I wonder what the crowds were when he scored those goals?

Not that good. The games clashed with Rugby League World Cup qualifying matches.

Grant Holt’s goals kept Huddersfield in the 2nd division – maybe he’s worth voting for.

    What, all two of them?

So enlighten us to what you think Barrow’s role is?

I’ve certainly seen him stood alongside all those managers quoted, pointing and confabbing. If he’s having no input to the team and tactics, then get him sat in the stands and stop paying him whatever salary he’s on.

I’d suggest he’s there as a sounding board on matchdays and during the week he coaches as per the manager’s instructions.

Simply- he’s a coach. Doesn’t have the stress of the manager. Does as he’s told. Gets paid.

    The manager makes the decisions.

Otherwise, are you suggesting that under Martinez he was part of the possession-at-all-costs tactics coaching staff, but when the other managers came in he suddenly advised them to hoof it long, only to go back to the Martinez way of playing when Caldwell got the job?

To me it suggests he’s either had very little input, but is now advising Caldwell, or he still has very little input and it’s all Caldwell’s decision to go back to passing style.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to put a load of smiley faces in my post ;) :cheer:  :pinch: :silly:

So why did Coyle, Rosler Mackay and now Caldwell not bring in their own support staff which at every other club is standard?. And why did players arrive in the summer not play and go out on loan the next window?. There are simply too many oddities in what has gone on this season for it just to be down to bad managers. Managers who came with good reputations and have watched their careers crash and burn at Wigan. Two respected managers who between them could not win a home game since August and who both stuck with a forward who never scores and who had an integral part in both of them losing their jobs. Nothing makes any sense at all unless you bring in the outside interference factor. Many mistakes have been made from all departments of the club and after the end of last season everything was in place for us to push for promotion but we have imploded in spectacular fashion and unless the real root of the problem is found we will struggle again next season.

Yes they did. Coyle brought in Sandy Stewart and Mackay brought in David Kerslake.

Only Rosler didn’t bring anyone in, and funnily enough, he did much better than the other two – for the first half season a least.

Caldwell can’t bring anyone in because he’s never been a manager before.

And picking up on what you’ve said: which two managers came with good reputations? Rosler – to an extend, yes, I’ll give you that, and personally I think he may have pulled it round.

Coyle? Please don’t say Mackay had a good reputation! (in football terms, he did a decent job at Cardiff, but prior to that he wasn’t great)

We did fine in the second half of last season, but I think it was a bit of knee-jerk reaction with Rosler and then Whelan in his wisdom appointed Mackay, and decided he was going to defend him.

And that’s where the slippery slope got slippier and slopier.

We could start next season with

    Carson

    Tavernier Kiernan Pearce Taylor-Sinclair

    Perch McCann Huws McClean

    Holt McKay

Subs Taylor Cowie Riera Waghorn Barnett

Could these lot keep us in League 1? Could they get us promoted? If not why did we expect them to get us promoted and why were they signed in the first place?

I very much doubt Holt, McClean, Perch, Riera, or Carson will be playing in Division 1.

We were paying more than what we could afford??? How could we afford his wages 4 months earlier when we signed him? He was signed then on this seasons pay structure.

If only it was that simple eh?

With a great second half to last season and high expectations, they backed Rosler financially, with the aim of getting back into the Premier League.

But as it all started to go tits-up, attendances dropped, hospitality sales trailed off, Whelan appointed Mackay and spouted his nonsense to the press, sponsors pulled out, new sponsors u-turned etc

Then add to that the realistic possibility of a drop into Division 1 leaving a big hole in finances.

Players had to go to prepare for the worst, and anyone sellable was sold.

Both McKay and Caldwell had chances to throw caution to the wind and swap things round particularly up front and neither did.Ultimately no forward threat has cost us all season long and Caldwell fell foul of it himself in his 2 games .I would prefer an experienced manager but I hoped he would have had the nuts to drop the waste up front and go for the juglar but nope same lame team as Friday. All possession and thats all.It just puts the turd on top of the cake in what has been a comedy season.Don’t think Caldwell has endeared himself to some of us, me definately not

The manager here is little more than a figurehead coz we simply refuse to move away from Robby Martinez’s blueprint for the club. No it is not Bob’s fault ,he has moved on but why else is that fucking prick Barrow still at the club and why does it appear that 5 different managers have had basically the same ideas?. Does the manager even have a say in who comes to the club?. Delort and Riera arrive and are not picked by Rosler then McKay and the Liverpool wonderkisd come in only for Malky not to pick them. Whether you rate Fortune or not it simply does not work with him yet he is fireproof. It is only my opinion and yes I’m hurting like hell as everyone is but we will never improve until we can employ a manager who can bring in his own support team and we get fucking shut of Bobby’s sidekicks. Im utterly fed up.
Barrow’s the only Martinez ‘sidekick’ there.

And I’m not entirely sure how much imput he’s had over the past couple of years.

The mere fact that Caldwell has got the team playing on the ground and back to a possession based style would suggest Barrow has had little input in the tactics under Coyle, Rosler, or Mackay.

Looks like we r back to the old loads of ball but doing nothing with it

    And you’re a winner!!!!!!

I wondered when that one would surface, and after two games you didn’t disappoint.

And if a quality striker and winger had been signed last season sort of like Rhodes and a decent winger sort of like Adomah we would have won automatic promotion but we bought Fortune and McClean instead.

The problem is, there aren’t many ‘sort of Rhodes’ strikers around.

Chose any one and ask the same question What the bloody hell is going on at Wigan Athletic?

We can’t afford the wages could be an option a wage bill quoted by the chairman of £20 plus million is unsustainable on the crowds we get
Bournemouth and Brentford haven’t done too badly with lower attendances and no parachute payments.
What’s that got to do with it?!

We were paying more than we could afford, so players had to go.

Bournemouth and Brentford perhaps pay their players less, but they have better managers.

(Although Bournemouth are owned by extremely wealthy Russians)

in reply to: Adam Forshaw #141291
Seemed pretty shit for us but may have been OK if picked consistently in a steady team. Doing pretty well with a regular place in the side at a club pushing for promotion to the Premier League. Not good enough for us though.

Not sure what you’re getting at there.

He wasn’t sold becuase he was deemed not good enough.

But many people who posted on this forum however, did say he wasn’t good enough.

in reply to: could be worse….. #141290
Would the French 2nd Division the same as our Div1 ?. Time one certain striker to be dragged back and prove his so called worth

We probably can’t afford his wages now.

in reply to: Sporting Thuggery #141287
I take it all those who called for Ben Flower to be executed last October will do likewise after that awful bit of thuggery from Martin Waghorn last night.

6 month ban at least please….

(On the bright side, a six month ban will mean Fortune will get a chance to bang some goals in against the likes of Bury, Rochdale, Walsall and Port Vale)

As far as I’m aware Waghorn didn’t hit someone, then hit them again when they were out cold on the floor.

    Poor comparison really.

That’s a fair observation Garswood, and to put the record straight (SW), for me, I wasn’t having a go or ‘bashing’ Black I was merely pointing out that the support role that these two have had over the previous years hasn’t worked and it was time to see a whole change in management personnel. There is a lot to be said about managers who, when appointed, want to bring in their own staff, as there is already an understanding of methodology, clear lines of communication, training etc and I don’t think that keeping these two on the pay roll has helped any of the previous 3 managers, whatever anyone thinks of their (managers) competencies. I think it was a decision based on finance (possibly to offset costs of the appointments) and, dare I say, misplaced loyalty. Whatever the reasons behind all of this over the years (which we will never know about for sure) it has been a factor in where we now find ourselves, in my opinion of course.

My comment wasn’t really aimed at anyone in particular, it just that Black’s name seems to have cropped up time and time again when people are criticising or questioning the abilities of the backroom staff.

As I said earlier, I can understand people having a pop at Barrow* but I can’t really see what Black’s done wrong. I think in this case however, both Black and Barrow’s influence should help Caldwell as he’s new and doesn’t have any assistants to bring in with him into the job.

I’m actually looking forward to see how Caldwell does. He’s played under some good managers who like to play football rather than hoofing it upfield aimlessly.
Jonny, your last line is quite ironic! ha ha ha ;)
Eh? You’ll have to expain as I haven’t a clue what you’re on about!
Caldwell used to regularly hoof the ball upfield usually straight into the West Stand!
But that’s different. They were his attempts at a diagonal ball, and were down to poor execution rather than an instruction to lump it as high and as far forwards as you can – which seems to have been the norm since relegation.

He also used to hit some pretty decent diagonal balls as far as I can remember.
