Genius! So without Whelan investment we would have got to Prem? Would have taken a fair run of luck at Springfield Park under Kenyon like but with guile and good management I see no reason why we couldn’t have got there!
Our best chance to have achieved this would have occurred had we have kept together our Freight Rover winning team. Alas, we were struggling financially, so had to sell off our prize assets. If that team had have stuck together, I believe it could have gone onto great things.
That was my all time favourite team, fabulous to watch but couldn’t get 4000 to come. And people still moaned “bloody rubbish Newell, Langley, Cook, Kelly”
And no prizes for guessing who the ones were for shouting bloody rubbish Newell, Langley, Kelly, Cook – Jees not him again!!

I’m a relative newbee to WAFC and I’d appreciate it if you could all stop saying how wonderful the old days were! As far as I’m concerned you are all looking through rose tinted spectacles. The last 8 years have been the best I’ve seen at the club, ever. What now? Well as things are, it’s good news as it feels as if things can only get better so we are in the ascendancy to euphoria. Crustie has even been referred to by some idiotic clown down in London who purports to be running the country whilst denying his unwavering sexual appetite. That is an accolade. Not an ostrich in sight.

Give it another 20 – 30 years & you too will be reminiscing & living in the olden days.

Hahaha! Yes, you’re right; as you probably know I’ve only been enjoying myself at WAFC for about 8 – 9 years. First game in the sun v Middlesborough, I think we won 1 – 0 and I think Sibierski scored.

9 October 2019 at 3:40 pm #181296For me the years since coming out of the Premier League have been the most fun I can remember, it just costs an arm and a leg now compared to the 80’s. And my drinking has increased!
9 October 2019 at 3:59 pm #181297Enjoyed the recent league 1 games the most, yes we were winning most games but I just like the lower leagues venues and fans the most, would I want to return there no I f in wouldn’t let’s soldier on.
9 October 2019 at 6:21 pm #181298Yep! It was Sibierski with a very late goal. A night match if I remember.
9 October 2019 at 9:08 pm #181300Preston get bigger crowds. And again apart from the Whelan years have finished above us. Don’t see that long ago we used to give em the home end at Springfield Park.
Rubbish royston, check out 1985/86 season, Nob End finished 23rd in Division 4 and had to apply for re-election to the Football League, whilst we finished 4th in the Third Division, missing out by 1 point of promotion to Division Two.
As for giving the home end up, wtf have you dreamt that one up from?
Can remember them coming in uninvited a few times though.9 October 2019 at 9:35 pm #181303Yep! It was Sibierski with a very late goal. A night match if I remember.Hmmmm maybe it wasn’t Middlesboro then, because the game I went to was deffo an afternoon game; a gorgeous warm afternoon. What a start to my Wigan journey.
But I do agree … division 1 was a lot of fun. We saw goals, wins, didn’t spend the weeks wages on a ticket, had success and saw kids who hadn’t fully learnt the theatrics of their ‘premadonna idols’ in the prem.
I’ve met some great fun people, had lots laughs, in response to my forum posts been told I haven’t a clue and shared a beer with many. What’s not to like.
9 October 2019 at 10:25 pm #181305If we’re gonna compare ourselves with Preston we should remember, Preston have spent a gazillion years in the shadows, they still go on about Tom Finney because they’ve done nowt else.
What have we done in the last 10 years?
Won the FA Cup
Played in Europe
Knocked Man City out of the cup
Knocked City out of the Cup again
Reached 2 FA Cup semifinals
Played in a Charity Shield final
Relegated twice playing the worst football in memory
Champions twice playing some of the best football in memory
Will Griggs been on fire, all over the world!
Nick Powell, good, bad and sh1*housing
4K at Doncaster
7-0 at Oxford
Stopped the “Fair play” winners going up
5-2 against some other cheats
It goes onWho would you rather be?

Well said Phil.
Watching Latics is brilliant and to be around during these years where we have been slam bang in the middle of such a prolonged history making spell has been phenomenal.
For such a young club, our history and honours are outstanding.
Go back another 10 years and the list of achievements grows longer and longer.
What an incredible club we all support.10 October 2019 at 1:37 am #181323When has our club let investment and crowds get in the way of success ???Throughout our entire history (Whelan years apart who threw millions at it) ya fool! If you take those years away last year would be our most successful years in our history. Funnily enough now the moneys stopped being put in we are languishing towards the bottom of the Championship. Preston get bigger crowds. And again apart from the Whelan years have finished above us. Don’t see that long ago we used to give em the home end at Springfield Park.
Never ever given the home end at Springy to any club. Where did you dream that?
10 October 2019 at 3:20 am #181325I seem to recall it being mentioned on here before about a game in which the Andy’s stand was split

Can remember them coming in uninvited a few times though.
One of the worst I remember was when the Plymouth fans came over from the back of the goals and the paddocks to the side of the Pheonix stand. There was a sea of green all over half of the pitch, but I can’t remember any of them managing to get over the wall ino the home sections.
