I got the impression from this site that all the fat & ugly folk in Wigan watched t’rugby.

No, at the rugby they are just fatter and uglier.

Anybody else think that £5m sounds a bit steep for a striker that spent his first season with the team that ended up bottom of the division, and who is now playing Div 2 football?

(Mind you he did play for my fave Argey team River Plate, so must have summat about him)

(And I suppose we did buy Heskey for £5m-ish from relegated Birmingham after a season where he scored less than Ruben did for Rec Huelva)

Hang on a minute, half the folk who post on here have been whinging that Martinez and Whelan are not spending enough money!

Remember that Valencia was playing for Villarreal reserves when we signed him, and he didn’t turn out too badly.

Didnt yse any of them, Google Translate only lets you put in 300 letters and i never even knew there was one on wiganer.net ;)

Copy and paste this onto a dozen different translation sites, and you’ll get a dozen different translations. So you are saying that you translated this without web assistance, and got exactly the same translation as Google, and as someone on another site, by pure coincidence?

The simple answer is, I don’t know if McDonald or Boyd will be good enough in the Premier League. I’ve seen Boyd live several times, but never McDonald, so I can’t judge.

What I do know is that Boyd is a more prolific scorer than McDonald, and he is also a big lad who can hold the ball up. McDonald is not. He is more of the Kenny Miller ilk, and it’s not the sort of player you’d want to be leading the line. Would you have Owen or Defoe as your single front man?

If we sign him, who would make way? Would we play 4-4-2 with Rodallega and McDonald up front, or if we play with a single target man and two wide men cutting in, do we play McDonald on the left with Rodallega up front? Or McDonald up front (who is smaller, and considerably less of a presence than Rodallega)?

If we didn’t have Rodallega, I think he’d be a great signing. Can’t see us signing him to put on the bench though, so who knows what Martinez’s plan is.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am not criticising Martinez. He knows more than me, and obviously has a plan. I just can’t see us running out the season with the four strikers.

    Absolutely Micky, but…

The whole point of my original post was, would we keep all four strikers – if we got the two we are linked with.

Scott McDonald is not a million miles away from what we already have with Hugo Rodallega, so what does he offer?

Are there a lot of people on here with height issues?

in reply to: Martinez and Whelan #19285

    maybe not Boyd then…http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/8472745.stm

The Boyd deal was laid to rest when we signed Caldwell.

The argument was about size of player, not who they played for.

But you brought up the fact that Arsenal put four past Bolton, with a team of short blokes. Is that a reflection on the height of the players, or the ability of Arsenal?

i came across them last night. it brought it all back to me,the track is eye am the sky not eye in the sky.i remember them been on granada tv on some concert series in the early 90’s and they use them 60,s style blob lighting things on a screen behind them.i am jealous standish as i wish i had seen them but with the singer doing life that is not going to happen

I wouldn’t be jealous Bob, because at the time they either hadn’t been signed, or hadn’t actually recorded anything. I just remember them being incredibly noisy, with a tall dread-locked scouse frontman.

It was a great venue, The Leadmill. Saw Primal Scream in 1991 when they were a thrash band. Good times….

I watched Arsenal score 4 past Noblot the other night and there was nobody above 5 foot five playing out of the back four.

Maybe so, but they are Arsenal not Wigan.

Saying that, Martinez knows better than me, because that’s why he does what he does, and I don’t. We’re trying to play passing football, so perhaps it could work without a big bloke as a target man to hold the ball up.

At this stage however, I can’t see what McDonald would offer that Rodallega can’t.

did you get my youtube links phil?,dr phibes and the house of wax equations and the track eye in the sky which i would post up if i knew how is space rock.shame the singer had to bump his mother of hence the band ending.still a good band back in the day.

Fook me Bob. No way did I think I would ever see the name Dr Phibes on this website!

I saw them at the Leadmill in Sheffield when I was a student there in the late eighties. Absolute quality.

As you are correctly insinuating, Defoe is also small, and so is Michael Owen. The question is why buy another small striker when we generally play one up front as a target-man? Or, if we go to 4-4-2, we’d end up with two dwarfs up front.

The SPL is a pub league, where you can look a world beater with an ounce of pace or guile. My point is, if he was a great finisher but had a bit of size about him, I’d be delighted with him joining us. Unfortunately, a player like that is Kris Boyd and he isn’t interested in Wigan.

For what it’s worth Fil, they sound like the Velvet Underground to me, a band which I am very fond of.

    Canvey Island??

And apologies to all for resurrecting that one.

Isn’t Canvey Island Wigan Atheltic’s equivalent of Vietnam?

Whilst he has a prolific goalscoring record he’s only 5’8″ and whilst Artiz is 6′ 0″ if what I read is right he’s 11stone 9lbs, with no premiership experience it could take them a while to settle in. Although we would have 4 strikers, they would all be light weights, I think the club could do with at least one striker with prem experience who is a bit meatier and not easily pushed off the ball, e.g. Jason Roberts or James Beattie.

Agree with you 100%. I’d have Beattie or Roberts – but think there’s little chance we’ll have either.

McDonald is a proven goalscorer in the SPL, but he is tiny.

It’s starting to make me think that the Scotland loan rumours could be true, or perhaps it’s a safety net in case there’s a last minute bid for Rodallega that can’t be resisted.
