Maurice Whittle vs. Sheff Wednesday 1977
the first time I was allowed to go to a football match on my own instead of with my dad – exciting, frightening, ultimately exhilarating; the first day of the rest of my life
The player we miss the most is:
Amir Zaki, pre December 2008
That’s not a bad estimate….
We’ve done this issue to death on several occasions, and here’s the Independent article that was published in February this year, which states about Wigan:
Wigan Athletic
Turnover: £46.3m
Operating profit: –£17.0m
Net debt: £54.0m
Interest payment: £1.5mOn this basis, even if our crowds went from 18,000 to 25,000 = 7,000 @ 20.00 (average, incl kids) = 2.6M extra ticket income, then we would be some way short of breaking even
Strikes me that we (as a stepping-stone club) may be paying too much in wages.
HindleyIf this club doesn’t sell players, it can’t afford to play in the Premier League anyway, as there isn’t the income from other revenue streams (including TV rights) to sustain the club’s existence.
I don’t know the figures involved but assuming that TV income is a minimum of 30M surely this easily covers the wages of 20 (good/promising) players averaging about 20 grand a week (= 20M/year) ?
palace:
“When Martinez and the players do eventually move on they … will not give a s!”t about the club ”Sorry but you are WRONG.
The reason that Martinez came to Wigan in the summer was because he DOES care passionately about Wigan.
The reason that many (most?) people welcomed him back was because he has always spoken well of and with passion for Wigan.
The reason that many (most?) people, whilst reserving the right to question some of his selections, tactics, comments, etc., will not turn against him (in a banner-making type way) is that, unlike any potential replacement you could possibly think of, his is also undoubtedly a supporter of the club as well as the manager.
OK, we would all like to be winning more games – it may even statistically be the worst season for 35 years (can’t really be bothered researching) BUT to say that Martinez “doesn’t give a s!”t about the club”, sorry but WRONG.That is why we can say truthfully that at the moment (in fact always) we are all in this together, you, me, Martinez and all.
I would add that if large numbers (of supporters) all throw their toys out of the pram before or during the Villa game and then again before or during the Burnley game then it is unlikely to be of any more help to the cause than bringing xxx or yyy on as a substitute.
Each to their own – everybody pays their money and can have their say but for as long as Martinez doesn’t ever come out with “we have crap crowds” (true as it may be) or “we have crap supporters, many of whom never stop whinging” (also true) like some of his predecessors then in return I will offer my fervent support to him and to the club.
Roll on Tuesday.
galacTIC,
these are not really questions, they are a telling off
– much akin to the wife asking why you had to have an extra pint ?
and then felt the need to call at the chippy on the way home ? hadn’t you already spent enough money already ?1. given that our midfield players seem to be very slow in getting forward to support the lone striker, what instructions are each of our 5 midfield players given in terms of going forward ?
2. so that we may be able to witness what better things may possibly lay ahead for us, is there a premiership or european team whose style of play we are trying to emulate ?
jay,
sorry but none of the links in your article actually work (at the moment)
wouldn’t put any of my own money on it but quite fancy a free £25 on wigan to win 3-0
suspect the odds would be quite good on that one …
