Springy hardly had the best segregation in world football. We walked round the ground as kids so we could stand behind whichever goal we were attacking. Even the dugout had a path past the end of it so you could do a lap of honour on the terraces.
10 October 2019 at 12:14 pm #181329I seem to recall it being mentioned on here before about a game in which the Andy’s stand was splitI was at that game. The Police basically had them in the end part, in the corner near the Shevvy end. I seem to recall it kicked off as well. Not bad, but just a bit.
Not the greatest of ideas, being honest.
10 October 2019 at 1:59 pm #181330I remember Hereford fans being in various parts of the ground early seventies.
10 October 2019 at 8:49 pm #181331When has our club let investment and crowds get in the way of success ???
Throughout our entire history (Whelan years apart who threw millions at it) ya fool! If you take those years away last year would be our most successful years in our history. Funnily enough now the moneys stopped being put in we are languishing towards the bottom of the Championship. Preston get bigger crowds. And again apart from the Whelan years have finished above us. Don’t see that long ago we used to give em the home end at Springfield Park.
Never ever given the home end at Springy to any club. Where did you dream that?
I seem to remember it happening. Unless we’ve both had the same dream.
10 October 2019 at 8:57 pm #181332One match in the eighties. A last game of season match against Bradford City. As an experiment there was no segregation. There was no bother. Fans mingled and the experiment was a success.
It was never repeated. Probably because it was a success. The powers that be at The Kremlin Town Hall Wigan wouldn’t have liked that.10 October 2019 at 10:40 pm #181333I remember that donny, it was a bit surreal, two sets of singing fans within spitting distance of each other, singing different songs, and all the rest of the fans mingled together along the ‘Popside’, and not one bit of trouble.
It was a bit different on the day the Port Vale ‘pepper’ boys came to town. I remember one of them with wooly gloves punching me and it felt like he’d hit me with a cushion. Then our old fella jumped in and twatted him with a proper right hander, I bet his head is still spinning.
They all soon ran off once the Goon Squad realised what was happening.10 October 2019 at 10:58 pm #181335Preston get bigger crowds. And again apart from the Whelan years have finished above us. Don’t see that long ago we used to give em the home end at Springfield Park.
Rubbish royston, check out 1985/86 season, Nob End finished 23rd in Division 4 and had to apply for re-election to the Football League, whilst we finished 4th in the Third Division, missing out by 1 point of promotion to Division Two.
As for giving the home end up, wtf have you dreamt that one up from?
Can remember them coming in uninvited a few times though.
One of the worst I remember was when the Plymouth fans came over from the back of the goals and the paddocks to the side of the Pheonix stand. There was a sea of green all over half of the pitch, but I can’t remember any of them managing to get over the wall ino the home sections.
Remember that game horc, they were already on the pop side when the teams came out and it kicked off good style, they then got escorted to the away end across the pitch.10 October 2019 at 11:29 pm #181336Remember the wallsall game, end of season I think? Loads of bother and bricks flying, quite terrifying as as a youngster, I nearly shat myself! Not exactly the great old days really, I have lots of nice memories of roaming round the stadium, standing where u like, sitting on top of walls etc, but it was an armpit of a ground at the end, with awful facilities and terrible access.

Hooliganism became a normal part of the match day experience. Yes it was frightening at times but as a young teenager exciting also. Too many experiences to mention both home and away and always loved to see our lads doing well all be it from a very safe distance, and you know what, for a small town club with a small fan base we did OK.
11 October 2019 at 12:40 am #181338Definitely a game in 90s we gave away fans half of our end under stand.

I think that picture is from an earlier kick off at a game. The reason being, I think the new St Andrews side roof went up in about 88-89, I remember they had started it and done the half from the Town End of the ground in 1988, when we had the white shirt with blue Chevrons in 87-88 season. When Andy Ainscow broke into the side and scored a couple of goals, I recall a photo of him scoring a diving header with the half finished roof on view.
I think the Preston game I was referring to was in about 1992 ish. I was stood on the St Andrews that day and we only switched from the Phoenix stand in about 1991/92.11 October 2019 at 4:51 pm #181355Just did a bit of digging and yes, it was 87-88 when they put the new terrace roof up, the season we also let Springfield Borough Rugby League also play on, and totally ruin the surface.
But they started the new roof FROM the Shevvy end…have a look at the photo on this link…

So yes, the picture above in this thread was earlier than 1987/88 then, as I thought. The Preston game was in about 91 or 92 and as I recall, the paltry line of Police they had up the terrace as segregation was not good enough. I seem to recall they spilled over the febce onto the pitch as well…don’t think it lasted long though.
