Gary Neville in his role as a ‘football expert’ on Sky stated that he went to a football coaching seminar recently and the way forward was that the top European clubs will be playing 2 at the back with 8 going forward – so a 2 – 8 system
He then stated that Wigan Athletic had been playing the system for sometime !!
Hats off to Bobby then
Looked like we played with two defenders last night. ;)
The problem isn’t the passing game. The problems are not putting chances away and making silly mistakes at the back. Some of the silly mistakes that happen come from the over exaggerated passing at the back though. Caldwell and Figs in the last three games. I like the way we play with the qualification that we overpass it for passing sake sometimes.
In the second half last night, especially when Nathan Dyer came on, it was clear that they were pressing us with great effect and that in some instances passing across our box would be almost suicidal but we still did.
I’ve said before it’s a fine line because some of the passing at the back has created space that has led to great goals but there has to be some common sense as regards when to push your luck and when to realise its best to not take very risky passes on.
Some of the players new they had a mare last night and booing just makes things worse.
Has anybody else thought that the way RM has our defence set up coupled with the play it out from the back tactics that it has put more strain on our defenders and added to our injury problems ?I doubt it in terms of Ramis and Alcaraz because they’ve hardly touched the ball this season. Maybe with the likes of Beasajour and Figs with them having to get up and down the pitch a lot. The philosophy should help them really, in that, if we retain position there are less tackles to make and less overall defending.
I know the reality is much different though.
Well it may come as a relief for some on here to know that with Moyes odds on to take over at United Bobby is odds on with some bookmakers to take over at Everton. Strange how all these clubs want this Manager who cant organise a defence and is tactically out of his depth as i keep reading on here. The thing is we won’t know in the scheme of things how good he is until he does manage a club with more resources. I do rate Martinez and he has made great strides for our club but until he tests himself out at the likes of Everton we will not know for sure. Problem is for him a lot of other clubs and supporters won’t give him the time to build his team and his way of playing.
He left Swansea in a similar position, in that he sets the club and playing style excellently and they have reaped the rewards of the structure he left in place. It doesn’t worry me losing Martinez if we find someone who can carry on this work but I’m not delusional enough to know that this is a massive IF!
I hope to God that they can find it in themselves to wear their shirts with pride on Saturday and at least put in a decent shift. Saturday has no place for sentiment, we learned that last time we contested a major final. Roll your sleeves up lads and get fuckin stuck in ! :)That’s Bob’s team talk sorted for Saturday then.
I thought Roger had a half decent game considering he was slightly out of position. None of the glaring errors were his and he scored a cracking goal.
The thing is, for me, we don’t seem to learn from our basic errors. I can understand if the other team is just too good and our defence is not fast enough or outclassed. However, that second goal for them last night where Caldwell gave the ball away was absolutely criminal.
It wasn’t down to lack of match fitness or lack of pace or experience. Knowing you are 2-1 up and knowing what a huge game it is, even then, we try to pass our way out of trouble.
I can’t think of any other team in the world, bar possibly Barcelona, that would be in a situation where a player is about three yards away and you are the last defender, in the position that we were in, that wouldn’t put their foot through the ball.
There is playing out from the back and then there is suicide. It isn’t about decision making, it is now ingrained that we must pass out from defence no matter what the situation.
Swansea pressed the ball hard in the second half and we couldn’t cope and didn’t have a plan b and for me this has been the same all season.
£45 because I had the £40 ones for the semi final and now I am only two rows behind where I was sat then, and now those tickets are £65.
£20 difference for two rows?
To be fair, they quite literally have to draw the line somewhere.
I could understand if that was on a tier system but £20 is a bit steep for the slight difference in view. They’ve got you by the bollocks basically.
If I had to I would have paid a lot more but I don’t think you get the value on the extra amount you pay.
Plus I don’t want to end up next to the prawn butty brigade west standers ;)

Its funny, I remember my brother taking me in 1981 when I was 6. I can remember walking up the steps to the terraces and thinking it was like going to the World cup I was that excited.
Think there will be a lot of welling up come kick off Saturday.
Business end of season. Please let it be Newcastle!
I dont give a flying fook, who it is has long its not us. ;)
I know it is a bit greedy but the look on Pardew’s face would be priceless.

I went to the stadium yesterday to see if i could change my seats for the final as i have a few mates going and we want to sit together – was told that the £65 tickets sold out bar the odd seat.On the way back to my car i was approached by a City fan asking me to buy him 2 tickets for the final as the club would not sell to him – bet you could guess my response
Would it have been ” Yes…..that will be £200 please”.
