Holt was at home with a pint and a pie, preparing for Saturday’s game.

In the Amazon, there are one thousand fish you can enjoy.
And seven that can enjoy you.
I know Jonny ! ha ha ha ! Just messing !Don’t mess with me, Phil!
We’re already past 430. We can reach 500 before Christmas!
The man came and said he wanted us to stop just surviving and instead become a top 10 Prem club and see us playing in Europe. He didn’t achieve that. Even European qualification came by the most unlikeliest of routes – you can be guaranteed that he was assuming it would be via our league position. So, by Bob’s own targets he failed.Oh I see! You think that when Roberto arrived, he should have boldly announced;
“We’ve got one of the lowest wage bills in the Premier League, and we’re going to cut it by 25%.
“We’re going to sell our best players every year, and replace then with bargain buys.
“We’re going to struggle at the foot of the table, but if we all out-perform, we may just stay up.”That would have attracted new players and new fans alike, I’m sure.
Meanwhile, other teams were spending more each year. Southampton, a newly promoted team spent £32,700,000 on transfers in 2012/13 and then £37,500,000 more in 2013/14. How on earth could Wigan and Martinez compete with that?
Wigan already had one of the lowest wage bills in the Premier League. If Martinez’ performance was so shocking, then Whelan would have sacked him.
Whelan was asking the impossible of Martinez. That’s why other clubs still came in for him – Aston Villa and Liverpool. Roberto turned them down to stay.
Just for the record, Bruce went 13 league games without a win at Wigan, and he wasn’t sacked either.
In all honesty, I think most managers could have kept us there with the resources and more importantly the backing he received from D Whelan. The backing he received from D Whelan?
He had to reduce the wage bill by 25%!
If you deem getting a club relegated a success then Owen Coyle will be managing Brazil or Spain next. But he was regarded as a success – and that is why he has gone on to manage Everton.
Please note that admission prices raise by £1 on the day of the game.

Based on last year’s accounts (season 2011/12) Everton had the 8th highest turnover and the 10th highest wages.
Everton have probably fallen behind West Ham and Fulham with their wage bill, so Martinez will have out-performed if Everton finish in the top half.
The same season, Wigan had the lowest turnover and third lowest wage bill, but Martinez still kept them up. That counts as a success.
there is no other word but failure to describe his tenure at Wigan Athletic.Martinez had to cut the wage bill by 25%.
September 2010; Scharner, 30, reckons it’s a clear sign that Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is no longer prepared to bankroll the club and said: “I had a great relationship with the chairman but he was right to let me go because he had to cut the wage bill. He’s done a great job with Wigan – six years in the Premier League is unbelievable for a club like that.”
Martinez kept them there for two more years. But when other clubs were increasing their spending – enormously in the case of clubs like Southampton – the result was inevitable.
We’ve passed 400 posts but my target is 500!
Yes, I’m going for quantity rather than quality so this thread should be ideal.
You don’t have to be pro-Martinez to recognise that the posts about Bottom Four Bob are usually untrue and often bizarrely ridiculous.
You don’t have to be pro-Martinez to want to correct them. It’s encouraging to find that there are so many fair-minded people.
Santa Clasue, of course.
That’s a thought. Que sera, sera. We’re going to Napoli.
But ‘WeregoingtoBarnsley’ wasn’t a prediction – it was a fact. When I got home from Wembley and the Emirates, I couldn’t log on under my old name. I had to register under a new name, and it seemed appropriate.
But I may well have to change it at the end of the season – Barnsley aren’t doing very well!
Mods – you can unpin the Maribor threads now.
