Interesting observation there Phoenix, but I respectfully disagree. There are several places that have both superleague and football league clubs (Hull, Leeds, Huddersfield, Salford and Wigan), but there’s only two where more folk watch the rugby year on year than the football (Salford & Wigan). Salford have only been a league club for about 3 years and their ground holds 5,000. I looked at Horc’s post re average attendances:
Our average attendance this season 12,210.
This is our highest annual attendance for 8 years
2023 our average was 12210 (R)
2022 our average was 10371 (P)
2021 (Covid)
2020 our average was 10,592 (R)
2019 our average was 11,663 –
2018 our average was 9,152 (P)
2017 our average was 11,772 (R)
2016 our average was 9,467 (P)
2015 our average was 12882 (R)Excluding 2020 & 2021, when superleague was under covid restrictions for attendances, would it surprise you that in 6 of the 7 seasons listed, the average attendance was higher for the rugby?
2022 – 12280 (12210)
2019 – 11015 (10371)
2018 – 11479 (11663 – the only one lower)
2017 – 13189 (9152)
2016 – 13636 (11772)
2015 – 13911 (9467)
2014 – 14101 (12282)You still need a couple of old heads in and around the place as long as they have the right attitude and a level of fitness that allows them to make an effective contribution.
Sunderland have Danny Batth and Corry Evans, both of whom have exactly the right attitude on and off the pitch to act as role models for the youngsters. Evans was very front & centre in the community when the covid vaccinations started, and Batth was seriously missed at the back end of last season to marshal a makeshift defence of which he was the only one playing in pa familiar position.
From what I read about Caulker, he was very critical of the previous ownership and would probably be a good role model off the pitch. I dont recall many of you raving about his on-field performances though, so it would be a case of whether he could add anything to that area.
Muttty , I hope there’s someone to keep you safe and sane .. after that nailbiting ‘ victory ha ha ha ha ha last night .. in front of a packed 45.60% crowd
I’ll re-visit this post after next Saturday. Here’s hoping the worlds most watched sport will draw more than a tin-pot northern sport only played along a motorway linking two counties does.
Imagine the embarrassment if it didnt.
Cracking value at £120,000 in wages per goal scored.
No favouritism please Mr Danson.
Its called “Living within your means”. No more stupid wages for mediocre knackers. The piss taking party is over.
If Hollywood FC want to pay stupid wages for a 34 year old whose legs have gone then more fool them. Once their owners have got bored with their toy, it will all come crashing down, just as it has done twice in Wigan.
An interesting bit of Wigan Sporting Company business. Latics lose another player and the money pit black hole is slightly smaller and bring in a small transfer fee while last week the Warriors sign Tyler Dupree from Salford which was Salfords record fee received and in return Brad Singleton moved the other way.
Edited for accuracy.
that the ONLY two attendance figures for the gobshites to be publicly and immediately declared
Just for the record – Last nights attendance was also publicly and immediately declared.
The cost of ticket and travel will be more on Saturday at £20 than it would for Bolton at £34. And those are adult prices – the coffin dodgers get in cheaper – and can get to Bolton for free on the bus.
What is interesting is that 3 days before kick-off, there’s still no chairman or chief exec in place. Who’s running the show, or is it his other Chief Exec helping out?
Maybe Italia could apply for the job, then he could implement his truth.
Keep enjoying “your truth” fellas. I’ll leave you two crazy guys to outdo each other with utter bullshit.
but, where were the missing 11000 for a ‘Borough ‘ clash , between C Cup finalists and the greatest team ever in THE WORLDS MOST FANTASTIC GAME ??
Same place as the missing 11000 for the PNE game last season and the Bolton game the season before.
All the official attendance figures (bar two away games) are published here:
https://www.wiganwarriors.com/fixtures
I really dont get your point. Are you suggesting that the attendances are inflated so the warriors have to pay 20% more in VAT than they actually need to?
You do realise that season ticket holders are always included in attendance figures for eligible games as the figure is for how many tickets have been sold, not how many turn up. This applies to football as well.
15k for a game live on free to air TV was a pretty good turn out IMHO, even if a couple of hundred ST holders couldnt make it, and Leigh didnt come close to filling the North stand. Compares very favourably with the 15429 (4729 away) for the visit of PNE on 30 July 2022.
and no recent cup success for either of them
Breaking News: Wigan Warriors are the current challenge cup holders after beating Huddersfield in May 2022.
3 days of mourning declared in Schowes ‘n Whelley ..
Is that for the Whelley slappa that was shagging a married man?
Ok – didnt realise you had signed Aiden McGeady to put them on a plate for him.
Charlie Wyke to be L1 top goalscorer 33-1 on skybet. Perhaps worth a tenner to buy your season ticket with next year if you are that confident?
