        Some interesting statistics:

        Coyle – games as manager 331, won 139, drawn 75, lost 117 – winning percentage 41.99%

        Roberto – games 301, won 114, drawn 84, lost 104 – winning percentage 37.87%

yep but digging deeper into that, his win ratio is decreasing year on year …. 63% with Falkirk, 51% with St Johnstone, 42% with Burnley and 33% with Bolton ….. mmmmmmm

not my choice, but lets see what happens before we start giving him stick ….. I am more concerned about the 12 month rolling contract … that is NOT the way to build a club or team. Its the financial easy way out, which is always Whelans way unfortunately …. time for the old lad to hand over the reigns I think.

I’m always very positive when it comes to WAFC, but also I realise what we have achieved so far has been amazing and way beyond anything dreamed possible. Not a 100% lightsider and not a 100% darksider ….. is there a “greyside” ???

Top 10 in the premiership is WAY ABOVE our standard and what we as a club can aim for ….. the top 10 in the premiership get stronger and richer every year, year on year (one of the reasons for us playing super football, yet still getting relegated last year) …. given my experience of WAFC over the years, I would say that the Championship is our level and anything above should be cherished. Just my opinion like.

I have to say that Arthur_Itis has hit the nail on the head for me ….. I feel exactly the same. The problem with the modern game is that we have all been “Sky-Hyped” … into believing that the Premiership is the be all and end all of football. The fact that most teams are there just to provide funds and opposition for the Big 5 or 6 seems to have passed most people by. The fact that most struggle year in year out just to survive also seems to pass people by.

All I want from my team is entertaining football, maybe a home grown hero coming through the ranks and above all to play with pride for the Tree and Crown …. I want my boys to share in that feeling as they grow up …. whether that is when they are paying £7 for a hotdog at the Emirates or if they are paying £1.50 for a Bovril at Rochdale in League 2 …. it matters not.

The reality of it is that we have reached our footballing peak, we will never win the FA Cup again and we probably will never get back into the top 10 in the Premiership, so lets just enjoy what we have and be proud of it.

chatting with a Bolton fan today about this and his views on the OC reign was that the team wasn’t fit enough, spent too much time in training simply playing 5-asides and did little else – did zero set play work, plus the team had little/no-structure at all when it took the field.

hmmmmmmmm, not a great endorsement :(

think he is a god-botherer too, which doesn’t sit well with me either :(

what confused me a little was that in one sentence DW said “he’s on a rolling 12 month contract” and then “if any club wants to take Roberto then they will have to pay up his remaining year” …. errrr, no

as with most things DW comes out with, there is an element of truth, an element of “made up fact” and most times a bit of a dig at something or somebody ……

I’m a believer oh yes, but not of anything DW comes out with. :P

Good luck to him in the future.

He got us playing the best football we have ever seen at Wigan and also won the FA Cup …. as a player and manager he gave this club some of its best ever times. He has also revolutionised how the club is run and managed. Also, very rare in this day and age, a thoroughly respectable chap.

Time to move on …. I think Jones would be a good bet, but he may leave too, so lets just hope for a sensible appointment and a quick one too.

If they can retain Jones, he would be my choice.

don’t you just love articles like this ….. :silly:

what they never mention is how each year, the top half of the EPL gets stronger and stronger not only the usual suspects with Billionaire owners and bottomless money pits, but now the lesser clubs too (like Southampton for example, Sunderland, Newcastle, even Norwich)are all able to pay the transfer fees and wages to get the good players from abroad, the ones that might not have come otherwise …… this makes it harder and harder each year to survive so comparing season 2012-13 to 2007-2008 is just nonsense ….. we got relegated this year, but not by a huge margin, sod all really over the course of the season. We could have easily stayed up.

In my opinion, and others will disagree, Roberto has taken WAFC to a totally new level, both on and off the field …. they are a totally different footballing club to the one that Jewell took up and have such a solid and bright future …..

It would be fantastic if he decides to stay. :)

I am not a Caldwell fan at all, but I think to be fair to him, he would be decent at Championship level and worth retaining for the team.

I can only agree with the above posts – the decision of Martinez will be key to the next 5 years for Wigan Athletic. If he goes, then it will be wholesale changes, but if he stays we have a really good chance of bouncing straight back as I think that we will retain the core of the team.

The next few weeks will be interesting !!!

all it needed was McArthur to have a more clinical finish from 7yrds out and we would have been 3-1 up ……

well I for one disagree …. RM has got us playing football like very few teams in the league can, he has transformed us from what we were a few years ago. Don’t forget that we lost Ramis for a big chunk of the season and Alcaraz at an important time too ….. those two would have been the bedrock of our defence. Instead we had to throw a woefully out of touch Caldwell in at times and it cost us.

I would have loved to see what he would have done next year with the current squad and other players coming in. My belief is that it takes a manager about 5 years to transform a team and club around … owners, supporters and the media especially seem to want and expect results in 6 months …..

I would ALWAYS watch a team (win or lose) that Roberto puts together, because its GREAT to watch …. it might not always win, but it will give 100% and be attractive.
