Here you go…..
Decide for yourselves
Clarke Stats:
2003-2007 Wolves/Kidderminster/QPR/Plymouth…….goal every 6.5 games
2007-2010 Sheff Wed/Oldham/Southend……………….goal every 3.5 games
2010-2011 QPR/Preston……………………………….goal every 19 games
2011-2012 Swindon/Chesterfield………………………..goal every 1.7 games
2012-2013 Charlton/Crawley/Scunthorpe/Coventry….goal every 2.25 games
2014-2015 Wolves/Wigan………………………………..goal every 7.5 games
2015-2016 Bury…………………………………………..goal every 2.1 games
2016-2019 Sheff U/Wigan………………………………..goal every 2.9 games257 Championship games, 59 goals = goal every 4.3 games
Grigg Stats:
2008-2013 Walsall…………………………………………goal every 3.9 games
2013-2014 Brentford……………………………………..goal every 9 games
2014-2015 MK Dons………………………………………goal every 2.27 games
2015-2019 Wigan………………………………………….goal every 2.21 games26 Championship games, 10 goals = goal every 4.6 games
Other than a blip of a season (2 for Clarke) not a bad record for either of them.
Should Griggs games played have read 46.
Both good strikers, but with different styles. Lone striker role doesn’t suit Grigg and I’m sure if he got better service he’d score more, great finisher.
Yes -sorry, typo. Have amended. But Grigg always stated that he preferred to play as the lone striker.

He also scored 20+ goals playing in that role for MK Dons playing as a lone striker. He scored 20+ goals playing in that role for us in his 1st season at Latics. He scored 20ish goals for us last season playing in that position.I’d say the fact that he’s not had such a prolific rate in the Championship is more to do with where his ability level is than the position he’s been played in. There’s a reason why Brentford got rid of him when they got to that level, why he wasn’t prolific (even before injuries) for Latics in our last visit to this division, why Cook preferred others to him this season and why O’Neill doesn’t often start (or even pick him) at international level
There’s also the argument that perhaps it was those providing the service to him that weren’t good enough to step up to the Championship – hence why the manager opted for more combative types of striker when the likes of Jacobs, Massey and Powell were injured.
Either way, it’s all academic now.6 February 2019 at 2:17 pm #176076Cookie for me has exasperated the topic with his insane quote about Grigg and Powell, Massey and Jacobs. However much I wanted Will to stay the transfer has gone through and he is no more. We move on and have 3 massive games to save our championship spot. Rotherham away then the games against Ipswich and Bolton. 7 points from these should see the job done and if Clark nets a few in these games the 4 mill for Grigg will feel more like 10 million. Lets move on guys and hope our away form turns at the weekend.COYL.
6 February 2019 at 5:53 pm #176083How’s about weve been dog shit….and Aguero would get 5 goals a season with the non league standard of service we’ve supplied this season. Seriously preferring Clarke to Grigg …..really ???….Nearly as big a load of bollocks as the quote “Powell is the best player in this league”…..of course he is .Bet he’s aged a bit since we last saw him..Would love him to get a decent run in the team but with his fitness. nah.!…get him off the wage bill..That’ll upset the Powell groupies. Why do you still persist with this view regarding Will Grigg?
He’s had one and a half seasons in the Championship both with us. Brentford didn’t think it was worth the gamble and was prepared to sell him on and neither did MK Dons, although I accept that may have been a financial decision.
So, one and a half seasons in the Championship during which his goal scoring record is at best, questionable.
Of course having better players around him would increase his chances but he’s also up against better defenders so one sort of cancels the other out. Are you really suggesting the club should go out and spend a fortune on other players who can better the “non league standard of service” (rolls eyes in disbelief) he’s getting now just so an unproven player at this level might score a few more goals?
By all accounts the club weren’t in any rush to sell him to Sunderland but £4m for a player who has only performed in League One is good business by any stretch of the imagination.
And what makes you think everybody else, professional football people, have got it wrong but you are right?
6 February 2019 at 7:57 pm #176086Should Sunderland achieve promotion let’s see how he does next season with the right support……I think we may be revisiting this thread !!! ..Yes the money was good……no he shouldn’t have bench warmed ,neither should Macmanaman. Finally anyone who had permanent wood over Clarke after our laboured defeat of a Qpr side who could have got a draw…..need a reality check. We were bottom 5 standard and I fear these next 3 winnable games may through a spanner in the post Grigg orgasmic trance, sour grapes state some are in….

Tyldesley, you’ve totally ignored where this discussion was going and harped on about league 1 stats…
My comment referred to the Championship, and his first time in the Championship for us coincided with a terrible set up, in fact a mess of a team so hardly surprising his goal tally was low.
when did Grigg say he prefers to play up front alone?
IMO, considering the way we play Grigg hasn’t got the physical attributes to play the lone striker role in this league. As I said, if he’s given the service then I’d say he could hold his own in this league.
Mad how some fans now imply he is sh ! te & good riddance?? :pinch:

I’d agree that the team the last time we were up was a mess & undoutedly had an effect on Grigg’s performances (as did the birth of his kid & an injury) & to be honest from what I’ve seen (as someone who lives 230 miles away & relies on highlights, live games & feeds) this season it hasn’t been too great either (team performance wise). I also accept that those players that he’s been able to feed off in Lge1 also struggle at a higher level so therefore he looks more exposed
For the record I’ve read & heard numerous interviews from Grigg where he has stated his best position is as a lone striker including one where he says that it was only when MK Dons switched to that system that he started banging the goals in although he has also stated that he thinks the “in the hole” role suits him too
Personally, and this isn’t something I’m just saying after the event, I have always said that I wasn’t sure that Grigg that the bit extra to be a great success in the Championship even going as far back as that first season with us. I always struggled to explain exactly why but he just seemed to lack that extra bit of pace & strength and there were times when it felt like he needed several chances before he’d get a goal & he’d find those chances harder to come by at a higher level
Maybe Grigg is wrong & he’s better suited to being part of a partnership. Maybe Michael O’Neill is wrong and he deserves to be starting every game at international level. Maybe Brentford were wrong & should have gone with him in the Championship when they went up & maybe now Cook is wrong & should have been playing him in stead of Garner/Vaughan/Clarke.
Or maybe, just maybe all these professional football coaches, managers etc.. are right
13 February 2019 at 1:59 am #176234Missed two sitters tonight against Cesspool.
13 February 2019 at 2:21 am #176238Never mind. Accrington Stanley up next!
13 February 2019 at 2:39 am #176239Watched the game and couldn’t believe when he missed the target after rounding the keeper. Was wanting him to get off the mark as confidence can play havoc if you don’t get off the mark early. The mackems were booing at half time and full time, things getting nervy at the SOL.

What a journey!16 February 2019 at 4:11 am #176354Another blank and a few chances squandered. Grigg not being able to breach the likes of Blackpool and Accy Stanley at home must be worrying for Ross and Griggs himself. As usual he put in a good shift and looked head and shoulders above that donkey Wyke who he partnered in attack.
The January window is looking like a mare for the mackems.
What do you think Mutty? From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!16 February 2019 at 10:19 am #176355What do you think Mutty?Once he gets that first, he’ll score bucketloads. As you saw, we create chances-a-plenty, and the only reason we haven’t been humping sides is that our strikers have been wasteful (even 20-goal Josh Maja).
That said, the sitter he missed on Tuesday wont have done his confidence any good, and he desperately needs a tap-in to get off the mark.
Personally, I’d have kept Maja and let him leave in the summer for free. Sure, it would have cost us the £3.5m we got from Bordeaux, but it would have meant our search for a replacement could have been extended over May-July rather than a panic purchase on 31 Jan. The replacement may well have still been Grigg, but I’m sure the cost would have been much less come summertime and another 5 months warming his arse on the DW bench.
