McClean is fit, can run and can control the ball, though he is totally left-footed.
With a recognised centre forward, he could be a conventional left winger putting in crosses, just as he did against Wigan last season.
With a more mobile forward – and a more supportive midfield – he could build up moves on the left or right leading to scoring opportunities.
In the absence of any strikers and midfield support, he and Powell can chase long balls in the vain hope that this will lead to goals. It generally doesn’t. but it does create the illusion of industry.
He has to learn to stop keep running onto his right foot for a start off.
Was I the only one that looked at that selection tonight and wondered wtf Coyle was thinking? How can a manager keep making so many changes in a team, and changes that don’t seem to make any sense.
If Coyle thinks he needs to make changes then at least let the players play in positions that they and their team mates know they play in.
Tonight Coyle opted for a 4-5-1? maybe with a right winger on the left (mcmannaman) and an attacking midfielder on the right wing (Gomez).
He deployed Perch at left back (right footed) and put 2 left sided players on the bench.
This made no sense before kick off and looked worse up to half time.I don’t blame the players one bit as they are trying to play the way Coyle is asking them.
It is Coyle that is to blame for these poor performances.
We have one of the best teams in this league (on paper) that are playing to Coyle’s instructions which are not working
I don’t buy into this bollox about the team being knackered and requiring rotation as Coyle has the players he’s resting on the bench.
Lets have a bit more consistency in team selection or our season is gonna be over before christmas.
We are FA cup champions for F*&ks sake. Lets start playing like it.
Rant over.
You were doing so well :pinch:
Our team selections are at best, baffling.
It’s Redknapp’s way of telling the owner he hasn’t squandered enough of his money yet and wants even more. Without doubt the most overrated manager in the country.Having read the preview of the OP, I was just about to post the exact same thing.
America got their win :)
Totally agree TL.
I personally would have held a 6 nations style competition with an Emerging nations tournament alongside. The Americans could manage to get out their group and then be flogged by Australia. They won’t learn anything from that and are more likely to walk away from the sport than be encouraged to carry on. Baby steps as they say.
I’m staying positive though at the minute after 6 entertaining games but I do agree it could be too early for some.
The Irish could pick a team of all Irish players if they so wished. They would pick players from the Irish league.
My post was a response to that from Bickymon that none of the Ireland RL team play in the Irish league. Nor do any of the Irish football team.
To try and grow the sport in these countries they need to give them a pinnacle to strive for and hopefully the World Cup can be that if they manage it correctly.
Obviously 99.9% of the posters on here will hope it falls on its face and will find faults with every single aspect no matter how tedious, but from a RL point of view the opening round has been good with 2 stadium records and hopefully with 2 confirmed sell outs to come and some strong sales elsewhere that will carry on. I’m not the biggest fan of Americans but hopefully they get a win tonight.
Excellent news.
Can he play left back or striker?
Australia Day Challenge 2008

A pic of Russell Crowe the Souths owner.
12500 for a friendly is superb if you ask me. Don’t forget the point that you all make day in and day out that nobody outside the M62 cares. There are over 800 registered players over there which for a country giving you the option of playing American Football, Basketball, Baseball and Ice Hockey is again superb.
Yes the numbers are small in comparison to other sports but they are growing and we can’t ask for any more than that. The more strides we can make in America the better.
Back to the World Cup and Scotland got a good win last night coached by a Latics mon.
My apologies. It is 2 games per week plus the State of Origin.

South Sydney have played 2 pre season matches in the US. Give me a few hours and I will try to find links.
Let’s hope eggmon ehI imagine our hopes differ ;)
As much as I enjoy seeing numerous Wigan born players play for Wigan and other clubs, it is slightly easier to make the top level in RL than football Mutty
So we can expect in another 130 years of RL growth it should be up to proper World cup standard :S :S :SWell there’s teams from 3 continents in this one and hopefully a 4th in 2017 so who knows.
No doubt this will be a strong World Cup which they’ll fail to build on just like in 1995.
Regarding the American league.
It may not yet be a strong league but it’s a start. They show practically every NRL game over in the US and a few teams have had pre season matches there in the last few years that have been pretty well attended.
As I say…it’s a start and their squad are mainly all based in that league. Hopefully the can pick some strong WC results up like their friendly win over France.
Would that be similar to the current Republic of Ireland football squad in which NONE play in the Irish Premier and 5 of them weren’t born in Ireland? (7 if you count the 2 in Northern Ireland who would have needed Republic ancestry of some sort)
Then there’s Ray Houghton, Jason McAteer, Andy Townsend and Tony Cascarino who are all ROI legends yet were born elsewhere.
England of course have had Terry Butcher and John Barnes as well no doubt as countless others.
Shaun Maloney has 32 caps for Scotland at all levels but was born in and spent his first 5 years in Malaysia.
Not sure of your point other than that that Jack Wilshere was championing a few weeks ago.
FTR – Pat Richards has Irish parents, an Irish sister and countless Aunties/Uncles cousins etc etc that hail from the Emerald Isle.
Wanted to see Nicholls given his chance. Massive fan of this lad.
The Irish Champions are The Treaty City Titans
The American Champions are Philadelphia FightIrish players:
Scott Grix – Huddersfield
Damian Blanch – Catalans
Pat Richards – Wigan
Eamon O’Carroll – Widnes
Tyrone McCarthy – Warrington
Liam Finn – Featherstone
Stuart Littler – Leigh
Brett White – Canberra Raiders
Bob Beswick – Leigh
James Mendieka – WarringtonThat enough? I actually went to watch the Ireland side yesterday ;)
Don’t know many American players but they all play in the American league AFAIK. They recently defeated Canada in the annunal three match series that they play.

http://www.rli.ieIncidentally, three more nations were added to the Rugby League International Federation list this week:
Jamaica, Russia and Ukraine have been accepted as full members of the Rugby League International Federation.
The RLIF held its AGM in Cardiff on the eve of the World Cup opening ceremony and double-header.
A further trio – Canada, Latvia and Malta – have become affiliates of the European Federation.
RLIF Chairman Scott Carter said: “This is another really exciting development for international rugby league as we head into a World Cup that is looking like being the most successful ever.
“All the nations bring something rich and varied to the table and I must complement the job being done by the European Federation which has worked tirelessly to develop and progress all these countries.”
Russia lost its full member status in 2010 following a series of breaches by the now defunct Russian Rugby League Federation – the new body is called the Russian Association of Rugby League Clubs
The top 25 nations in the World can be found on the Maltese website:

South Africa have bid to host the 2017 World Cup.
