1 February 2019 at 12:17 pm #175834It’s done unfortunately and if Cook had no say in it then we are in real trouble. Been here before aka Whelan selling Steve Bruce’s team but somehow I find this more problematic considering our precarious league position.
What Whelan did to Bruce’s team was saving our bacon. We had a unsustainable wage bill on turbo charge that, if we didn’t cull it within 2 years we would have sunk to the dark depths like a Pompey thats unless DW had of thrown all his dosh in which was never gonna happen.
A possible £4 million for Grigg is v.g. bit of business. At least we can’t say “Who’s next to go ?”.If this is the way forward then I think it’s time for our Academy to started producing and some of the younger lads given a go even if only to train and travel as the owners said they would when they took over. We’ve enough olders pros right now that can help these young lads on thier footballing journey. What these guys can show and teach them would be priceless and I can only imagine them coming on leaps and bounds as did MacManaman and Baines.
The problem with that ?, Your manager has to risk take and try youth something Cook is in capable of doing. As long as Cooks here Geldhart and Langs studs will never touch the grass at the DW on a regular basis.
And as for Powell ? I don’t hear anything about contract negotiations, there’s another asset gone but this time on a free another mind bending bit of business to turn down £10 million.I’m beginning to think the IEC don’t give a flying fook and the Royles are clueless, again I hope they prove us all wrong buy investing or giving young the lads a chance but given what I’ve seen so far in the time they’ve been pulling the strings at Wigan I personally think were nothing more than real estate to them and a good one at that.

I don’t bet against my own team. I wish I could because I’d be rich now, but it’s almost like cheating on my wife. In fact I’d feel more dirty backing against us TBH.

What Whelan did to Bruce is exactly what’s happening now. We’re losing money and need to sell a Grigg or Powell every couple of years to pay the bills.
Powell wasn’t sold last year because Sharpe was chairman then, and he’s a Latics fan. The new owners and chairman aren’t fans, so they’ll use their heads – not their hearts to make decisions.
They said all along they wouldn’t be throwing money at it, and would be investing in youth, and we’re sending out our best young players to get first team experience – which is better than sitting on the bench at Wigan.

Spot on as always pal
1 February 2019 at 3:02 pm #1758521 February 2019 at 3:03 pm #175854Paul Cook: “The club desperately wanted to keep Will but this is an offer we simply couldn’t refuse.
“This comes with so much emotional attachment because Will is so popular with our supporters and is somebody who has given everyone associated with the club so many great moments during, not just my time as the club’s manager, but throughout his three-and-a-half years at Wigan Athletic.
“We all wish Will the very best for the future.”
1 February 2019 at 3:12 pm #175855I see our fans are covering themselves in glory as usual on Twitter
1 February 2019 at 3:23 pm #175856The fans are the club and if they want to view an opinion whether the club like it or not that’s up to them. If you prefer Clarke over Grigg that’s your prerogative join and and let others know, I’m sure you will be welcomed :)
1 February 2019 at 3:31 pm #175857This is what separates most owners from fans. They have to see it differently, as a business, otherwise you’re on a slippery road to ruin and there are many examples of this, not least with the club just 10 miles down the road.
Everyone has a price. Grigg met the valuation and was sold. It happens so we shouldn’t be surprised and with Grigg being a popular player it rankles even more.
Grigg is a good League One player and will scores goals at that level but for all the speculation on here that the team doesn’t play to his strengths he has never cut it in the Championship or ever shown signs that he’s likely to.
Players, even legends, have their time and at some point, will go.
Wish him well and get on with supporting your team.
