No not Stam unfortunately, but Bosselli
If you don’t believe that Stam was the worst/laziest player on show for Latics last night I will have to revise my opinion of you.
My point is that many have been talking up Bosselli in recent weeks, and let’s be honest he’s performed in the Capital cup games.
Last night was his chance to further reinforce his claim, and show once again that when called upon he can deliver particularly as he hasn’t had much game time recently, notwithstanding Martinez noises to open up the competition (exception – Fulham, substitute appearance).
Unfortunately, he spurned his chance last night big-time.
That’s not to say others performed as well as one would have expected.
Refer to ABL comments.
Alright Dave , I’ll see your rant and I’ll raise it.After impressive away wins against decent Forest and WHU sides it was obvious we would field a similar line up last night , especially when we have a difficult but vastly more important game coming up this weekend. Last night we probably rested a couple more defenders than previous but the way Bradford played we could have coped with you and me at the back.
Despite playing against the most negative formation I have ever seen , for most of the second half they were using a flat back 6 , we still created enough chances to normally win comfortably. But that’s football – last night nothing went in – maybe at Spurs everything will go in. As the game went on our players lost heart ( along with the fans ) whilst their players ( and crowd ) were lifted – if it had ended after 90 minutes we’d have gone to Bradford next week and murdered them. However it didn’t and they got the penalty shoot out that they came for.
Some of the reactions I’ve seen on here and more so on TNS are completely irrational. Yes , It was a disappointing result but if we go and get something at Spurs it’ll be forgotten quicker than you can say -I was so angry I turned my computer off.
Whatever it was or wasn’t last night, the outcome shouldn’t be forgotten.
To go out against Bradford at home and fail to profit from a favourable next round draw, is without doubt a missed opportunity.
Hopefully, the Bantams will be drawn against Manure (bring to an end the ‘if only…’ debate); be nice for them to make a few bob as well.
Three days before we visit Liverpool, that’s handy !
Beat me to it !
Great honour, but I’m more concerned about him doing himself some mischief (Alcaraz – enforced absence etc.)
Just about the last thing we need based on
(1) blossoming partnership with Kone
(2) last night’s debacle (converting)Fingers crossed !!
Whats your latest view of Ivan Ramis ?
As you asked, I’ll respond :
WEST HAM
Very good performance, not for the fact he scored a cracker but more for his defensive discipline. I feel he was playing as if he had a point to prove (he did kick WHU into touch after all).
If we played WHU every week, then we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion. Maybe their style of football suits him ?
Needs to do the same on a concerted basis to prove his worth.
Looking forward to seeing Alcaraz back.
BRADFORD
Unlucky to have a goal chalked off.
Switched off and went to sleep at one point in the 2nd half, could have cost his team (‘Ramis of old’ ?) ….
Defence not tested last night (pace-wise, fellow Spaniard, Lopez seems to have a bit more about him …)

I wouldn’t worry. Can’t see him getting picked before those three, can you?
Great honour and experience for the lad, though.
Ordinarily no, most certainly not (agreed).
Then again if its a friendly, maybe he’ll get 20-30 mins – who knows ?
And if he does, ….(I’ll hope for the best on all counts).
Stranger things have happened ??!
If you were at the game last night you’ll know that Maloney almost came a cropper in one instance (hefty Bradfordian challenge, guy out of his depth).
Saudi / Argentina …
An opportunity missed by the club and an opportunity missed by some fringe players to make an impression and put some pressure on the first team. Their loss – yes, that’s mainly you Ronnie Stam. The team that Martinez picked was well capable of winning that game and had it took just a few of its chances it would have done so easily.
Oh, and for those one-eyed idiots who will heap all the blame at the door of Senor Gomez, take a look at this extract from the report by the BBC man at the game.
Ramis, who scored a spectacular opener in the 2-1 win over the Hammers, had the ball in the net inside the opening 10 minutes, but the stand-in skipper’s header from Gomez’s drilled free-kick was ruled offside.
Gomez then dissected the Bradford defence with a delightful pass to Mauro Boselli but he dithered and keeper Duke smothered the ball as the Argentine striker tried to take it around him.
The elegant Spaniard was at the centre of everything good for Wigan and was the closest to a first half opener with two delightful volleys.
The first, in the 16th minute, was inches was over the bar while the second, on the stroke of half-time, was spectacularly tipped over by Duke.
Just saying…
No not Stam unfortunately, but Bosselli
Just saying (MSN) ….
Wigan looked comfortable in the early stages and thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Ivan Ramis, captain for the night, headed home Gomez’s free-kick, only to see the referee’s assistant raise their flag.
Five minutes later Mauro Boselli found himself through on goal, but he made a hash of an attempt to go around Matt Duke, appearing to roll his foot over the ball, and the goalkeeper was able to save.
Boselli then nodded down a Ronnie Stam cross for the lively Gomez, who volleyed over the bar.
Boselli was not making the most of the chances that came his way, seeing another header in a good position amount to nothing before sending a low shot inches wide when he had the time and space to do better.
He again failed to finish shortly into the second half of extra-time, clipping tamely into Duke’s arms, and Gomez was then guilty of profligacy, fluffing a one-on-one opportunity.
As I said earlier, Kone/Di Santo have no worries (Bosselli/Gomez).
Penalty-wise, one for statistics, unfortunate that our two regular pen takers (Maloney, Gomez) failed to covert last night for the FIRST time (unless I’m mistaken).
Bradford’s penalties were all top-drawer. Their goalie cut a mean presence in goal (mean brute). Possibly psyched out Maloney …..

Very disappointing.
Chance of a good cup run (favourable next round draw, min. semi-finalist) gone to pot.
Had the early goal stood, would no doubt have been a different outcome. But the longer the game went on, the more you couldn’t envisage us scoring if we played till same time tomorrow.
On tonight’s evidence, Kone /Di Santo have absolutely nothing to fear, competition-wise (Bosselli, Gomez). Don’t understand why Kone wasn’t thrown on before the 90 were up, to inject a little pace and give us a goal threat.
Sat in the West Stand this evening, was a little surprised at full-time during the changeover that Bobby didn’t even address his players (tactics, motivational chat etc.). Was either feeling remarkably chilled (questionable logic) or couldn’t be ars*d.
Fyvie – carrying excess, industrious, little way to go to hit PL standard
Redmond – good performance, tidy player.Have my late grandfather, Les Jackson, to thank. Chairman of the Latics in the mid-60s (days of Alan Brown, Harry Lyon etc.).
He subsequently moved on to assume VP Lancashire FA duties and in so doing gave me exposure at an early age to the best of ‘grass roots’ soccer and big games (FA Cup – Leeds/Sun’land,L’pool/Newcastle, etc.).
Great days.
His devotion / service to football was such that his own daughter swore blind she would never marry anyone interested in football.
Today, both my mother AND father (converted) are season ticket-holders at Latics ;) Have been throughout their spell in the Premiership.
Boy would he find the whole thing unbelievable (Latics in PL, daughter converted to football, etc.)
Can he see that far into space (blue sky) ?
your thoughts on (1) Ramis (2) defence (3) Latics, in general to date ??
(‘essence’)I take it this is your choppy report format way of requesting my opinion in a similar choppy format?
Okay, I’ll play.
Ramis
For: strong, good on the ball
Against: beaten by pace, some rash decisionsNote: La Liga is slower than The Premier League, but La Liga players are not slower than EPL. Ramis needs to adjust to pace of game, not to the pace of players.
He will get stick (Caldwell and Alcaraz two seasons ago?) He will come good (IMO)The Defence
Alcaraz will strengthen. Ramis or Figueroa to give way
Note:. Martinez has faith in him (game time needed). Figueroa to give way?Latics in General To Date
For: better than the start of last season
Against: not as good as the end of last seasonConclusion: I am not a qualified Premier League football coach so my tactical suggestions are both worthless and irrelevant anyway.
There, will that do you?
Ps. this is a forum that encourages literary contribution.
Latics in general :
– same points tally as same stage last year / inferior goal difference
– 7 points worse off for teams playedAll things considered; i.e. stellar finish to 2011/12, close season investments, more experienced squad etc., I’d say more disappointing start this year than last, personally.
Thty, Stop trying to create the divide between the board again. I have spotted you trying to do it a few times now.You are going to have to elaborate on scapegoat because that is not the case and you are wrong. So far Ramis has been poor and a good few goals that could have been prevented by us have gone through him. That isn’t making a scapegoat, That is saying how it is. Why tread on egg shells saying he is doing well if he just isn’t. He might do in time but i very much doubt it. That is where i disagree with Standish. I think his lack of pace in a league where it is bombed from end to end will be the undoing of him here. He would have been well suited at West Ham though if he had gone there because as you say, He is strong in the air and his vision from the back going forward seems very good.
If our system and the way we play cant get maximum points out of West Ham it really will be panic time. And the rumblings start again. Fans (in general) will not pay if there is no value for money and/or no attempt to amend results or the squad.
A constructive post for once, unlike some more recent. goodpost
Concur with much of what you say re. Ramis. The intention is not to make him a scapegoat, merely to express an opinion of feeling underwhelmed and disappointed to date (particularly having regard to financial outlay).
Expressing a negative opinion here does not necessarily imply giving the same player a berating on a Saturday afternoon pitch side either (for those who assume unfortunately that the two always go hand in hand).
To the essence of the issue (about time you did # … ) – sub-standard defender/form – practically week in /out.
Metaphor was taken to support my initial personal opinion view after the Chelsea game. I didn’t pass it off as my own (source was quoted). It has however remained most apt (why re-invent the wheel ?)
Concept of free speech ???
No, the essence of this issue is that you quoted a metaphor from a daily tabloid and yes, named the source on that occasion. You then used the same metaphor twice more over subsequent weeks without mentioning that it had been taken from a newspaper.
It wasn’t a particularly funny metaphor in the first instance, which is why I noticed when you’d used it a second, then a third time.
The wheel doesn’t need reinventing because it can’t be improved upon – so if you think using the ‘Ramis is slower than an out of season holiday in Majorca’ is a flawless metaphor, then fair enough, you wear it out and I won’t mention it again.
Free speech? Absolutely, but not recyling.
Ps. (about time you did … ) No idea what this means.
your thoughts on (1) Ramis (2) defence (3) Latics, in general to date ??
(‘essence’)Sorry, no.
You may /may not recall Des Walker (CB, Nottm Forest). Great PL player in his prime.
So the Forest song went ‘You’ll never beat Des Walker, you’ll never ..’
Moreover, if you are going to get done for pace, then take one for the team (e.g. Ramis – 1st goal …he ain’t even quick, or smart (?) enough
to do that. Not need to apologise. As you said in your last post – freedom of speech and all that.
NOT APOLOGISING FOR ANYTHING, BUD
‘You may/may not recall Des Walker…’ funnily enough, yes I do recall him as I was in my twenties when he playing, and coincidentally I met him last summer.
YOU MET HIM … LUCKY YOU !
Yes, Des Walker was incredibly quick for a centre half. He was pretty much an anomaly however, and played at centre half for England with Tony Adams, Terry Butcher and Mark Wright – great centre halves, but would you back any of them in a footrace again a quick lad on the wing?
DES WALKER AN ANOMALY ??? NO – JUST AN EXAMPLE …
So you disagree that a ‘winger’ would be expected to beat a centre half for pace every time? Seriously?
TOO SIMPLISTIC (E.G. ‘YOUR ANOMALY’, DES WALKER)
And, taking ‘one for the team’ if the man gets past you? What the f’ck are you on about? It’s 2012. You don’t scythe players down if they get past you these days.
RIGHT SO YOU’RE TELLING ME THAT NOT ONE PLAYER ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON HAS BEEN BOOKED FOR A CALCULATED ‘POOR CHALLENGE’ (AND I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT ‘DOING HARM’ TO ANOTHER PLAYER)
You’re likely to get either sent off or at the very least a yellow card – putting you on edge for the rest of the game.
you mean youve changed your mind after reading my reply lolNo, not at all; I only hope that you’re right and that we WIN
fair comment mate all opinions i will bet you west ham dont score two my prediction 2-1 laticsI’ll reserve judgement until I’ve seen the team sheet (as above).
Hope you’re right !
