Truth be known, we’ve been especially shite since we lost Matt Smith to injury and then soon after Asgaard went as well. Lost two of our best players there. Darcy is league 2 at best. Dale isn’t amazing either.
I also think Jonny Smith is probably our best player now. But never seems to finish a game if he starts. It’s a big comparison I know, but he’s the nearest thing we’ve got to an Andy Liddell. Can score or get something from nothing.
I agree with all that.
I suppose of anything it does bring to the forefront that we will be able to see if a new man’s likely to be backed (by who comes in) as opposed to Maloney having to scrap the barrel.
I’m also not so sure how suchlikes as Lowe, Evatt, Warne would be keen to work alongside Rioch with him as a director of football. Again, there would be more chance of that with Richardson or a novice coming in.
I’d personally like a fresh man to come in, be left alone to do his job and be backed by the board. The amount of players we will have leaving in the summer, if they do appoint a man they promise to back, itw going to cost them a hell of a lot more than this season.
Yet if we had only just spent about 2 million on 3 or 4 half decent signings to give us a strong spine, we could’ve pissed this league as the majority of teams are very ordinary. But next season we’re going have to have a new team put together again and it can’t be for buttons like this season. Hopefully we’ve learned our lesson IF we manage to stay up. If we do the same again, we’ll end up struggling again.
We will have an idea by who they appoint whether they’re going to back him or not. Lowe, Evatt (I know) then yes, they’re obviously offering backing. But if it’s Richardson or some novice, I feel it’s because they’ve offered to come with no specific budget on the table.Nobody worth their salt will take this job on without knowing they’ll be backed in the summer. Only watching last night and it was obvious how limited we are.
The only players who I think are good enough, are:
Tickle…and he will go.
Kerr
Aimson
Carragher
Taylor…worth signing.
J Smith
M Smith…we’ve missed him.The others are either not good enough or I’m not sure if they are…McHugh for example. Cal Mac is finished.
It’s a far bigger rebuild job than this season was, mainly because we went so heavy on loans and freebies this season. Shot ourselves in the foot really. Saving pennies is going to cost us more.
Nobody wanted him to not be successful, but he didn’t learn from his own mistakes. Over 2 years in the job and still making the same errors.
Wish him all the best in the future.
Who do I want to replace him? I think Ryan Lowe will do a good job. At the end of the day though, it’s who interviews best for it. If by any chance that ends up being Evatt…which would be a highly controversial appointment, I’ll be honest, I’ll back him. It would be a big shock though but maybe having a bit of a ‘shithouse’ type in charge wouldn’t be so bad. We’ve just had a quiet ‘Cliff Richard’ type in charge. I like a manager who kicks buckets. I’m surprised Mick McCarthy hasn’t been linked.
Don’t want any novices, this job isn’t for learners. No way. Needs someone who has already been managing.
Listening to radio Lancashire on the way home yesterday.
Two ex Rovers players were (one of which was Kevin Gallagher) criticising the way that Jon Dahl Tomasson had them playing.
Sounded like a carbon copy of the Latics, i.e.
Goalie rolls the ball out from the back, players pass it square and backwards in and around the 18 yd area. In general, sitting back far too deep; thus giving the opposition opportunity to press high and take advantage of poor passing and mistakes from the Rovers defence. Corners being taken short, resulting in the ball not even getting into the opposition’s goal area.
Then they discussed the changes that David Lowe (who was in charge of Rovers for one game) made yesterday which resulted in a good performance. Defence was pushed up, still played a lot of possession, but around the halfway line and into the attacking half of the pitch. Goalie only rolled out the ball on rare occasions and there was no farting about in their own area. All corners were taken like corners are supposed to be. In summary, the two reporters, said the simple changes made a big difference and the fans went home happy. Not difficult is it

I honestly didn’t know Dahl Tomason had left Rovers. Just shows, Id have been straight onto that…but losing interest in football in general. But sounds like David Lowe has a fair idea.
Loads of managers and teams leaning towards Pep’s way of doing thing. But City have 100 million players doing it, we have a young lad, Hughes, and a cheap on loan journeyman, Good trying to play it, along with another journeyman, Clare, and a young loaned, Chambers. Its like trying to recreate the mona-lisa with Crayons. It just ain’t going to happen.
For me, its simple. Get the ball to the halfway line or into their half and THEN start trying to play fancier stuff. One problem is Magennis as the front man. Wins nothing, so holds nothing up, so inadvertently the ball is with the opposition and they’re coming back at us again, and then we are too deep. We are pinned on the backfoot by teams, even as the home side. That’s chronically wrong.
We’ve no steel, no leader on the pitch. We’ve no Sean Gregan, We’ve no Charlie Adam, he’ll, we’ve no Neill Rimmer in the centre of the park. Adeeko and S Smith are players who should be bit-part fringe players. Matt Smith is class…can spot a pass, but A, we hardly give him any options, and B, he needs someone solid alongside him to allow him that freedom.
Whatever is going on with Humphreys, needs sorting. If he wants away, Maloney should tell him to play well and get noticed by other clubs. I heard there were words between him and Jonny Smith yesterday. That’s the thing, they’re playing like strangers, like individuals who don’t know each other. If I were Maloney Id have them all off to an army barracks for some ‘team building’ exercises. Id also be suggesting something like a night out for a squad meal if we beat Bolton. Things like that..because there doesn’t seem to be a sense of comradeship at all. Like him or loathe him, I’m from the Neil Warnock old-skool of doing things. Spirit, togetherness. We certainly had that under Paul Jewell.I dont know why managers don’t play 4-4-2. You have to do the basic things right before you can even look at the fancier things. Someone said that apparently 442 isn’t flexible enough for the modern game. Balls. Solid back 4, solid midfield, a mix of a big man and a fast goalpoacher up front. It’s really not complicated at all.
We’ve farmed Wyke out to get rid of his wages, or a chunk of them. But doing that and in the process putting reliance on Magennis, honestly, that’s a ridiculous move. Leaving us short up front could cost us goals and ultimately, points. We aren’t safe yet, not at all. Kelman looks fast and could be good, but its a gamble. I’d have sooner have kept Wyke and shipped out Magennis…but who would want him? Nobody. This balancing the books and trying to stay up…dangerous game to play. But game we have to play, Ns lessons Maloney SHOULD have learned weeks ago. Stop this playing out from the back nonsense. Can we get back to the old goal kicks? Try and get the ball to the half way line, win it and try and get forward. Get the ball hit towards the corner flag for suchlikes and J Smith, J Jones, or Cal Mac to get after. Or even Kalman to chase, hold up and build something. This ‘brand’ of football Maloney plays…its as bad as I’ve seen as a Latics supporter. It’s got to change…and right away. But he’s a stubborn fool I think and it will only end one way. Seen it plenty of times.
What did the ‘ Scousers ‘ ever do for us ..Newell Jewell Rogers .Corrigan, Gore King. Kelly, Daley, Fairclough , Beesley, Baines , Hinnegan , anymore ???

Billy Stewart, Ray Mathias as manager, Paul Cook as both player and manager, McManaman, Lang, Alex Cribley…30 years service at the club, Tony McCloughlin still holds the record of goals in a match for latics…6 goals I think it was, in early 70s. (He was related to my mates dad)
Complete horseshit of a post
Go on then, explain why?
He’s clueless.
You know what the future of this club needs?
1. A manager recruited from outside of any club links. We always go for a manager with club links…its bizarre. No other club is so ‘inward’.
2. A manager who is not some radical appontment, like Kolo The Clown was.
3. An experienced manager who isn’t brainwashed by the ‘Pep Style’.Worked well with Coyle, Mackay and as for Yootha Joyce….
This century our better managers have been ex players for us ie Jewell, Martinez, Caldwell (he did win L1), Cook, Richardson being the exception
Jewell, I will give you, did a fantastic job. He was well supported by his chairman.
Martinez won the cup, but a lot of the rest of it, apart from a few moments, was dire. Any other club would have sacked him.
Same with Cook. Any other club would have sacked him months before he walked. Some awful football…a few good momenta, a god awful run of away games without a win.
Caldwell was a fraud. Won a god awful League One and then was shown to be poor. Richardson did a steady eddie job of it in difficult circumstances, but the football was very poor at times. As for the outside appointments, Coyle was announced as manager by Whelan before he had even agreed to take the job…it was bizarre. And I’ve had that from Coyle himself.
Mackay was a cheap appointment, available for free. Joyce was, I’ll be honest, a big disappointment. I thought he would be gold, but we seemed to be bringing players in left, right and centre and you then had a mish-mash of different managers players. Truthfully, we wasted a lot of money. But we had players who have proved themselves since, such as Andy Delort. It just never happened for them at Wigan.Rosler, was initially a success but from accounts I’ve heard, he clashed personality wise with a few players.
This summer is going to be really telling about where we are heading as a club. A few out of contract who we can’t afford to renew…and I’m not sure we would want to. I personally, can’t wait for the season to end and so we can have a clear out. Then assess what funds we will then have available, and to see if Danson puts funds available. It concerns me that our scouting is non existent at the moment. I think we could unearth some gems from the non league…I watched Maidstone beat Ipswich yesterday and thought they had several capable looking players. But until we get scouts going around looking…its not going to happen.
I think we overcomplicate our play. It’s too slow and laboured and we need to work the ball forward quicker. Why managers don’t try a ‘solid’ 442, is beyond me.
I agree with all of that.
I don’t know why managers try and stick to a set style of play. Surely you need to be able to adapt to different opposition? You do what you need to do to win each game. Might not always be pretty, but you can’t always play like Brazil 70. Sometimes you might have to play like Wimbledon 88 or Stoke City 2010. In the future nobody will remember what style you had. But they’ll remember where you finished in the league table.
Maloney is over analysing the opposition, rather than concentrating on his own players and their strengths and weaknesses. There are players in the team who simply are not good enough. Who’s fault is that? The manager. It’s criminal we are so weak up front.
I can see us being dragged into the relegation battle with Burton, Cambridge and others likely to pick some points up. Is Maloney really playing for draws? Is that how bad we’ve got?
I think these next 3 games can make or break us.
I think if we get 4 points from them, we’ve not done too bad. But if we were to lose all 3, we could be in serious trouble, depending on others results as well.
I watched Luton and Asgaard again last night and he had a bit of a shocker.
Luton fans were talking about him being poor as well, after the game. He’s being played as a flat central midfielder and it doesn’t suit him at all. Certainly not at Luton.
And they’re advertising next Tuesday night tickets…
“Adults from £26…”
Are the club deluded? That’s a lot of money for a Tuesday night game. An average game really, no disrespect to Huddersfield.
How many are going to fork out that money for a ticket? I already think it’ll be a low turnout. They’ll still include the ST who won’t be there (3 from us alone). There are quite a few ST holders staying away at the moment.
But charging £26 for someone to just decide to go to the match…its not going to attract many.Maybe it’ll be when the ST sales are drastically down in the summer they’ll realise how many people have dropped off.
Lose these next 2 or 3 games and we are in trouble. Win 2 and draw 1 of them, I think it’ll near enough see us clear.
But to win games, you have to score goals. And can’t see where they’ll come from.
If I were a manager, I’d want to keep to a fairly rigid ‘settled first 11’, barring injuries or suspensions. My changes would be minimal and done out of necessity rather than choice. Maloney just makes changes for changes sake it seems.
For me, and golden rule would be not to change a settled back 4 unless it was forced upon you. When he’s pulling a centre back off the field and moving full backs about, it’s disruption you don’t need. Some of his selections and choices absolutely has me baffled. And you can say “he’s been in football years, he knows more than you.” Really? I’m not convinced. There is not a cat in hells chance I wouldn’t have brought an experienced striker in either at the start of the season, or the January window. Everyone could see it. We were crying out. But stubborn bollocks knew best….
At any other club, he would’ve been sacked well before Christmas, probably around October time. But we aren’t a normal club. We’re a charade of a club. Just ticking along for as long as they can have us ticking along. But make no mistake, tbe attendances are falling drastically. I saw a photo of the east stand from the away end earlier and I was shocked how empty it was. I didn’t realise. It’ll be even worse at the Huddersfield game. They might announce 8000 on or something like that, but that’s including the season tickets…and there’s 3 here, plus myself who won’t be going. There’s a lot more besides.
Wait til they have the cheek to start putting renewal dates and deadlines out, they’re in for a shock because I can see ST take up being the lowest it’s been in years. The 6k they said we had last season I can see it being more like 4k. You can’t blame people one bit.People, and especially Wiganers, will only turn out of there’s something worth turning out for. In the days of Swain, we were shite. But we still scored some goals and still created some entertainment. It was better than this what we have now. A lot better. Our owners then, Gage and Bitel, didn’t have a pot to piss in, but they didn’t lie to us either. They steadied the ship and kept us going until Whelan came on board.
Being told that the aim is to get back up to the Championship and then ultimately the Premier League, and then being ran how we are, and seeing us actually going in the other direction is insulting. We aren’t stupid. We are miles away from getting anywhere near the Championship. And yet when you look at the overall quality of this League One, apart from Birningham and Wrexham, the money clubs, there’s nothing in the rest of the league. Our biggest obstacles is actually ourselves. Is there actual genuine ambition in the club? I can’t see it myself. Genuine ambition would, or will see a change of manager and that manager backed properly in the summer to get us making progress and going as a club.
But I won’t hold my breath. I don’t know when I will go a game again at the moment. Unless things change, it could be a while.
Next home game on a Tuesday night V Huddersfield, can see it being a very poor crowd. Can’t blame anybody for giving it a swerve.
How long will they let it drag on for before we get the corner flag photo and ‘Club Statement’?.
That said, they’ll probably do it and when you click on it’ll tell is that “listen, this f***** is going nowhere so like it or lump it.”I’ve just looked up at a huge list of out of work managers. A lot were foreign and likely out of our reach. Ones I did see and thought they might be within our reach…
Ryan Lowe
Paul Warne
Neil Harris
Duncan FergusonBut…and this is the thing. If we are going to ever make that change, there’s going to have to be some more backing of the new man from our owner and board. This running the club on buttons has got us in the state we are. By all means, yes, we need to be careful and sensible, but then again to make any progress as a club, I think we do need some financial investment for stronger signings. It’s imperative we get the scouting section set up at the club, to get out there and maybe find some gems in places like the Vanarama League and the League Of Ireland. Grimsby, for example, signed Cameron McJannett, captain of Derry City last summer. Bolton signed Eoin Toal as well, after we were linked with him.
So much at the club needs to be picked up and improved.Enough is enough.
I’ve swerved most of this season but now done the last 3 home games. People near me asking me when I’ll go again…and I honestly don’t know.
I don’t like our manager.
I don’t like our players. With any manager, or any club WORTH THEIR SALT, Smith and Adeeko wouldn’t get near a starting place in midfield. Both are not good enough. And Sibbick? Jesus tonight. Awful. Shocking player.
Then there’s the lack of a goalscorer. We all saw it ages ago, we all knew it. This manager, he’s worse than Warren Joyce and Kolo The Clown. He’s had extra leeway because of his history with us. Enough is enough.I don’t know when I will bother going again. You’d think Bolton maybe? But if we are playing like that…nah I’ll give it a miss.
Maloney HAS to go. Clubs bloody dying with this shite.
