17 May 2010 at 2:30 pm in reply to: Transfer news, paper talk, who you want – get it all in here #33747Huddersfield have a promising ‘keeper, I think they’ll be getting a lot of competition to keep him next season.
Alex Smithies.
He’s been linked with a move to Everton for a good while now.
I would say that under Bruce the team as a whole had more balance, and looked better as an attacking force, yes. OK he had Valencia who gave quality right sided width, but Martinez has Moses who could do the same.If we’re playing 4-5-1. (we’re not playing 4-3-3 as some suggest), I’d rather see it the way Bruce played it with real width. Take Zog example, and assuming we had any sort of centre forward, Zog gets the ball down left flank beats full back, gets to byline, we should have the centre forward at near post, the right sided winger on far post and the advanced midfielder(s), say Watson, bursting through the middle. Because Zog and others aren’t cutting inside all the time you’re giving him more space to run through. Thats what Tottenham did to us in the 9-1 win with Lennon torturing Edman.
A tactical overhaul may benefit the team, I agree, and such a thing could improve the number of chances we create, goals we score etc. However, on an individual level, N’Zogbia has improved manifold this season whilst being played ‘out of position’.
It could well be the case that if we played with more width and balance then we would be a better team, but I think putting N’Zogbia back on the left flank would be detrimental to him as an individual because of the reasons I said before.
So you’d rather see him play down the left, get to the byline and cross? Despite the fact that we’ve got one up-front and have won very few contested headers in attacking positions this season?
Creating chances is relative, too. N’Zogbia on the wing and Pele up front would probably produce more goals and chances than N’Zogbia on the wing with Jason Scotland up front.
Would you say that he was better under Bruce then, when played down the left?
N’Zogbia is our player of the season, because of the shift to the right-hand side. . .
We saw under Bruce, when he was played as an auxiliary left-winger, an average footballer; fair? He never looked like he would be capable of producing the sort of stuff that he has this season and that was because he played one-dimensionally, as a left-winger I.e. get the ball and run down the flank with it to try and get a cross in. Standard stuff for someone playing in their ‘comfortable’ position, and he never set the world on fire when played there.
Shift him to the right, and you eliminate the option of giving him the scope to be one-dimensional. Now, he has to cut in onto his favourite foot and in order to get into a position to get a cross in on his left, he has to beat defenders and bring some thought into play because it’s no longer a case of get the ball, run, cross. Now he is forced to play with a more thoughtful, considered approach which has brought out some great performances from him.
We could harp on about assist statistics etc, but the truth is that given our impotence in front of goal this season, nobody would have excelled on our flanks (on paper) so I think we should judge our players on the football that we’ve seen them play rather than stats, which can be very misleading in judging a player’s ability or performance.
Is that supposed to be a joke :lol:Eh?

He’d be a good buy for Pompey in the championshipDindane was on-loan at Portsmouth, and he’s owned by RC Lens who value him at £4 million. We could offer them Jason Scotland and then watch him tear Ligue Un apart though.
I don’t really like Kasabian but they do rousing exceedingly well.
He’s a big lad though. Isn’t one that is just a pace player. What I mean is he will put up a fight when needed. He has never been given a chance REALLY aswell.Just a question..Why do you know his height? Im hoping you had to look that up
Football manager geek. (I looked it up really, because I talk fachts [/Rafa])
The problem that I have with him, is that he’s too Marlon King. Tore up the Championship, then has shown flashes of what he’s capable of whilst in the Premiership, but just doesn’t look like he belongs at this level. King looked the sort that would put his head in too, lest we forget.
Whether or not he’s had a chance is null. He would have on merit, had he been good enough in training or in the (limited) game time that he has had.
Big and strong, get a few goals..Why not have him here? He’s not that big (5′ 11”) and has only scored nine goals since leaving Preston. He was prolific in the Championship but if we’re going to judge players on how well they do in that division then we’d be better off signing Jason Scotland. No, wait.
13 May 2010 at 5:53 pm in reply to: Transfer news, paper talk, who you want – get it all in here #33296Dindane is in talks with Wolves over a £4 million move, isn’t he? Plus, he’s not that good. Piquionne has looked decent when I’ve seen him but has been linked with Everton and Blackburn. I can honestly see no difference between the ability of Nugent, Marlon King and Caleb Folan.
Beattie is a gosbhite, but a talented (sort of) one and would be a like-for-like replacement for Moreno with the added boost of Beattie looking capable of finding the net every now and then. It looks like he and Dave Kitson will be leaving Stoke this summer and I wouldn’t really mind either of them.
Personally, I’d be delighted if we managed to bring in Steven Fletcher. For me, he’s the best player from any of the relegated teams.
Yeah, he seems like a stand-up guy. I don’t think he’d steal it.
8 home-grown players required for next season, and McArthur would give us one more. He’s young and clearly talented; and dirt cheap too!
Who do we have who is likely to still be here? Boyce, Bramble, Kirkland, Watson, McCarthy, Moses (not sure that he is old enough to count towards the quota), Caldwell.
Any more? Pollitt? N’Zogbia counts but he’ll be at Barcelona by then.
You strike me as the type of person that laughs at people falling over in programmes like ‘you’ve been framed’Very slapstick…………….. :?
I have a Monty Python avatar, which highlights what I laugh at: intelligent wit.
I’m done arguing about Davidson. The kind of person that thinks he’s funny is the very same type that will not succumb to reasonable argument.
Why is he? He was sound, actually.Listen mate, I don’t do all these modern ‘trendy’ comedians, such as Man-fat, Jimmy Carr (funny as dogmuck), and all them. They aren’t funny.
All this ‘new style’ comedy is a load of rubbish.
Racist, alcoholic, wife-beaters are seldom construed as comedic genius, unless of course it’s just good old Jim Davidson. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a square, and have nothing against playing with people’s sensitivities for comedic purposes and certain people do it well, such as Gervais, but he has the intelligence to do it with taste and subtlety rather than being a Manning mkII.
And ‘new-style’ comedy? It’s much the same you know, just less making formulaic jokes about stereotypes. Davidson panders to morons, largely because he’s one himself.
I did like Big Break though.
And the following thread renders your views on comedy void:
Rachid Bouaouzan!
Imagine, he plays right-wing on Sunday, breaks Ashley Cole’s leg in half, Leighton Baines becomes England’s first choice left-back.
8-)
