How long before “Cup Winning Bob” does to Everton what he did to the Latics?
But this is a Latics Board! Wouldn’t it be better to discuss this on an Everton board?
Tick tock.
How long before they get over “Cup Winning Bob”?
Tick tock.
I could understand the reason for bringing on Holt and rearranging the team. Wigan badly needed two goals, and Blackburn’s centre-half had been sent off.
McClean as a left-footed left-winger would be able to cross for Holt. Blackburn only had Rhodes upfront, so Beausejour could go forward as a left-footed left-back.
It was harder to understand the original lineup, although Wigan still have a significant injury list which restricts Coyle’s choice. And all except Rogne had started on Thursday night against Maribor.
After the Watford game, I feared that our luck had run out. We did take three valuable points but, as Wellington said at Waterloo, it was the nearest run thing you ever saw.
Not sure that I’d swap Beausejour for McClean.
McClean can only use his left foot, loses the ball far too often, and takes no defensive responsibility.
Remedied by substitution after an hour but, strangely, it made little difference to play. But it did make a difference to the result which is all that matters at the end of the day
Scoring chances from open play were hard to come by before the substitution. And, despite the overwhelming possession, the play remained ineffective in producing scoring chances after the substitution.
Granted, it did produce several corners. Holt is a force at corners – especially when the opposing centre half has been sent off. Wigan forced five corners in succession, scoring from the fifth.
The result may be all that mattered to you today. But Wigan will have to find a way to create chances from open play, and it will be harder to create them against teams with eleven men.
But we got three hard-earned points today. Well done! Now we’ve got a very demanding run of seven games in three weeks to get through. It could well determine what we achieve this season.
The sending off scuppered their attacking play, so not really a game to judge him.I thought he worked hard chasing the big hoof and his goal scoring record this season is not to be sniffed at.
He is a lot taller than I expected and he headed a few balls on under the challenge of both Rogne and Barnett.Congratulations – you’ve done it.
A well-reasoned post!
Why has the EPL finished my friend? I’ve got fek all wrong yet! ;)There’s a long way to go and I will still put my money on Everton not making the top 6.
Any road, why should I let it go just because you says so??. I’ll post what I want sunbeam and and you can do the same. I’ll look forward to posting many more anti- Martinez / Everton comments, so I suppose I might as well get used to you telling me to let it go. :P
You’ve got it wrong already – your prediction was that Everton would finish in the bottom four, not just outside the top six.
You can continue with your obsession about Martinez as long as you like. But do try to get your facts right.
Assuming Fortune is not fit, my guess for the team is;Carson (played in 2/2 games)
Boyce 1 Barnett 2 Rogne 1 Perch 2
Watson 2 Gomez 2 McArthur 2 Beausejour 1
Powell 2 McClean 1Difficult choices for Coyle;
Defence; Bovce 1/Shotton 2
Forward; McClean 1/McManaman 1I don’t know how Espinoza 0/2 fits into Coyle’s plans. If the team needs more energy, surely he will come on at some stage.
Not a bad guess – but I’m still puzzled about Espinoza.
Oh dear, foot…mouth….great poachers goal from the big man. Is there any other players that you are not looking forward to them returning? We may be on to a good winning formula here. ;)Yes, it’s an excellent tactic to play against a team with only ten men.
However, you got it wrong once again – Holt didn’t score. But he is a threat at corners and free kicks, especially when the opposing centre half has been sent off.
It’s open play that I’m worried about. Even with overwhelming possession against ten men, Wigan found it difficult to create chances from open play, whether or not Holt was on the field.
But there is something I’m looking forward to – a well-reasoned post from you. You know you can do it.
Well done. Three points and very hard won.
Men Wigan 11 Blackburn 10
Possession Wigan 71% Blackburn 29%
Shots on target Wigan 6 Blackburn 2
Goals from open play Wigan 0 Blackburn 0
Corners Wigan 15 Blackburn 3
Goals from free kicks/corners Wigan 2 Blackburn 1Creating openings was clearly a problem today. Coyne was getting furious, kicking water bottles all over the place. The Wigan team is still something of a work in progress.
Puzzling; right-footed left back who always had to come inside and left-footed right winger who always had to come inside. Remedied by substitution after an hour but, strangely, it made little difference to play.
By tea time tonight, I reckon they’ll sink to seventh position. That’s their good run over. Some people would rather see Everton lose than Wigan win.
How long before “Bottom Four Bob” takes Everton to the wrong end of the table?
Sorry, Bobby haters, it won’t be this weekend.
Wigan gave their best performance of the season against Nottingham Forest. A fluid formation was led by Fortune, supported by Maloney and McCarthy. And Beausejour played instead of Crainey.
Although we won’t see that same team again, it does provide a model for the future. I’m not particularly looking forward to the return of Holt. He hasn’t been either dominant or mobile when he has played. Also, there has been an inclination to boot the ball upfield in his general direction, in effect giving the ball away.
We do desperately need a recognised forward and some clearer tactics. We need three points today too. Wigan stand fifteen points behind Burnley with three games in hand. Three wins and nine points would take them into sixth place, just above Blackpool.
Wigan have got a demanding programme, certainly until the start of the New Year and beyond it if we are successful in the Europa League and the FA Cup. It will become increasingly difficult to catch up with the league leaders if the gap becomes any bigger.
Yip he beat a big club today but be prepared for him drawing against the likes of Cardiff, West Brom, Norwich and struggle to beat Stevenage in the cup…..oh he already has done??, come on lad if you heard the commentary on 5 live coming home from Leicester, Chelsea should have been 6 nil up at half time. tock fekin tick. :PPost after past about Martinez. You just can’t let go, can you?
You thought – and wished – that he would take Everton into the bottom four. Instead, he’s nearer to the top four.
You couldn’t have got it more wrong!
Congratulations! You know as much about Rugby League as you do about football.
And I don’t mean you, Mutty.
Rodney Marsh, Paul Merson or Stan Collymore, Do any of them know anything about football ?So players don’t know anything about football.
Managers – obviously – don’t know anything about football.
Fellow fans and posters don’t know anything about football.
That leaves only one person who does know about football – and that’s you!
