Its because Griff they have no ideas to answer (just like Jewell and Bruce) the dilemma that as a club we are punching far above our weight…
However Roberto Martinez has clearly sat down and put in place the sort of long term plans that can allow us to compete with teams that make more revenue in pie sales than we do in gate receipts.
Currently we have had two of our wingers from the development squad go out and make a very good impression in the Championship…
It wasnt too long ago one of our hottest prospects on the lips of Wigan fans was none other than Magno Viera who although is doing very well at Fleetwood Town I hear …. is a good representation of how far we have come when you compare him to the likes of Dicko and Cruyff’s grandson ( please refer to youtube video for indication of his ability )
Spain and Barcelona are a mile away in standard from England and any other English club and probably will be for the forseeable future.
How did they acheive it?
Through long term planning from grass root level.
Exactly what Martinez is trying to do.
Of course Wiganers are generally thought of to be 20 years behind the rest of the world so this creates a bit of a pickle for the likes of Hindley who just cant understand why we cant just lob the pigskin into the box and hope for the best….
Fair enough we’ve took a few punches along the way but we are by no means out for the count!
And to call Martinez a failure when he has kept the club for last 2 seasons without a striker who cannot hit the fucking back of the net like all strikers should do is insane and surely only strengthens the fact that tactically we are very strong.
As said previously in another thread if Martinez had the money that Bruce was spending on an average season we could easily afford Defoe or a simlilar striker of his quality…
Perhaps Whelan should get his hands in his pockets eh the tight ol’ sod ?

My suspicion is 99% of the so called “darksiders” would do a dissapearing act if we started plummeting through the leagues so they can pick a new team to bitch and moan about….

Ok Salford I’ll spell it out for you as your obviously struggling. Just say for instance we played with 2 strikers the law of averages say’s your doubling your chance of a goal, right??? Now I’m not saying a change in system would turn us into world beaters but we may just improve and lets be honest it can’t work worse than the current one. Bob has been trying this system for 3 seasons now and we are still no closer to getting it right. although I would never admit it I thought we were down last season and for all the anxiousness that piled within me come end of the season it all was worth it! Until Gomez roles his sleaves up and puts in a shift which is never he would never play for me. He does keep posession but does feck all with it square or backwards passing is not what we need, IMO we looked far better when he went off.

The site was down for a while or at least my lap top said it was ! When I was able to log in I posted several comments and even wrote a fairly long match report on the reserve game I had been to but today I see all have gone !!! What a waste of time that was !!:P

you cant polish a turd.our players are not good enough to do what he (martinez) wants them to do.
they are not comfortable on the ball, we have defenders who are not very good at defending, and strikers who cant hit the target. myself and everyone else can see what he wants them to do, but they are not good enough to do it..and if we do manage to groom a couple of players to be any good, they will get taken by bigger clubs.
thats why we were more succesful under jewell and bruce..they bought players to do a job, and they did it.
if we want to be like bilbao, us as fans are gonna have to be VERY VERY patient..stick with martinez and let him have 7-8 years of learning the whole club how to play this way, from the kids to the first team, and be prepared for a few ups and downs, and let him get on with it, without pressure.
it wont happen though, its not the english way, he will be forced out by the fans, or he will walk.
thing is, which way do we want it?
are we prepared to wait, and let him doin his job and support him unconditionally?
or do we want a change, try to stay in the premier league?
sorry to pick at a little part of what you said sanctuary but I don’t get why people seem to think bruce was a sucessfull for us? He had half a good season in his full season in charge and after that we were dire.
I believe if he hadn’t of gone to Sunderland Tesco would be relegated by now…
Despite us having poor outcomes in a lot of games there hasn’t been many matches where we haven’t dominated a period of the game chalk back to the first 20 min of Swansea that some were calling the worst performance ever!
All in all sometimes under Jewell Hutchings and Bruce the team was out of ideas and we pushed our luck to the limit!
If only we could keep the spells of domination up for 90 minutes….
