The fact that they felt the need to put WIGAN in capital letters with an exclamation mark after it, was the clue you NUMPTY CHUBSTER! B)

When I first read that the other day I couldn’t help thinking it could be an Oldham supporter.
I hope that the police are not that gullible to presume having “wafc” in a user name automatically means you support Wigan Athletic.

Spot on? That is the biggest band waggoner comment I’ve ever heard. Play second string and I’m not coming, however if you do win and progress, I will not bother if you play a second string team, I’m having some of that glory. Think about what you are implying carefully.

In no way, can you possibly call me a bandwagoner, John.

So no, I think YOU need to think carefully before implying that I am a bandwagon supporter. I believe that in my time as a fan, including standing on a piss wet Springfield Park with around 800 others for a Leyland Daf cup game Versus Bury, circa 1991, I have EARNED the right to decide whether or not I attend cup games in future.

And yes, I WILL be picking and choosing whether I go or not. Because after the other night, it shows that our manager isn’t that bothered about cup games……so why on earth should us fans be?

You are not telling me that the 28,000 or so we took to Cardiff are all die-hard fans? I have come round to the way of thinking that yes, I WILL pick and choose cup games in future, because in no way do I want to witness a game like the other night, which was a disgrace. Friggin freezing and my little lad probably put off for life. All in all, a brilliant nights work. Not.

ADDENDUM: To be honest, I’m mostly p’d off because 2 seasons work of getting my little lad (aged 6) really interested in latics and to the point that he has just started really enjoying the game (he really enjoyed West Ham game at home, and was buzzing off Ramis’ thunderbolt) and taking notice of everything….and all that has been undone by one night of a shambles against a team 3 leagues lower than us. That’s what REALLY has p’d me off, and I believe the club now deserve all they get if folk don’t turn out for cup games in future.

(I actually stayed to the end, unlike many who walked out at full time-did they realise there was extra time? I stayed right until Gomez shat his shorts and bottled it, and in the process I was bordering on child cruelty, as my lad was tired, cold, getting upset, and wanted to go home. So in future, balls to cup matches.)
I know you have history with the Latics I’ve seen it first hand. I said it was a band waggoner’s comment which is a different thing.
Apart from when I’m tuttled with ale I do tend to think before I type Dave. :P B)

Yip that was the weekend I was on about. Me and my mate was in the hotel just up from the one the players stopped in. We were given the attic room and felt like we was staying on the moon. Got up for breakfast threw shedfulls of full English down our necks and 6 gallons of orange juice as you do when hung over. We set off up the never ending stairwells to have a lie down as you do when bloated with a fry up. Got to the room and my mate turned round and started laughing. Whats up I said. Fekin room key still on breakfast table he chorttled, followed by ten mins of arguing who was going down for it. We came to a compromise and both went down. :woohoo:

When we played Swansea the other week, my mate from Newport took us to the hotel that the players stopped at Friday night, The Vale of Glamorgan golf and country club.
Three middle aged chaps did a mini “meet and greet” as the players boarded the coach. Got a few nods off the players, but Bobby didn’t come out with the players so we thought he may have already gone straight to the ground. Suddenly, out he came a few minutes later with hands full of clip board, brief case, ipad etc.

As he approached us he nodded and smiled then carefully placed all his belongings on the floor and one by one shook our hands and thanked us for travelling down. You could see he was being so sincere and meant what he said.

I remember doing a similar thing in Bournemouth many moons ago when Benson was in charge. The players walked out like lambs to the slaughter, there must have been about 50 of us outside the hotel and yet the players and Benno trudged past heads down. Just two players acknowledged us, Scott Green was one and yes, Roberto Martinez was the other.
A true gent in every sense of the word and I’m so glad he is managing our football club. goodpost

Don’t forget spending tens of millions of pounds on players won’t guarantee they will improve your team forthright. There are plenty of examples where players have just not hacked it in the EPL for whatever reason. I’ll give you our very own Mauro Bosselli as an example [Although I still think given a run he may come good].
What about Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stuart Downing at Liverpool. Our own Zog at Villa. SWP, the thug and Cisse at QPR, I remember someone on here bleating on about QPR spending loads on players in the window whilst we were spending zilch. Check the league tables last season and this and look were QPR finished and were they are now.
You can give these players 70 plus grand a week it doesn’t mean they will deliver week in week out.

Money [transfer fee and wages] does have some influence on the quality of team you can assemble, but it doesn’t guarantee success. In some instances it causes unrest in a squad, as all 20 odd players believe they should be in the starting 11.
I believe Bobby and big Dave are running a very steady and value for money ship. We don’t have many, if any, prima donas who think they should be playing for Barcelona and warrant 100k p/w wages. We are not paying out daft wages, yet we are still competing with the best.
What a great position to be in hey, every time we beat a QPR or a Sunderland we are doing it with a team costing a fraction of theirs, it must make their managers squirm with envy.
I honestly think we are in good hands and everything about the club is bang on, from transfer policy, wage structure to youth development. keep doing what your doing Bobby and Dave and see were it takes us. goodpost

I personally think we have gone as far as we are going to go. We are always going to be struggling in the top flight and will always lose more than we win. Now if we continue to cause the odd upset then that will balance up the odd debacle and so therefore we keep watching ! We will always have to sell our best players and will always have to look for bargain buys just to survive in the Prem. It’s a pity RM’s domestic cup philosophy is what it is because a good cup run is always good for morale and that is what is needed at WAFC in my opinion. If we don’t get the odd upper like that then we have to be content with pretty much the same year in year out ! Win 1 draw 1 lose 3 with the odd upset thrown in now and again we obtain survival….Just ! That is the way it will always be I’m afraid !

I’m not sure about that. Think back to the championship days and leagues 1 and 2, who would have thought getting in the prem was possible?.

We have proved that on our day with the right decisions and a bit of luck we can beat any team in the EPL, its just consistency that we need. This comes with keeping a team together, only losing 1 or 2 in the transfer window each year.

I honestly feel that this team is capable of a top 10 finish this season, the likes of Sunderland, Fulham, Villa and West Brom will be setting their sites at this and possibly Europa league. Are they genuinely any better than us?

My next milestone is getting into Europe, be it a top 6/7 finish or the cup final route. OK it may take a few years but it is possible. Fighting it out for a champions league place may be out of our reach for the reasons Filmoss has stated, but the next best thing will certainly be on Whelan’s and Martinez’s radar over the next 3-5 years. Well Norwich and Swansea have progressed to the Quarters tonight. Add to those Leeds, Middlesbrough and Villa from last night and you cant help but think what might have been !!

LEAGUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL DRAW

Leeds United v Chelsea
Swansea v Middlesbrough
Norwich v Aston Villa
Bradford v Arsenal

Good draw for Bradford, Emirates would probably have been better (£££)

Wigan ?

Beat Arsenal (win, draw, pens), avoid Chelsea and a Wembley appearance was very much up for grabs ….
Firstly, may I say this post is NOT a knee jerk reaction after last night. But reading a few posts on here today, I thought I’d start a debate as to how we think we are progressing under Martinez.

People keep saying we are making progress, but yet I was staggered at how poor our fringe players performed last night, suggesting our squad is weak and if we have any injuries or suspensions, we don’t have any reliable quality to call upon.

People say we have progressed…..but how? I don’t see it. I looked at a programme from 07/08 today, when Bruce was in charge, and we were no better off points wise at this same stage as the season. So points wise, no better off, squad wise we are certainly no better off. We don’t have a reserve team, we have this ‘development squad’ nonsense……

…come on, explain how we are better off? Because we are what, 3, or is it 4, I forget, seasons into Martinez’s reign, and how are we better off? I don’t see as we are, in all honesty.

Now lads (and lasses), no falling out. Let’s just debate it, thanks.

No need for us to fall out Dave, you will do that with yourself if your not careful, try to hold yourself together and think before you type.

Have a look at our achievements last year, not the 8 game losing run but how many points we accumulated and the position we finished in the league. I make it 7 points clear of relegation with an 11 goal better GD than 3rd from bottom Noblot. Add into the mix the fact we took our first ever points off the mighty Man U, beat Arsenal on their own midding and Liverpool on their own precious Anfield.

Have we progressed……er yes I would say we have. During the close season we have managed to hold on to Bobby and he has managed to hold on to the nucleus of last seasons better performing team. Diame and Rodders didn’t feature much in that good run only Victor has escaped the friendly, warm family home that is Wigan Athletic.

This season has been a bit frustrating as our general play has deserved more than the 8 points we have bagged, nobody can deny that. We are definitely looking an all round better team, with Franco and kone causing any defence problems and the James boys winning more midfield battles than they lose.

Yes, I say we have and are still progressing under Martinez. Lets see what this season brings and not get our knickers in a twist over last nights cup exit. Has some posters have already said, we didn’t actually play that bad last night, we just didn’t finish. That’s football for you, if that header from Ramis hadn’t been ruled out, Bradford would have had to come out of their penalty box and I’m sure it would have been 5 or 6.

Take a chill pill and get yourself psyched up for a thrilling game at WHL. B)
