That was the first home game of the season, after a summer transfer activity that wasn’t exactly “spectacular” and led to Dick Advocaat walking away a month later. I can assure you that as much as the fans would like the owner to spend money like the Sheiks do, the level of discontent at Sunderland games is nothing like it is at many other premier league stadiums, as we accept that the team are very limited in terms of how high we can get. If we survive this season, then I would still only expect mid-table obscurity next season – being safe after 35 games would suit me! Compared to Newcastle, who expect top 4 every year because they finished there once upon a time, and Villa, who believe because they are Villa they have a God-given right to be in the top flight, then you’d find the Sunderland fans a very realistic bunch in terms of ambition.

(and before anyone points out that this was posted whilst the Warriors were playing, I know – I’m at work at the moment!)

5000 away fans is more than enough, as far as a football perspective we want as little encouragement as possible for the opposition.

If anything I’d want them in one of the corners of the ground to lose the kop like effect of a full stand behind the goal.

But crowd numbers have no bearing on the on-field performance (I’m sure Ive read that phrase somewhere before ;) ).

The current bottom 3 of the premier league all average considerably more than the current leaders. In your league, Sheff Utd, Bradford & Coventry would be running away from the rest and Walsall would be facing relegation.
A big supportive crowd can help a team play better, but a big negative crowd usually has the opposite effect.

No point getting forty thousand on every week if they just boo the team – and that’s what’s been happening at Newcastle for years in my opinion.

They got delusions of grandeur when Keegan was manager in the 90s, and started to believe the hype that they were a huge club that deserved Champions league football, and had the best fans in the Britain etc.

And now, unless they’re challenging for the top four and playing attractive football, nothing is good enough, and while they’re loud and supportive when things are going right, the second it isn’t going right, they’re quick to boo, unfurl their banners, throw their season tickets, call for the manager to be sacked, the board to resign, the owner to sell up etc.

Most clubs have fickle fans, but the Geordies are beyond fickle these days and are easy to whip into a frenzy (as Callum McManaman proved with his ‘life threatening’ tackle).

And sorry Mutty, but I suspect Sunderland are going the same way.
Agree with you totally about the toxic atmosphere at Villa Park and the demonstrations against Lerner and Ashley, but can you recall a single report of the Sunderland fans protesting at a match against the owner, because I cant. The atmosphere is very pro-the team, but the simple fact is the players either don’t care, aren’t good enough or a mix of both. The problem lies within the geographical location – many top players will not play for anyone outside of London unless its Man City, Man Utd or Liverpool, and even average players take a hell of a lot of convincing to move so far north. Shelvey £80K a week, Johnson £60K a week being prime examples.

Mutty, this is a serious question, have you ever actually watched Sunderland play

Yes. I attend between 10-15 games a season, more aways than home because of where I live & work. I know a ST holder who gets me the tickets before they sell out and gets the loyalty points for the bigger games.

in reply to: The North East Shift In Fortunes! #148106
Agreed. We would actually run the risk of there being more away fans

    Now I am shocked.

Are you seriously suggesting that the Latics’ return to the Championship will not have more than 8,000 home fans for the games?

I agree with you Nuneaton but it couldn’t happen at Latics. Remember the Kremlin like Wigan Council and the Wigan Police dictators would find some pawltry excuse to not help Latics and they would have their say in it. Practically..simple. Logistics put in place by the Latics hating (unless you win FA Cups and put the town on the world sporting map) authorities..a nightmare.

So you agree with Nuneaton agreeing with me, but you disagreed with me when I said it?

Do you try to start fights in telephone boxes for shits & giggles?

And that was 2005. The last time you won at the JJB/DW was 2013. But we have also won in the interim in the Premier League, so it’s a bit selective just to choose the Championship game. :)

Not really. The thread was asking whether you’d like both Newcastle & Sunderland to be playing in the 2nd division next season. All the meetings since 2005 have been in the premier league, when Sunderland have had losing seasons, been generally shit and have escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth. Even now, we have sold out full allocations on 15 of 16 away games. Last season was the same – sell out.

The point that I was making was when Sunderland have a successful season, even in the lower leagues, the demand for away tickets increases to the point where they could easily take over some grounds – can you remember pre-2005 any visiting side even coming close to filling the Boston Stand? It was the same in 2006/7 under Keane, when we took 9000 to Barnsley, 7500 to Hillsborough etc etc.

If Sunderland go down (you’ll have a very good idea by 2.45 on Saturday) and if Wigan come up, and if Sunderland are having a successful season by the time Sunderland come to the DW, expect the away end to sell out, and expect many fans in the other 3 stands too.

I take it that if we go down and if we win a few games, the couple of thousand or so who frequent the Boston stand will shift across to make room for the visiting fans, rather like the last time we last visited in the 2nd division.

Sorry, mutty. But that’s never been done.
When the JJB first opened the East Stand was the away stand, but that changed and away fans were moved to teh North Stand.

It has NEVER been the case that the stand has been “shared” – there is no facility to separate the concourse.
Who said anything about sharing? I was suggesting that the home fans could move across to the West Stand. Surely you haven’t forgotten what it was like when a winning Sunderland team last came to town:

in reply to: The North East Shift In Fortunes! #148077
Newcastle will but the other two are much smaller clubs than Newcastle and will only travel if they are winning.

In an away season of 2 wins, 4 draws and 10 defeats Sunderland have sold out full allocations on all bar one game this season.

I take it that if we go down and if we win a few games, the couple of thousand or so who frequent the Boston stand will shift across to make room for the visiting fans, rather like the last time we last visited in the 2nd division.

Is it just me or would anyone else like to see Newcastle and Sunderland go down and Middlesboro go up! :)

Having Villa, Newcastle & Sunderland on your fixture list would boost your average attendance to five figures.

Bowton relegated. Nob End licked. Eggs humiliated. Latics one step closer. If Carlsberg made weekends……

Just a shame Latics had to tumble down two divisions to get a weekend like this for you.

    in reply to: Blackpool #147952

The majority if not all the supporters who have followed Latics away all season will get tickets. The ones who want to go because it’s blackpool a way and want to go on the pish may not get a ticket. Seems perfectly fair to me. I can understand those fans who can’t commit to a season ticket due to work or family issues, but why suddenly do some of these same fans find time to go to Blackpool?. 3000 is more than a fair allocation for this match based on our away following all season and home crowds. If fans want to guarantee a ticket then they know what to do, but they can’t afford to wait and see if we are in a promotion race before they do it.

Saved me the Job. My Thoughts exactly.

Bullet seems under the impression he’s entitled to away tickets without any commitment to the club in the form of a season ticket. These “away birds” eh?

No excuse next year at £199.
Many of the clubs who experience demand for away tickets greater than availability operate a “Loyalty Points” system for ST Holders, where every away fixture attended gets a point and those with the most points get first dibs on the tickets. Its not ideal, as family members can often have different numbers of points, but is the fairest way of rewarding those who have made the more difficult journeys. I’m sure the WAFC database will know exactly who bought a ticket for Gillingham, Millwall & Peterborough, and could offer them first refusal on a Blackpool ticket.

    Serious question here fellas:

If you do go up, do you think Emyr Huws will be back in a Latics shirt? He was very disrespectful to GC and the squad he has assembled last summer, and I would imagine that GC wouldn’t want someone in his squad who considered everyone else beneath him.

in reply to: What a grand weekend #147665

I suppose you are entitled to one good weekend a year. Enjoy it.

in reply to: Billy McKay #147639

Huws definitely told Caldwell that he wasn’t playing in League 1, hence why he went on loan. Not sure about Taylor, but I suspect he was another with an “I’m too good” attitude.

Mckay wasn’t really given a chance last season. It would have been interesting to see if he banged them in for fun at this level – I cant imagine the level he’s playing at in Scotland is any better.
