Well Derek, I think Sean has adopted the Roberto philosophy.
In other words, we go onto the pitch to protect the point that we share before a ball is even kicked; then we “grow into the game” and see if we can “nick it”.
We don’t appear to have a plan B when we come up against very direct teams and our beautiful passing game just sends us into ever decreasing circles.
I much preferred the Paul Jewel era, when we often attacked from the outset, got a couple in front and then tried to shut up shop. PJ was rarely defensive and it was only Liverpool and Man Utd when he “bricked it” and tried to keep the score down.
Modern football is generally boring across the board and its all down to the ruination through greedy big money clubs. Levelling up is needed
We’ve only been selected for TV viewing because the Beeb are hoping we get humiliated !
Hope Sean plays his strongest line-up.Well, it could be a fairy tail ending:
Shaun Maloney brings on Cal Mac in the dying minutes of the play off final and Cal rifles one into the back of the Bolton Net to secure promotion
Bloody marvellous stuff this Italian Salento Red
Poor starting line up from SM.
I agree with you CW.
Need to be more cut and thrust.
Really want Shaun to succeed.
He needs to watch the vids from our Paul Jewell era !I always remember an interview with Bill Shankly and his number two Bob Paisley. They insisted on playing “their way” and letting the opposition worry about them. In this day and age it’s far too much analysis of the opposition and about stopping them scoring. The football was far more exciting in the 70s, 80s, 90s; now it’s gone far too analytical that it’s more boring than accountancy. Me and HORC can remember coming off games in the Paul Jewell era and feeling exhausted, as if we’d actually been on the pitch for 90 mins. Now, we rarely leap out of our seats, unless we need the Gents !
Real football is dead ! Football has been ruined by Sky, greed, VAR, etc. Can’t add much to all the comments above
But forget this one up front stuff and put two big strikers in and around the opposition box with at least one effective winger than can swap from left to right wings during the game !
The foul on Smith was the one for me. It wasn’t even contentious ,the ref was right near it how could he not give a free kick. Instead of us having a goal scoring opportunity they went up the other end and scored. It’s kind of acceptable when a ref is equally as bad for both sides but this fella was like a twelfth man for them. Hope someone can compile some of the poor decision highlights and send it to the EFL. On second thoughts maybe not they will only thank him for a job well done !
Very valid points CW
Foooo kin stinks !
How do we beat these bar stewards ?
I hope the club have got this as evidence !
You’re right Italia,
Just watched it yet again; and the Ref is half a pitch behind play.
The more I watch it, the more ludicrous it gets !When I watch it again, Charlie is clearly one pace ahead of Cole and first to the ball. Cole knew what he was doing by falling over so easily. Not even a yellow IMO.
Unlike their player who is clearly behind Humphreys and just lunges at his feet and is nowhere near the ball.Very poor refereeing has robbed us of at least a point !
Well beating the “best team in the World”, apparently; with four champagne goals deserves a little something special. So I’ve blown the dust off my last Jeroboam (contains 4 standard bottles) and watched each goal again.
Now Chianti, is also a great choice; especially since after that fourth goal hit the net it really did silence the Bolton crowd like the lambs. Very apt; you are learning well, grasshopper.
I agree with you CW.
If you look at last nights game, the Carlisle goal started when Matty Smith lost possession in the middle of the park. However, can’t be too harsh on the lad because he had a lot of possession & involvement; probably more in one game than Edwards had in any collective 90 mins. I’m sure that Matty will look at the replay and be disappointed with himself but be big enough to learn from his experience. Likewise Babba Adeeko, made a few small mistakes but then went on to create the chance for Charlie.
Overall can’t grumble, now let’s get stuck into them Horwich cow yeads !We are well away from the finished article, but there were some notable performances today.
I thought that every single player made a great contribution to get the result over the line. Here are a few comments and observations, but don’t be offended if I have missed anyone.Sam Tickle: put your tenner on Sam playing for England one day. Only real mistake was their goal, but more than made up for it with the rest of his performance.
Shaun Clare: shakey first twenty minutes then grew into the game. Liked his penetrating runs from defence to start a number of attacks.
Charlie Hughes: looks like he has been playing for 20 years; so calm and confident in his own ability. Charlie might join Sam in a future England line up !
Liam Morrison: workman like performance and can’t remember any mistakes.
Tom Pearce: welcome back from the wilderness. One of the best left footed crossers that I have seen in a Wigan Team since 1968.
Matt Smith: as you would expect from an Arsenal youngster. A calm footballing brain in possession. The sort that will give me the jitters until we have seen him week in and week out.
Scotty Smith: good engine room, prepared to get stuck in and clinical passing. Should become a fans favourite.
Steven Humphrys: great energy and strength. Once he scores, he will go from strength to strength.
Callum Lang: always like Callum, but hope the Captaincy doesn’t distract him from his normal game. Think he was carrying an injury today, but still put in a good shift.
Thelo Asgaard: looked menacing today and had the Cobblers worried. Keep it up.
Charlie Wyke: ground out 100 mins today, so every credit. He deserved a goal at the end, but the post just beat him.
Kell Watts: welcome back Kell and good to see you on the pitch.
Callum McManaman: All time legend, and I think he will have a very valuable contribution to a long season. Brilliant goal today, showing good craft and determination.
Chris Sze: reminds me of a young Mike Newell and hope he proves to be as good.
Baba Adeeko: first saw him at Accrington about two seasons ago. Good strong lad; another one that I’m tipping for a great career.Enjoyed my day today, thanks to Shaun & the Boys !
