be right, but if they aren’t willing to spend their cash, what do they expect will result from them taking that position ?…..other than failure and relegation (immediate or otherwise)

And begs the question “So what ARE they doing here, and what are their real plans and expectations?”

Well they have already said that they want to invest in youth and they may choose to spend some of IEC’s money but that is totally different to spending their own.

There’s a middle ground between the £10m-£15m per player the top teams spend and our current limit of £1m-£2m.

We need to look at signings who can establish us in the Championship and give us a decent return. Someone like James is probably out of our price range. But that sort of age range and potential is who we need to be looking at. You may need to pay £4m-£5m upfront, but could comfortably double your money, when they are ready to move on. Despite his slow start I actually think Windass is a smart signing. I don’t think he’ll ever make it at PL level but could see him doing the rounds in the Championship for the next decade. Even Championship regulars can command very good fee’s.

Longer-term we have to hope our youth system delivers so we’re less reliant on incomings. All of this demands IEC dip into their pockets…..but they have to be looking at a 5-10 year business plan. Something Whelan had when he first arrived, but absent in recent years, as he looked to sell.

I’m not been funny we’ve been on about the Academy since our Prem days. With the training facilities we should have at least 2 or 3 knocking on the door not skimmed out on loan to have lumps kicked out of them in the lower divisions.

And, I just hope it’s nothing more than a rumour that were actually taking a look at a young 20 year old centre half from Oldham’s Academy for a reported 400k-500k.
A bit of an embarrassment for our Academy I’d say.

In recent years we’ve brought through quite a few players who made it as a Pro at lower league level and in Scottish football. Lang’s the latest and we’ll have to see if he can step-up to the Championship. He seems to have done OK at Oldham. But the big hopes, the ones who are international regulars at their age group, are all 18 or under. Of course we still need to see them given an opportunity.

He’s been screwed around in different positions, different formations, all of which has coincided with our drop in form. If only we’d stuck with our tried and tested formation and put Windass in the No.10 position when Powell was injured. Maybe by now he’d have formed a decent relationship with Grigg. As it is both are in and out of the team and we’re playing long ball to Garner!

Then again you can say the same about plenty areas of the team. Not least how the Kipre/Dunkley partnership was broken up. Or shoehorning Burn into a full-back slot when last years player of the season was sat on the bench.

Agree, take the Blackburn game. Powell comes off early doors so we then start hitting Blackburn with the long diagonal ball into space so Windass can run in behind and aiming it to Vaughan to nod on and it worked perfectly, basically cutting out our non ball playing midfield. Long ball ? , I don’t give a feck as long as we win.

So the week after what does he do against Bolton ?, drops Vaughan and brings in Grigg which obviously didn’t work.
So the next week after that ? Brings Vaughan back in, my point been, no consistency so why the hell tinker with a winning side ?. It basically sends out the wrong message to certain players that, if you play really well then your position is not safe.

My point been, it worked so well against a far better side in Blackburn then surely it was worth giving it another go against a poor Bolton side then if it doesn’t work then bring Grigg on.

To me Cooks problem is he doesn’t have a style of play were players come in and know the job their suppose to do. It’s a case of, he’s missing so we’ll change the style of play and formation which leads to nothing bar confusion for players and fans alike and a total lack of consistancy. We can’t build a side around Powell when so much as an ankle tap can bring him to the touchline. I’ve lost count how many times the physio has carried him around the pitch and I’ve said that’s him out for a few weeks only for him to be coming back on 5 minutes later.

I think we are between a rock and a hard place this time. We know jack shit about these men and their intentions and same with our chairman and his dad. Are they committed, serious and passionate about our club. Cookie has his faults we all know he has but until IEC show us their worth then Cookie is the only one at senior management level who we know actually cares about Wigan Athletic. Normally I would probably be wanting change by now as selections and tactics are baffling at times. I have even started to think if we have maybe had offers for Grigg and Macca and that’s why they ain’t getting enough game time. Maybe I’m being too cynical but I’m worried that if Cookie goes after losing Uncle Dave and Sharpey all who had Latics blood coursing through their veins we will be left to people who don’t give a toss. This is the greatest club in the World to support but guys we are entering a whole new era which we are uncertain about until our owners show us we can trust them. They can do this now by investing in the club a little this month.

I have a feeling these new owners have other things in mind as well as rugby and football. Don’t be surprised if we get the odd pop concert like our scuffy fcukin neighbors up the road. I think the new owners see our stadium as a foot in the door for holding events in the UK especially with the rugby on a Friday when the season ends in the summer

I can see it NOW, Rugby on a Friday, Monster Truck hosted by Rick Flair on a Saturday and our game moved to a Sunday, wellies and goggles provided. This January will give us a clue as to what the future holds for our club. there’s only 4 options:-

                            1) Stick with Cook and back him in the transfer window
                            2) Stick with Cook and give him nothing and prey he keeps us up
                            3) Sack Cook and hope a new manager can turn it around with no funds
                            4) Sack Cook and give the new manager funds to hopefully keep us up

I would prefer a change in management and back the new guy with funds simply because the players body language says it all.

The body language would have more to do with our run than anything to do with Cook IMO. We look fine until that first goal goes in and then we seem to fall apart. Even at Swansea we seemed to collapse when they made it 2-1.
