Nothing to do with the captain. It should be pre-determined by the manager and coaching staff who will take penalties. Only if that person has been substituted, sent off or reduced to a jibbering wreck by something strange, need that decision change.

I refer the honourable gentleman to the bit in my first post:

“Who gets the team message from the club to the playing staff?”

Call me old fashioned but that should be the Captain.

    in reply to: Penalty.. #134551
I understand that point, but the fact is though that you need to have the bottle to take a penalty. It’s just that sort of situation.

Let’s say that in training Marc Antoine-Fortune scores every time he takes one yet put him in a match environment and he misses every time because he always falls for the mind games of the goalkeeper or lets the crowd noise get to him (see the England football team). Technically he could be the best penalty taker we have but simply may not want to take it.

The captain or whoever saying ‘Marc is taking it because he scores every time in training’ is absolutely no use whatsoever.

Yes if say Shaun Maloney (or another known penalty taker) is on and Tavernier decides he is taking it then the Captain should say sorry but Shaun is our penalty taker end of (which I’ve seen happen), but if there is no stand out candidate which obviously there isn’t then whoever “fancies it” as they say is far better equipped to take it than whoever the Captain decides.

I think you are over focusing on the penalty situation and not looking at the broader aspect of what I posted earlier. I agree with your analogy about Marc knocking them in for fun then not having it at the game – but in that scenario he wouldn’t put himself forward to take one – would he? What I’m saying is that the Captain should take a look at who has made themselves available, in that situation, and take the decision and not let someone just get on with it because he has the ball and has the bottle – he should weigh up all his options (indeed a good leader would never force a team member to do something outside of his/her comfort zone – that’s leadership). As I said earlier, I saw others motioning their willingness to take that penalty but no, Tavs had the ball and no-one made the leadership call.

Now then, back to what I was saying earlier – what we lack on the field, in my opinion, is someone who has those qualities to encourage, motivate, guide and lead on the field – as well as take the tough decisions on who takes a penalty or a free kick. Mixing and matching the Captain on a game-by-game basis is not sending out the right message to the players who should look to a leader for inspiration and leadership on the pitch.

    That was my point

For me it’s easy. It is (and I know this sounds corny) that Family Club Feeling I have whenever I’m there. I still see the old sweats who trudged through the turnstiles of Springfield Park – with their grandkids now. There might only be 10,000 but I feel as if I know every one of them. There is no nowtiness with the young (on-the-whole) as I’ve seen many a time young lads having the craic with elders in the queues. I now feel that we have a generation, coming through, who completely get it and wouldn’t have it any other way.

I agree with the sentiment of those who did support other teams in their formative years as this may have been the only way of actually getting to a match – times were bleedin tough then. I’m doing my bit to keep the interest going but if that stops then – what the hell, I’ll still be there God Willing.

This is not as funny as some people make it out to be, indeed I feel it highlights a very important problem within the team. That is one of leadership.

Yes, we do have Boyce (as the longest serving team member) to fill the regular slot but who really is the Captain out there? Who motivates the team? Who has the bottle to encourage (bollock) fellow team members who are not pulling their weight? Who gets the team message from the club to the playing staff? Who has the charisma to lead, guide and motivate?

Oh! and who should decide who takes the feckin penalties instead of “I touched the ball first, it’s mine” attitude? The Captain/Leader should be the one.

    Leadership

What has leadership got to do with taking a penalty? You either have the balls/ability to take one or you don’t. The captain telling you to take it even though you hate the pressure is hardly going to inspire you to hit the back of the net is it?
Just because you have the ‘bottle’ to take one does not mean you are best served to do so – that is a rubbish argument. To answer your question about ‘what has leadership got to do with it?’ – It takes a leader to sort out who wants to take it first of all (not the childish grabbing the ball and not letting anyone else get a look in) – I’m sure, as I have seen before on not only penalties but also free kicks, the infighting going on on-field on who gets to take it, there are others just as/more than capable.

Was letting a young defender who has had limited game time recently the best decision – “just because he had the bottle” – from where I was sitting there were a couple of others wanting to step up-to-the mark but no “I’ve got the ball so it’s mine”. Is that the sign of a good leader?

Get it sorted out – the Captain/Leader should know who has the balls/ability and sort it on the pitch – if it transpired that it was only Tavs that wanted it then so be it – but don’t give me this “if you’ve got the bottle” shit.

Espinoza starts. We win. Sound familiar? Hardly a coincidence the energy that man brings.

    Make the most of it.

Game plan was to press them all over the pitch – it seems to have worked. Roger with his energy would be perfect for those tactics.

It’ll be all change on Saturday – unless the tactics remain the same of course. B)
Not being funny but if we were pressing them all over the pitch then we can’t give Roger sole credit for doing ALL of that. Didn’t see the game so it’s hard to comment but, I’m simply not having that that headless chicken was the reason we won yesterday.
What is all this shit? Who put the cross in for McLean to score the first goal eh?

Get a grip man and watch the damn thing before spouting shit about a player who put a very decent shift in yesterday.

Ignoring the fact that that must be a wind-up, I was only thinking last night (having not seen the game) that it was hardly a coincidence that Huys started yesterday and we win. I think that was probably more of a factor than Roger’s headless chicken nonsense.

Oh, and we went back to 1 up front, too.
And you didn’t see the game? I did and we didn’t.

in reply to: As Fans We Need To Do Our Bit! #134409

If we continue to hemorrhage fans at the rate they disappeared last Tuesday then we will soon certainly have the room to carry out such a manoeuvre

in reply to: ROSLER OUT! #134278

There is one player who would have made a difference on Saturday and should be the first name on the team sheet.

    Martyn Waghorn

Not sure why he not getting a game when you look at the options available.
That’s a good shout, is he not injured? Especially as Rosler picked him as his young player of the year at the end of season do.

He does seem to be making some very strange team selections.
I too thought he should have been our third sub at the Brentford game with the view to a starting slot tonight.

    in reply to: Roger #134277

    Hmmmm, homesick?

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, no great loss

[waits for the kick and rush, headless chicken brigade to burst into hysterical tears]

I’m a fan of Espinoza but I don’t see it as a great loss.
I think he’s OK, nothing more, nothng less. Quite why he became the next great hope, and the answer to all our ills, I just don’t know.

Actually, I do. It’s because he ran about a lot, sometimes quite fast, and kicked things. Wiganers like that.
Occasionally he showed that something special. His debut at Stoke for example I thought he was excellent. Then others he was just as you say “a headless chicken”
Yep, one chicken doesn’t make a summer
Nope – but it made my Blackburn game.

After 52yrs watching Latics i never thought that i would lose that tingly feeling, from
about two days before the match. But things are looking dire and it is becoming difficult to watch and get excited about looking round at others it seems a lot more have lost the tingle. Please Please Latics give us our tingle back. :( :( :(

You do know that you can get tablets for that at your age – I’m fortunate enough to still have my tingle, even at my age.

I find that positive thinking, a happy disposition, a sense of realism and belief keeps my tingle going – and long may it continue.

in reply to: ROSLER OUT! #134204
Puts out an attacking line up and we didn’t attack. One shot saved from Maloney 1st half and same 2nd I seem to remember. The long haired lad on the wing tortured us and the blonde haired lad in the middle looked a hundred times better than Forshaw.

Is it players, manager, tactics? I’m not sure anymore and when that’s the case you normally see a new man come in and sort it. Moyes absolutely banker material and lives locally.

I still think we can get in the play offs comfortably with this squad.

Oh, and to pick on Riera and Delort is daft. Neither of them should be being asked to play this way. There’s a potential partnership there and Delort is keen as mustard judging by how much he wanted to take a free kick in the 2nd half when Maloney pulled rank.

Agreed. With a little bit more confidence and perseverance we will be alright.

The crowd, also, have their part to play and I expect nothing less than rousing chanting, throughout, at Tuesdays game – young drummer boy needs to earn his crust.

in reply to: ROSLER OUT! #134189

Now I am confused. I get the ‘Rosler Out’ sentiment – it was a poor performance, but can anyone please just remind me how much these players are paid and do we have a case of the ‘tail wagging the dog’? If this is so then who is the instigator(s)? I might be wrong and Rosler may, indeed, be shite but when you pay someone an obscene amount of money week in, week out then you would at least expect them to have the mentality/work ethic to follow instruction – at least until their contracts are ready for renewal. I’ve worked for some right tossers over the years but I’ve never deliberately gone out of my way to undermine them or the organisation that put food on my table – am I just being old fashioned?

Oh! I’ve also noticed a few on here (even on this thread) and on other forums slating the signings that have been made and how they are not up to the rigors of this very tough league – but wasn’t it not that long ago that quite a few people were preaching to all and sundry that “we have the best team in the league – on paper?

My head hurts – time for an early night.
