    Would anyone actually miss it?

i suspect that a number of our non-playing staff would miss it most

and whatsmore seemingly giving up without any fight and seeing a club that has spent its whole exsistance battling for recognition giving up with barely a whimper that is a disgrace.

would you not agree that from the villa game onwards there has been a marked improvement in fight and attacking ambition?

and, in respect of the defence – it was quoted during the commentary that prior to last night’s game only man united had conceded fewer away goals than wigan this season so it can’t be all that bad

in reply to: A lot better tonight #56989
I thought the team played well tonight the defence was great and the attacking was a welcome relief from the previous home games

    Side note

Some tics fans think we are real madrid

I agree, far more positive display
some signs of fight, determination, and attacking intention, starting with the 2 mc’s
i fairly enjoyed it, particularly the first half, and was encouraged overall despite the defeat

    …as WAFC own the stadium.

I think I am right in saying that, despite saying that he was going to sign it over to the football club ‘within 8 weeks’ at the start of last season, DW himself (or one of his companies) owns the stadium and WAFC and WRLFC both pay him rent.

Andyc,Bobbys been told 6 months ago by DW to adopt a more pragmatic style of football to keep us in the Premier League,i’ll quote Bobs reply!.
Football is a matter of opinions, but I’m very stubborn in my ways.I’m very clear in what I want to do and the way I want to play and I will never change !

There is nothing wrong as such with the way that RM wants to play.

My point is that whilst we always play the RM way we do it differently in some games or at least some parts of some games than in others.

No-one could complain about our style of play against Liverpool, Arsenal, or particularly in the first half away at Wolves.

The difference is that in the games mentioned we have played the RM way but have done so in a more positive manner than we have done in others.

What we need is for the positive RM stuff (which is great when it is happening), including getting more players forward quickly and taking a few more risks, to be encouraged and the side to side safety first RM stuff to be discouraged.

Maybe someone ought to write him (or perhaps Jimmy Saville) a letter …

What we need is a new manager who doesnt talk shoite and trys to put spin on the rubbish HIS team have served up again,19 goals scored says it all, martinez said last week the lack of goals does not worry him, well it should do because if you dont score you dont win games and all season we have struggled to score and win matches they both go hand in hand. MARTINEZ OUT :P

what we arguably need is someone (my guess is that it would have to be DW) to encourage/instruct RM to encourage/instruct his players to play in the more positive manner in which we know that they can do even within the current ‘style’, and in fact have done very effectively at times this season (liverpool, arsenal, wolves (twice), stoke, newcastle, birmingham, wba)

we need our midfield players, having received a pass from a defender, to be more inclined to turn with the ball and head in a forward direction instead of the first instinct being to pass it back to whence it came just to be safe

at a higher lever people like modric and our old boy palacios did this well for spurs on sunday; at more-of-our-level, danny murphy did it well for fulham on saturday

    Ts&Cs

The ‘prize’ does not include travel to and from Stamford Bridge

as i recall (without any references so open to error) …

the previous round included 1-1 away at blackpool (still one of my most favourite away trips)

and a brilliant replay at springfield at which the turnstiles couldn’t cope with the crowd and the kick off was delayed

the game at northwich (when the copper got darted) only got abandoned when we were 3-0 up
    – lots of stockport fans turning up for a bit or argy-bargy

when we played it again it was 2-2
    – stockport turned up again

before the replay we already knew that we would be playing chelsea and then everton in the next 2 rounds if we got through so about 10,000+ turned up for a crabby 1-0 (possibly) extra time win in very very cold temperatures despite which none of our players wear gloves or tights or any of those snoodle things

Bury many years ago, when their half-time equivalent of “cross bar challenge” was to have a kid dribble the ball from the half way line and score in an open goal.

For some unknown reason they decided to let him come towards our end. He must have been no more than 6.

He sets off – takes about half an hour kicking the ball every two foot or so, gets near the goal, takes a kick and watches it go past the post.

Did we sympathise with the poor enthusiastic little mite? No – whole away following sang “You’re sh*t, and you know you are…”

He’s probably in Strangeways now for some violent crime caused by his traumatic childhood :o

I think that was actually at Preston (not Bury) and it was Tom Finney’s grandson who was about 4 at the time, poor lad (but very funny)
I seem to recall that we got beat about 3-0 – “the good old days”?!

    You sure we’d get one?

at least alcaraz got the first goal

unfortunately, if we play as we can do that may be getting close to a scoreline prediction :(

    Duke,

I share your general sentiment. In a way it would be good to apply for relegation to the bottom division and to start again.

However, the supposition behind that is that we would ‘automatically’ enjoy more success and therefore it would be better than the current situation where we only win about 1 in 5 or 6.

I suspect that the years from 1995 onwards (the Whelan years) could never be repeated. Many other clubs have tried to do what we did and have failed.

When you refer to the club losing some of the heart and soul, what you are really referring to is the fact that we don’t win as many as we used to so it is naturally less enjoyable going to the games.

“we had an amazing atmosphere and chemistry between fans all the way through Jewell’s reign in charge, and we haven’t come too close to replicating that ever since he left”
Historically, other than the odd big cup game or for the odd promotion-type games, the Wigan crowd have never generated an ‘amazing atmosphere’ – anybody who says that the atmosphere at Springfield Park was usually anything other than quiet has a very selective memory. As I recall, going back to around 1981/1982 Larry Lloyd even commented on this despite it being a promotion period.
As ever, the atmosphere (and chemistry between fans) improved when we started winning more games under Jewell and the glory hunters were pacified. When we were initially poor under Jewell and latterly also very poor, the atmosphere at the games was as bad as it always has been (Jewell commented in this more than once) and the chemistry between fans was just as it is now – largely moaning buggers. The Sheff United game was of course a one-off situation.
I would argue that the effort put in nowadays by the ES2 lot surpasses any previous efforts at generating a consistently good atmosphere at games, yet their attempts to improve things are met with disapproval from many of the ‘old boys’.

In a different front, I’m afraid that no-one will ever play for us because they love the club and what is around them. We are and always have been a stepping-stone club. None of the local boys like Peter Atherton, Kevin Langley, Alan Johnston (who we lost to Lincoln!), etc., have ever declared that their love for the club was so great that they didn’t want to move on to bigger and better things. The only bunch of players who would be truly proud to pull on the blue & white would be a supporters’ club team and I suspect that the novelty of watching Steady Nigel week in and week out would soon wear off (no offence intended).

I think that a question worth considering is – would we enjoy being very mediocre back in the 4th division (or whatever it is called) any more than we enjoy being very mediocre in the Premier League?

Do we need to count our blessings for what we already have?
Whilst we all know that there was some nice easy grazing to be had whilst up and around the brow of the hill, was the grass in fact any greener on the previous side after all?

We all have our own views and expectations.

Maybe we could each be a little more tolerant and moan a little less?
And maybe we could each take a little responsibility ourselves (as the ES2 lot do, of which I am not one) and consider how we might be able to contribute towards helping to improve our support, our own enjoyment and possibly the standing of our club in our current league?
