8 April 2016 at 4:22 pm #147938I really don’t give a monkey’s what Martinez has said in the press or whether it is right or wrong.
He’s talking about Everton, not Wigan Athletic, so it doesn’t interest me.
He hasn’t been our manager for three years, and we’ve (well some of us have) moved on.
I’m grateful for the FA Cup. And I’m grateful for the wins against Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Everton, Chelsea, Stoke on the last day of season, the battering of Newcastle at the DW, the win at Blackburn, and the amazing run of games to trigger The Great Escape. I’m I’m also grateful that he was a mentor to Caldwell, and has had an indirect influence on how the team currently play.
But without this thread, I wouldn’t dicuss the virtues of Martinez at all.
And no, I’m not going to post on this thread any longer…

8 April 2016 at 8:26 pm #147945Mentor to Caldwell my arse. He was Gary’s boss who Gary played for. He didn’t train or understudy under Bob at all. He played for him just like Coyle Rosier and Malky we’re his boss too.

I too am grateful for all those you mentioned. But what he did do was relegate us (fine given our budget, resources etc) then p155ed off. THAT is unforgivable. & how anyone can still hold him with high regard & want him to do well is beyond belief.

Bleedin ell Runcorn how can you say that about a guy that brought us our one & only historic win to date… THE FA Cup?
I agree that I’m not bothered what he achieves after leaving us, but we were always teetering on the edge of relegation so not entirely Bobs fault. Glad he went as his footy was totally boring, and that, the Everton fans are finding now! He’ll be gone sooner rather than later!11 April 2016 at 2:12 am #148007Everything we have won has been important and historic and all meant loads to us. The FA Cup was the ultimate but the jewelers double promotion and league cup final along with survival twice and doing it playing football the Wigan way probably was our greatest ever period for feel good I can remember. Agree Bobs football was so boring. No not boring it was bloody horrible. Well apart from about fifteen occasions when he changed his principals.
11 April 2016 at 2:21 am #148008Couldn’t agree more Donny, Mr Jewell was the best ever manager imo.
But I did like Ray Mathias..Bob seemed to change his tac tics at 28 games when he knew we were in the s***.. The last ten games were always good to watch under Bobs tenure.

Had he have played that way during those 10 games throughout his 3 years, it would have been a pleasure rather than a chore. I am also not disputing that magical, historical day he brought us in may ’13.
But, lets say for arguments sake our 1st season back in the championship was under bobs tenure. He decided to stay for 1 more season out of a loyalty thing to try & get us back up, but failed against QPR in the play-offs. Fine at least he tried to get us up but sadly failed. He would have gone with my blessing. Had he have kept us up in the premier league & turned round saying “Ive taken this club as far as i can, time for a new challenge.” That is also fine in my book.
But, i cant understand how some on here still hold him with high regard after relegating us. & its not an anti martinez rant. I would be saying the same thing had bruce or god forbid jewell relegated us then left at the 1st chance.

A bit like Pascal Chimbonda who relegated himself from Hero to Zero with one swift move.

I hold him in high regard because of the reasons I stated earlier, plus I liked him as a player. My preferences.I’d have liked him to do well elsewhere because I like all our ex-players / ex-managers etc to do well if they’ve gone to a bigger club as it reflects well on Wigan.
However, if he doesn’t do well and gets sacked. Never mind. I won’t lose sleep over it. I certainly don’t read articles about him and Everton or watch interviews with him.
And he was never going to stay another season as the Everton job had been his since around February or March. Us being relegated wasn’t part of the plan, and had he stayed another season the Everton job would have gone.
And that’s the bit I don’t get.
Were people honestly expecting him to stay out of loyalty, when there was a chance to double his salary and move to a bigger club?
11 April 2016 at 6:12 pm #148023If as you say standish he was promised the EFC job around feb/march, that would have been around the same time as our already expected decline from the premier league, but also had just won our place in the FA cup quarter finals. Now im never ever going to dispute our magical day in may. But it would appear he put all his egs in the one basket where the FA cup was concerned to make himself look good for the EFC job & to give deluded scousers false hope of his champions league promise within 3 years.
Like yourself i want our past players, managers etc to do well when they move on. But only when they leave on good terms which doesn’t put the club/team in any manure.
Anyhow standish. I thought you were not posting on here again. You keep coming back, so you must love this thread! ;)
